1 About Micros oft P ublisher 2000: This version is a big step up from the previous version. You can use one of the designs in Publisher, or create your own design from scratch. Templates help you create families of publications. You can learn about layout and printing by going to school on the professionally designed publications included in this program. In addition, you can benefit by going on line to the Microsoft s Update site at and update your files with templates, time-saving tips, and troubleshooting advice. This site is updated regularly. Frame Linker Zoom Buttons Fill Color Font Color Text Frame Properties Rotate Left Rotate Right About this document This document was created using the Microsoft Publisher 2000 software. The flag at the top was created in WordArt. Pictures of the captured screen were copied from Microsoft Paint. Using the Text Frame Properties, the text in this frame was set up so that it would not be too close to the edge of the frame. The drop shadow box placed behind this text box makes it appear to float over the surface of this paper. To create it, a copy this text box was emptied then filled with a shade of gray, its edge was set to none, and it was then sent to the back and positioned slightly down and to the right of this text box. 2 Linking Text Frames 1. Create the text frame with the text tool 2. Create a second frame wherever you want it, e.g. on the same page or on another page. 3. Select the first frame with the pointer tool 4. Click on the chain link in the Connect Frames palette that pops up. 5. Move the pointer to the second frame and click anywhere inside it. Publisher will now treat the two frames as linked or threaded so that text will flow from one to the other as if they were actually the same frame, even if the frames are on different pages. Frame 1. Frame When you click on the text frame, a navigator button appears. If you click on this button, you will immediately go to the linked frame. Zooming in and out 1. Click on the drop down arrow in the toolbar next to the zoom setting. The menu to the right will pop up. Click on the view you want. 2. Click on the + or signs to zoom in or out to the next step on the list. 3. Use the F9 key to toggle back an forth between actual size and fit-inwindow size. 3 Getting Started Publisher has some great builtin helps. Some of the best are the Tutorials that are available from the Help menu. 1. Click on Help or press the F1 key. 2. When the Office Assistant comes up, type the word Demo in the search box. 3. Click on the Search button. 4. In the list that comes up, choose Tutorial Table of Contents. 5. Click the button to start the Tutorials. 6. Choose the tutorial you like and look at all its pages. Everything in Publisher exists in a frame. Internet and Technology Training Services Page 3

4 When you create a frame, the appropriate toolbar pops up. Hovering over any one of the buttons lets a message pop up to tell you what that button does. If you want more information, use the Help menu. The tools in Publisher are sensitive to the contents. Moving over a handle will bring up the RESIZE tool. Moving near the edge of a frame will bring up the Moving Van to allow you to reposition a frame. Objects exist on their own layers much like clear plastic. 5 Getting help is easy in Microsoft Publisher. The background in Publisher is like the Master Page in other programs. Whatever is on the background layer will appear on every page. Unfortunately, you can only have one background for a publication. However, you can have different backgrounds for the left and right pages of a doublesided publicat ion. 6 Remember, Sendto-Back is not the same as Send-to- Background. The buttons on the tool bar will help you arrange the layers, but you must use the menu to send a highlighted object to the background.
