FILE INSPIRATION MENUs Inspiration 1 The FILE menu lists many of the operations,or functions, that you are familiar with, such as New, Open, Save, Print, and so on. Operations that are unique to Inspiration are explained below. FAMILY Inspiration allows you to create complex, related organizational charts. Families are like layers within the main topic. A child is one layer -- you may have many children in one organization chart. You can link completely different files into one by adopting a file to one or more of your topics. PROPERTIES You can save a layout as a template, or you can select a predesigned template for your layout. The Properties menus are similar to Preferences on other progams you may have used. You can select default settings for things like Symbol, Colors for symbols, Text and lines, Font Styles, Toolbars, Margins, and so on.
INSPIRATION MENUs Continued Inspiration 2 EDIT The EDIT menu has options you will be familiar with. Cut, Copy, Paste, Select All are features you ve used before. Set New Look is one way of changing the Icon, or symbol, for a particular topic, or group of selected topics/subtopics. Paste Date simply places the current date in the text box of a selected Icon or group. Insert Graphic lets you select a graphic from a file that you can place in your Inspiration document as an Icon, or symbol. VIEW Typical VIEW options such as Zoom, Rulers and Toolbar options, in addition to special functions such as View Subtopics, Show Levels.
INSPIRATION MENUs Continued Inspiration 3 FORMAT The FORMAT menu gives you options for changing the Font, Size and Style of your text. SYMBOL The SYMBOL menu allows you to make adjustments to the symbols on your page, arrange the symbols, change page breaks, and so on. LINK The Link menu allows you to specify the look of the link: standard, 90 degrees, curved, as well as permitting you to freeze the link, or hide a link.
INSPIRATION MENUs Continued Inspiration 4 EFFECT The EFFECT menu allows you to choose the look of your symbols by changing the Line thickness, the Fill Patterns, the Line Patterns, etc. UTILITY The UTILITY menu has helpful aids which allow you to edit your file; you can check Spelling, Replace a word or phrase with another, Find a word or phrase, select of deselect Grid lines and Snap to grids.
GETTING STARTED INSPIRATION HOW-TO Inspiration 5 1.) To begin, go to the lower, left of the Windows screen and click on the button. 2.) From the PROGRAMS menu, select Inspiration 6, as shown. 3.) The Inspiration program starts with a new file in the Diagram view. The default style of idea box is in the center of the screen Diagram toolbar. Use this toolbar to add symbols and links, and to arrange your diagram. Main Idea Symbol, or Icon. This is the starting point for your diagram. Put your main idea here, then add connected ideas to it. The Symbol Palette contains different idea symbols. Grouped by Libraries. Use the tools on the Draw toolbar to move symbols, to color text and symbols and/or to draw shapes.
Inspiration 6 4.) Enter your main idea by changing the text in the Main Idea Symbol. To change the text in the symbol icon, highlight the text by clicking and dragging across the text. Then type your new text. To add additional text in the symbol icon, double click on the symbol icon and begin typing. 5.) Scroll through the Symbol Palettes to select the style of Idea box you d like: You can use the Next Library button to simply scroll through all the libraries, or you can select the center arrow to list the libraries. 6.) When you put the cursor on one of the symbols in a library, a larger picture of that symbol shows up in the box at the top of the palette window, as shown. If you have selected the Main Idea Symbol, it will switch to the symbol you ve selected from one of the libraries. To add an additional idea, or topic, icon, postion the cursor on the screen where you would like to position the new idea symbol and click the mouse once. This will place a faint on the screen. Scroll through the Symbol Pallete Libaries to select the style of idea symbol you would like. You can also click and drag a selected icon, or symbol to a new position on the screen. The symbol you ve selected will appear here The Place Keeper will change to the symbol you ve selected from the Symbol Palette Libraries. Remember to save your work!
ADDING TOPICS & LINKS Inspiration 7 7.) There are a few ways you can add Topic, or Idea, boxes to your page. This button will place your new topic either horizontally or vertically away from the original idea. One way to add a new Topic, or idea, to your main idea is to use the Create buttons. With your main idea symbol selected, use one of the two Create buttons. Refer to the illustration. Main idea Icon is selected. This button will place your new topic diagonally away from the original idea. Note: each time you add a symbol, it takes the shape of the symbol highlighted in the symbol palette. When you use the Create button the new idea symbol is added in relation to the idea box that was highlighted. To add new ideas related to your main idea, go back and highlight it after each new idea icon is created. the newly created idea is highlighted You can add text to each new idea symbol as you create it. Add as many subtopics, or ideas, to your main idea as you d like. Add text to each idea symbol that will identify the subtopic, or idea. Remember to save your work!
ADDING TOPICS & LINKS Cont. Inspiration 8 8.) Another way to add Topic, or Idea, boxes to your page is to use the Rapid Fire button (F9). The Rapid Fire button will create linked subtopics to one of the main ideas. Select the topic you want to add ideas to, then click on the Rapid Fire button. Type the text of the sub-idea. In the example shown, we used the Rapid Fire button to add the subtopic gold to the subtopic, Exports. Press Enter (Return) and the program will create a new, linked idea symbol. Continue creating new, linked idea icons simply by typing another idea in the subtopic symbol box. Press enter to create the new linked idea symbol. NOTE: You do not need to select the Rapid Fire button for each new sub-idea for the same subtopic. 9.) You can also add a new Topic box to your page by clicking on the screen where you would like to add a new idea icon, then select the icon you want (refer to Step 4) from the Icon Pallet Libraries. To add a link between idea icons that are not already linked, simply select the Link button. Then click once on the beginning Icon (where you d like the link to begin from), then click once on the destination icon. An arrowed link will be drawn between the two Icon boxes. DELETING LINKS To delete an Idea Icon, simply click on it to select it and press Delete. To remove a link between Idea Icons, simply click on the link line and delete it. Remember to save your work!
