1 How do I get videos (movie files, YouTube, etc) to play in PowerPoint 2010? Answer: There are several options to enable videos, whether from movie files (e.g. from a video camera) or from YouTube, to play in within a PowerPoint 2010 for Windows slide. Introduction: Use the instructions directly below for movie files. Jump to the instructions at the bottom of the page for YouTube files. Step by Step: Movie Files Some movie files will play fine on your computer, but fail when inserted into PowerPoint for Windows. For example, newer files of.mov and.qt may not play and will have to be converted to mpeg-1. The solution is to use the Media Studio's computers and the application Xilisoft Video Converter to convert the movie to a high quality mpeg-1 clip that can be inserted and played into PowerPoint. If you have already created your movie using imovie, you will first need to export (share) it and then convert it using Xilisoft. Step 1: Export Your imovie to Quicktime DV Stream 1. Open your saved imovie project. 2. Then from imovie's Share menu, select Export using Quicktime. 3. A new window will open. Name your movie and choose the folder where you'd like to save it. 2 From the Export dropdown, select Movie to DV Stream. 4. After the movie is finished saving, close imovie by selecting Quit from the imovie Menu. STEP 2: Use Xilisoft Video Converter to convert your movie to a PowerPoint friendly mpeg-1 file: 1. Open Xilisoft by clicking on the Xilisoft icon in the dock at the bottom of the screen. 2. 3 3. Select the.dv file you exported previously, then click Open. Or, if you have your own movie file (such as a QuickTime file), open it here. Page 3 of 11

8 Step 3: Copy and insert your converted clip into PowerPoint for Windows. 1. Create a folder which contains both your PowerPoint presentation and any embedded movies as separate files to keep the required linked relationship between both PowerPoint and multimedia files. Page 8 of 11

9 2. The movie clip is now ready to be inserted into your PowerPoint for Windows presentation. [1] YouTube Videos If your presentation equipment (computer or laptop) has an internet connection, you can embed a YouTube video into your slide. If you don't have an internet connection, jump to the instructions below to download the YouTube video(s) and add them to your presentation. Embedding a YouTube Video 1. In your browser, go to the YouTube page with your video. 2. Under the video window, click on the Share icon (see below). 3. Click on Embed underneath the Share icon. A window with a long URL for the video will appear. Use Ctrl + C on your keyboard to copy the URL. 4. Open PowerPoint 2010 and go to the slide on which you'd like to embed the video. 5. Click on Insert from the top menu, then the arrow under the Video button. 6. Choose Insert Video from Web Site. 7. In the box that appears, use Ctrl + V to Paste the long URL from Step 3 and click on Insert. 8. A black box will appear on your slide; however, when you go into Presentation mode, the movie will appear with a button in the center to begin playing. 10 If you do not have internet connectivity, you can download the videos from YouTube and insert them into your PowerPoint. 1. Go to keepvid.com [2]. 2. Enter the link of the video you want to download into the box at the top of the screen and click the gray Download button to the right of the box (do not use the large, blue, button). 3. You may get a message at the top of your browser, in yellow, about Java - click on the Run this time button. 4. You may get a pop-up window about Java. Update if needed, or click Later to update later. 5. You will get a pop-up window asking you if you want to run the application KeepVidDownloader. Click on Run. 6. In the KeepVid browser window, a list of videos will appear (see below). Click on the first link in the list, to download the MP4 video. 7. Follow steps 1 and 2 above under Step 3 "Copy and insert your converted clip into PowerPoint for Windows" to create a folder for both your video file(s) and PowerPoint, and to insert the video into your PowerPoint.
