1 Embossed Embroidery Designs: Sewing Room Towel Janie Lantz In Embroidery, Embossing is a technique that flattens nap or pile in a high loft fabric, or flattens areas in puffy quilts, so part of the embroidery appears recessed or embossed into the surrounding fabric. Create Embossing using the 5D Design Creator module from the 5D Embroidery System. Reset All Modules 1. Open 5D Embroidery. 2. QuickLink to 5D Configure. 3. Click on Reset All Modules. 4. Click OK to the message, All modules will be closed and reset to their default settings. 5. When you see the message, Please confirm that all modules except 5D Configure are now closed, ensure no other modules are open in the background. If they are, click on the module(s) in the background, and close after saving any work that might be in progress. Click OK to the All modules will be closed message when you have verified all other modules are closed. 6. Click OK to the message, All modules are now reset to their default settings. Resetting the Modules will make all menus appear as they first installed, reset all browse windows to their default size and folder, and make the Control panels and toolbars reset to default. No changes will be made in custom settings such as MyThreads, MyMachines, or MyHoops. 7. Click OK to close 5D Configure. Page 1 of 7

2 Create Embossing in 5D Design Creator Software 1. Open the Desktop icon. From the Program Folder, open 5D Embroidery. 2. You will see the message, Please Wait while configuring the software for the current user. The 5D Embroidery System is setting up the file structure for your version of 5D Embroidery Software. Create a Vector Graphic Image 3. Click the 5D Design Creator icon in the QuickLink Toolbar. 4. The ExpressDesign Wizard will open to the Choose Design Type Page. Select Load a Background Picture into the Draw Window. Click Next. 5. Click View Picture. Browse to (My)Documents \5dembroidery \samples \5demb \pics2 \motifs. 6. Click OK. 7. Click Page Down three times. 8. Select the Sewing Machine, 1MMo Click Finish. 10. Click Hoop. In Hoop Type, change Hoop Group to PFAFF creative sensation. Change Hoop Size to the 120mm x 120mm creative 120 square Hoop, Orientation Vertical. 11. Click OK to Hoop Selection. 12. In the Draw Window click Polygon Draw in the Create tools. 13. Zoom In with the integrated Zoom toolbar to between 40% and 60%, or until you can see the entire background image. Page 2 of 7

3 14. Hold down the CTRL keyboard key to make square points. Click at the lower right corner of the sewing machine base to place the first point. Moving clockwise, click at each corner of the lines in the machine, continuing to hold down the CTRL key, to make points along the outline of the machine, excluding the line between the machine arm and base and the line between the hand wheel and machine. Your points will appear as in the illustration at right. 15. When you are back beside the first point, the mouse cursor will show a small + sign. With the + sign visible, click a final point to close the line into a shape, so you can fill the area inside the outline. 16. Right click to end Polygon Draw. 17. Click Shapes. 18. Select Shape 16, an eight point star. Select Draw from Corner. 19. Click Preferences. In the Screen tab, set the Grid Size at 5mm. 20. Zoom out to see full size hoop. 21. Click OK to Preferences. 22. Place the mouse cursor one grid square in from any corner, and hold the mouse button while you drag a box to one grid square in from the opposite corner. You will create a select box one grid square smaller than the hoop boundaries on all sides, to allow room for satin stitches to form over the star shape at the hoop edges. 23. Right click to release the Shape tool. The sewing machine is too large to fit inside the star, but the star is the finished size we need. 24. In the FilmStrip, click to select the Sewing Machine Path, which will be surrounded by a select box. 25. Click and hold any corner of the select box, and drag inward to resize the sewing machine artwork, so it will fit inside the star center. If you want to keep it proportional, hold down the CTRL key while you adjust it. 26. You can place your cursor inside the select box, and then click and hold to move the machine back into place. Alternately, you can click Center in Hoop background drawing will not match, but that doesn t matter.. The 27. While still in the Draw tab, click Save as Drawing. Select your preferred folder in Save In. In File Name, type EmbossedSewMachine. Save As Type will be.4qb, Page 3 of 7

