2 Preface This release note covers software release version for the 2201R Mobile Tester. Intended audience This document is intended to be read by all users of the 2201R, as well as applications engineers and developers. Purpose This document is intended to facilitate the installation of the 2201R software release and to describe functionalities/features in the current release. 4 1.1 Overview 1 Introduction This release note covers the software release for the 2201R Mobile Tester. This is a major release that covers the following modes: GSM Option VGCS Option GPRS Option EDGE Option Autotest Option Installation instructions are in Section Scope This document describes available functionality and known limitations. Note that this release includes the following components: 1.7.1_0.tar.gz Software Purpose The latest firmware will be available on the internet at or on the FTP site. SCPI command. For example, the *IDN? 5 2 Release information 2.1 Added functionality for this release The following functionality is new in this release: 1. Support for Audio Loopback while MO VGCS Call is active (SCPI only). 2. Support for tone play during GSM call (SCPI only). 2.2 Issues resolved in this release The following issue has been resolved in this release: 1. If calling party address is greater than 8 digits, SubAddress is not working in CALL:GSM:BSOR SCPI. 5

6 3 Supported baseline functionality This release supports the following: 3.1 Supported functionality for this release VGCS support VGCS allows more than two users to participate in the same call. Group calls are one of the advanced speech call services available in GSM-R networks. Prioritization of group calls defines, among other things, whether a given group call is permitted to interrupt a group call with a lower priority. VGCS allows more than two users to participate in the same call. Basic group call functionality involves support of the following scenarios: Call from a base station Call from a mobile station Push to talk (PTT) support Switches a subscriber from Listener to Talker mode (or vice-versa) in a group call Autotest support Autotest is a mode used in the 2201R to test mobile phones to obtain an overall assessment (Pass or Fail). Support for creation and execution of GSM-R scenarios has been provided REC (Railway Emergency Call) Support REC is a high priority group call (VGCS). It has the priority 0. Both MS and BS REC calls are supported Support for measurement during call 2201R supports a series of RF measurements during the call active state. The measurements can be fetched and compared to be within a standard predefined limit using manual testing and the Autotest feature. Below is the list of supported measurements: Output power Power vs. time RMS and peak phase error Frequency error BER Reported RSSI Burst length 6

7 3.2 This release supports the following options GSM Option The 2231 GSM Option performs the necessary GSM call processing and measurements on a voice channel or a test channel (loopback channel). Measurements include: Output power Power vs. time RMS and peak phase error Frequency error BER Burst length VGCS Option The VGCS Option is an extension of the GSM Option. In VGCS mode (GSM-R), a 2201R can transmit and receive prioritized group calls (Voice Group Call Service). Group calls are one of the advanced speech call services available in GSM-R networks GPRS Option The GPRS Option is again an extension of the GSM Option, adding the necessary protocol for the GPRS Attach and to set up a test channel. The measurements are the same as with the GSM Option, but also supporting BLER measurements. Protocol and measurements support data traffic on one timeslot in either the uplink or the downlink EDGE Option The EDGE Option enables 8PSK transmitter measurements to ensure that the EDGE transmitter functions correctly. For the purpose of the measurements, a data connection is established. The GSM Option is a prerequisite of the EDGE Option. 7

8 4 Customer download portal Firmware updates are available on the internet at The 2201R allows you to install a new firmware version from a USB flash drive or an FTP server, change between several versions stored on the hard disk, or delete a stored version. 8

9 5 Installing new firmware 5.1 Firmware updates via USB flash drive In order to replace the firmware version by another (typically newer) one, proceed as follows for an update via USB flash drive: 1 Download the firmware from the Cobham website. 2 Copy the firmware into the root directory of a USB flash drive. 3 Connect the USB flash drive to a USB port on the 2201R. 4 From the start menu, select Config. > Service. The Service menu appears. 5 In the Source selection field, select USB. 6 Select SW Update. The 2201R displays a pop-up box with firmware files found in the root folder of the USB flash drive. 7 Select the file of the firmware version you want to install, and click Install. The file is copied from the USB flash drive to the 2201R s internal hard disk, and the installation is started. At the end of the update, the soft key description changes to Reboot. 8 Select Reboot. The instrument is rebooted and the new firmware is ready to be used. 9

10 5.2 Firmware updates via FTP server Instead of copying files from a USB flash drive, you can use an internal FTP server to update the firmware of your 2201R: 1 Ensure that the 2201R is connected via LAN to a computer running FTP server software. A username and password must be set up, and a folder must be defined as the root directory of that FTP server for the user. 2 Select Config. > Service. The Service menu appears. 3 In the Source selection field, select FTP. 4 Select SW Update. The 2201R displays a pop-up box with firmware files (*.tar.gz) found in the virtual root directory and any subdirectory of the FTP server. 5 Select the file of the firmware version you want to install, and click Install. The file is copied from the FTP server to the 2201R s internal hard disk, and the installation is started. At the end of the update, the soft key description changes to Reboot. 6 Select Reboot. The instrument is rebooted and the new firmware is ready to be used. 5.3 Loading a different firmware version The following steps can be taken to run a different firmware version that is already stored on the 2201R s hard disk 1 From the start menu, click Config. > Service. The Service menu appears. In the Stored Firmware Versions section, the selection field indicates all the available firmware versions except for the version currently running, which is displayed at the top of the menu. 2 Select the firmware version that you want to run from the Change to/delete selection field within the Stored Firmware Versions section. 3 Click the Change to Version soft key. The selected version is prepared for loading. When finished, the Reboot soft key appears. 4 Click Reboot. The instrument is restarted with the alternative instrument firmware. 5.4 Deleting unused firmware If you do not want to keep an old, unused firmware version on the 2201R s hard disk any more: 1 From the start menu, click Config. > Service. The Service menu appears. The firmware version currently running is displayed at the top of the menu. 2 In the Change to/delete selection field within the Stored Firmware Versions section, select the firmware version that you want to delete. 3 Click the Delete Version soft key. The selected version is removed from the hard disk. Note: you cannot delete a version that is currently running. Change to another version first, and then delete the version that was running previously. 10

11 6 Limitations and known issues ER-GSM band is supported but not tested with commercial test subjects. Intermittent MT SMS failure observed with few Cab Radios. 11

12 7 Software licensing support The software licensing options supported along with 2201R are : 2231 GSM Option AG GPRS Option AG EDGE Option AG Autotest Option AG GSM-R Option 48000/ Steps for installing the license key using the 2201R s GUI If you purchase a new software option as an upgrade, you receive an option key. This key is a sequence of alphanumeric characters that allows you to install the option quickly on your workbench, without the need to ship it to a Cobham service center. Ensure that the 2201R is running the latest firmware. The version number of the firmware installed can be checked on the start menu. The latest firmware is available from the website at To permanently install a new software option, click the Option Key; or click the Temporary Key to install a temporary key, for example, for evaluation purposes. A pop-up box prompts you to enter the code: Enter the code in the Option Key input field and click Return. The 2201R checks if the option key is valid for this instrument (depending on its serial number), and enables the functionality for immediate use. You can check which options are installed by clicking Config. > Options from the start menu. The Options menu appears: 12
