1 London MLE Fronter Waltham Forest How to customise your today page It is easy to customise your today page so that it shows exactly what you want to see when you login. The instructions below will help you to produce a particular layout and content for your today page feel free to adapt this to your requirements. 1. Click on the Today icon in the personal toolbar 2. Scroll to the bottom of the page. On the right, select Customise today. 3. You will be shown a series of layouts for your today page. Select the second layout from the left. 4. Tools are the items that will populate the today page. To start from scratch, select all of the existing tools by placing a tick in each of the boxes and click on remove. 1
2 5. You can now populate each area with the tools that you require. In area 1 select New Tool. You will then be shown a list of possible tools that can be added to your today page. 6. From the list select News and Stickies (tick the boxes). News will show the daily staff bulletin and student bulletin and Stickies will show any internal messages that have been sent to you. Now click on Save (bottom right of the page). 7. Repeat this process for area 2, but this time select Calendar and RSS feed. The calendar will show items from the school calendar and any personal items that you have added. The RSS feed can be used to give you live news from another website e.g. BBC News (more about how this is used later). 8. If you select the Today page icon in the personal toolbar you will be able to view your new look today page. 2
3 How to add an RSS feed to your today page You can add any RSS feed to your today page. This will appear as a list of live news items that can be viewed. Below you will find instructions on how to add a RSS feed from BBC news. You must have added the RSS tool to your today page (see: How to customise my today page) for these instructions to work. 1. From your web browser (internet explorer) navigate to the BBC News homepage ( 2. Click on the News Feeds icon (top right). 3. Copy the information from the address bar. It will look something like this: 4. Login to Fronter (MLE Login) 5. From the personal toolbar click on the Today icon. 6. Click on Edit RSS feed icon (bottom right). 7. Click on Add RSS feed and then click in the long box on the left of the screen. 8. Paste the contents from the address bar that you had saved to the clipboard into this box. 3
4 9. Select Save and then click on the Today icon in the personal toolbar 10. You will now see the RSS feed as part of your today layout Select any of the news stories to get more detailed news. How to use your online My Documents folder This can be used to save files, especially if you want to use the files at home and at school. You currently have a 10 MB limit. 1. Click on the My Documents icon in the personal tool bar. 2. To add a file click on Upload file 3. Click on Browse and find the file you want to upload and the open the file. 4
5 4. Now click on Save and your file will be saved. 5. To delete a file that you no longer want, place a tick in the box and select Delete. 6. You can upload more than one file at a time. To do this select Multiple Files and repeat the procedure outlined above. Remember you have limited space in your online My Documents folder. How pupils hand in their work and how teachers can mark it Data from SIMS is transferred into the MLE. A classroom is created for every class. Each classroom contains members. The members of the room include the teacher and all of the pupils in that class. Pupils can submit their work online for marking. 1. From the room selector, choose Display all rooms. 2. Select one of your teaching rooms and display it. 3. If you click on Members you will see a list of all of the pupils in the class and the name of the teacher. 5
6 4. Now click on the Hand in icon 5. Click on the Folder icon (Top Right) and enter a title for your folder e.g. Homework1. 6. Save the folder and you will see that all the pupils names have appeared in that folder and by each pupil s name it says undelivered. 7. Pupils can now upload their homework into this folder. 8. You can open the homework by clicking on it. It will open in a separate window. 9. Once you have assessed the homework, select Fronter again (see below) 10. To comment on the homework and grade it click on the down arrow by the file name and choose Comment. 6
7 11. You can now add a comment, a grade and decide whether the work is complete you can then approve it and then save it. Note that once the comment is saved the green question mark will change into a green tick. 12. You can select in progress or not approved for pupils who have not completed the work to a satisfactory standard. The comment and grade will be saved into the pupil s portfolio. How to use your To Do list Within the calendar tool there is a To Do tool that can be used to organise tasks, especially if they have a deadline. 1. Click on the My Calendar icon from the personal toolbar. 2. Now click on To Do. 7
8 3. Click on Create new (top right) 4. Select New Task and then enter details about the task that you must complete. You can also add a deadline to work to. 5. You can record your progress as you complete the task. 8
9 How to add resources to Online Staff Resources and Online Student Resources The instructions below works with both the staff resource folder and the student resource folder. Remember students cannot view the staff resources. Most file formats can be added to these resource folders. 1. Select the room Online Staff Resources 2. Select Faculty Folders 3. Select your faculty. 4. To add a file click on Upload file 3. Click on Browse and find the file you want to upload and the open the file. 9
10 4. Now click on Save and your file will be saved. 5. To delete a file that you no longer want, place a tick in the box and select Delete. 6. You can upload more than one file at a time. To do this select Multiple Files and repeat the procedure outlined above. How to close rooms that you no longer need If you are no longer using a room, you are able to close it. 1. From the room selector, choose Display all rooms. 2. Put a tick in any room that you wish to close. 3. Scroll to the bottom of the window and select Close rooms. 4. To reverse this process, tick Show closed rooms at the top of the window; select the rooms that you want to open and then choose Open rooms from the bottom of the window. 10
11 How to send a sticky with a link to an internal document or an external website. 1. Click on Internal Message from the personal toolbar 2. Click on New Sticky. 3. Add your recipient and then click on Add internal link. 4. Select More on find the file that you wish to link to the sticky 5. Alternatively if you wish to link the sticky to an external website, click on Add external link and copy and paste the web address into the URL box (you must include How to manage favourite rooms It is a good idea to make the rooms that you use most often Favourites. When you click on the room selector the room will be available without clicking on Display all rooms. 1. From the room selector choose Display all rooms. 2. You will be shown a list of all the rooms that you have access to. Tick the rooms that you would like to add to your favourites. 3. At the bottom of the window select Add to favourite rooms. 4. Now if you view the room selector, all of your favourite rooms will be visible. How to use Fronter Help Fronter help can give you much more detailed information about how to use Fronter than this user guide. 1. Login to Fronter (MLE Login) 2. Click on Help (this is just below the personal toolbar). 11

The Documentation column will provide you with information on how to use Fronter (Select go to documentation for London schools).
