1 EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS ADDING RESOURCES IN MOODLE Facilitators: Joseph Blankson (j-blankson), Chandra Dunbar (c-dunbar), Sharyn Zembower (s-zembower) A resource is an item that an instructor can use to support learning (e.g. files, links, multimedia content) ADDING A LABEL A label is text or media elements that appear on the front page of the course (e.g. banner, label of sections) to provide quick instructions on the front page of yours course. To add a label: 3. Select Label 4. Click the Add button 5. To see all the settings click Expand all (upper right corner) 6. To use editing tools click Toolbar Toggle icon 7. Enter text in Label Text area 8. Leave Common Module settings as Show for label to be visible 9. Click Save and return to course 1
2 ADDING A FILE Files can be loaded to the main page of a Moodle course. Once the file is added, an icon will appear representing either the type of file uploaded. To add a file; Quick Method: This drag and drop method does not work with Internet Explorer (IE9 or earlier) 2. Drag and drop the file onto the course section where you d like it to appear 3. If necessary edit title of file Longer Method 3. Select File 5. Enter Name for the File 6. Write a Description 7. To use editing tools click Toolbar Toggle icon 8. Either drag and drop file into box with blue arrow OR Click Add button to choose file using the File picker 9. Under Appearance select the Display options 10. Click the Save and return to course or Save and display button 2
3 ADDING A FOLDER Folders can be used to organize course contents. Folders you wish to upload must be "zipped" or "compressed" first. If you already have a folder of files you would like to display, there are two methods: Quick Method 2. Drag and drop the zipped/compressed folder onto section where you'd like it to appear 3. Select Unzip files and create folder 4. Click on Upload Longer Method 2. Click the Add an activity or resource link 3. Select Folder 5. Enter Name 6. Write a Description 7. Click Add to choose a file using the File picker 8. Select Display folder contents option 9. Click Save and return to course 3
4 ADDING URL The URL resource allows instructors to create a link inside the course to direct students to a website or an external file. To add URL; 1. Click Turn editing on 1. Click Add an activity or resource link 2. Select URL 3. Click Add button 4. Enter a Name 5. Write Description 6. Check box to Display description on course page 7. Enter URL in the external URL field 8. Select a display option: a. Automatic - The best display option for the URL is selected automatically. b. Embed - The URL is displayed within the page below the navigation bar together with the URL description and any blocks. c. Open - Only the URL is displayed in the browser window. d. In pop-up - The URL is displayed in a new browser window without menus or an address bar. If In popup is selected, determine the dimensions of the new window. 9. Leave Common Module settings as Show for the URL to be visible 10. Click Save and return to course 4
5 CREATING A PAGE A page allows instructors to have a full range of HTML possibilities within your instruction. It is a useful resource that allows input of text that is housed off the main page of the course. To create a Page; 1. Click Turn editing on 3. Select Page 5. Provide Name 6. Write Description 7. Check box to Display description on course page 8. Enter Page content using the HTML editor for formatting 9. Check box to Display page name or description (option) 10. Leave Common Module settings as Show for the URL to be visible 11. Click Save and return to course 5