4 a vector graphic recognized by 5D Design Creator. Create the Embroidery Design 28. Click Send to Wizard. If prompted to Save Untitled, say No. 29. In Send to Wizard, select Merge All Layers. Click OK. 30. In the ExpressDesign Wizard, select Create Express Embroidery. Click Next. 31. In Reduce Colors, no changes are needed. Click Next. 32. In Choose Thread Colors, leave as is. Click Next. 33. In Fabric and Stitch Type Options, select Terrycloth in Fabric Advisor. 34. Remove the check in Underlay. 35. Leave Preferred Stitch Type at Fill. 36. Click Next. 37. Click Finish in Design Preview. 38. In the Edit tab, click in an outer corner of the fill area. Ensure the select area surrounds the square portion of the fill, and you see Pattern Fill at the lower right side of the Status Bar at the bottom. 39. Right click to open the Area properties box. 40. Change the No Border Line to Satin Line. 41. Change Pattern Fill to No Fill. 42. Change Line Width to 3.0mm, Density to 3 mm, and ensure there s a check by Underlay. 43. Click OK to Area properties. 44. Select Life View to see the design without select highlights. Cancel. 45. Select the Edit tab. In the FilmStrip, scroll to find the sewing machine shaped Pattern Fill. Click to select it in the FilmStrip. 46. Right click over the work area in the hoop to open the Area properties box. 47. Change the No Border Line to Satin Line. 48. Change Pattern Fill to No Fill. 49. Change Line Width to 3.0mm, Density to 3 mm, and ensure there s a check by Underlay. Page 4 of 7

5 50. Click OK to Area properties. 51. Click Life View again to preview the design. Cancel. 52. In the FilmStrip, click on the frame with the star shaped Pattern Fill. 53. Right click over the hoop area to open Area properties. 54. Change the Category to Standard 1. Select Pattern Select the Density tab. Change Density to Select the Options tab. Change Underlay to None. Change Angle to 0º. 57. Change the No Border Line to Triple Stitch. 58. Click OK to Area properties. 59. Click Life View, then Cancel after viewing. 60. We need an additional layer of stitches at a new angle to better lock down the loops in terry towels. 61. Ensure the star shaped Pattern Fill is selected in the FilmStrip. 62. Click Transfer Filmstrip Selection to Work Area. 63. Click Copy. 64. Click Paste. 65. Click outside the select box around the pasted object. 66. Click Undo and the pasted fill will align itself over the original object, but at the end of the FilmStrip. 67. Click on the last object in the FilmStrip (the copied star) and drag it up until it appears under the first star-shaped fill. 68. Right click over the hoop area. 69. In Area properties, select the Density tab, and ensure Density is Select the Options tab. Change the Angle to 90º so the fill will be at right angles to the first layer for better coverage. 71. Click OK to Area properties. 72. In Color Select, note the second color change is blue. The blue lines are outlines created by the Wizard. 73. Uncheck color 1 (white). 74. In the Select tools, click Make Block from Visible Area to select all the blue objects. Page 5 of 7

6 75. Click Cut to remove the blue objects from the design. 76. Click the Create tab. 77. Our design is ready to stitch! Save the Design Files 78. Click Save As. In Save In, browse to the folder of your choice. 79. In File Name, type in EmbossedSewingMachine if necessary. File type will be.can, a working design file for 5D Design Creator. 80. Click Save. 81. Click Save as Embroidery. 82. If a prompt appears that Some Stitches are Outside your Hoop Area, click Cancel. 83. Select the Edit Tab. 84. Select Make Block from Visible Area. 85. Hold down the CTRL keyboard key, while you click and drag the select box about one grid square smaller. 86. Click the right-arrow keyboard key until the blue triangular Flip Vertical handle on top of the select box is centered over the bold vertical centerline. 87. Click the down-arrow keyboard key until the blue triangular Flip Horizontal handle on the left side of the select box is centered over the bold horizontal centerline. 88. Resave the.can file. 89. Click Save As Embroidery. Select Save In, browse to the folder of your choice. In File Name, type in EmbossedSewingMachine if necessary. File Type should be.vp3 to save any notes or special thread color changes. 90. Click Save. 91. If needed, click Save As Embroidery and save in another preferred file format for your embroidery machine. Page 6 of 7

7 Add Trim Commands 92. QuickLink to 5D Organizer. 93. Add Trim Commands. Be sure to touch F5 to refresh when done, and then Send to your PFAFF sewing and embroidery machine. Remember, there are always many ways to create embroidery designs. Embossed designs usually have open areas surrounded by areas of tight fill. Often, they also have a separate border that frames the embossed areas of your design. This lesson demonstrates several skills, including how to make your own vector graphic, and send it back through the wizard. You can easily create areas of fill using the FreeHand Design Creator tools as well. To stitch your embossed design on terry, polar fleece, or other high-loft fabrics, try hooping two to three layers of INSPIRA Aqua Magic for stability when stitching plus easy wash-out when complete, and then baste the towel in the hoop with a topper to lock down the fibers in the embossed areas. Toppers are usually either a wash-away or a heat-away stabilizer. Try INSPIRA Low Heat Thermal Film, which is perforated for easy-tear away. The residue will disappear when touched with a warm dry iron, as per package directions. The film is also soft and flexible so it doesn t stiffen the embroidery where it is locked under the stitches, and strong enough the hold down the loops in terrycloth under the stitched area through future washings.
