3 Objectives This tutorial will take you through some of the basic uses of TypeEdit and you will learn how to: - Set the size of the graphics area - Set objects accurately - Use text tools - Create text variables - Generate a series of objects containing a collection of variables Settings - Size of the graphics area - Width: 180 mm - Height: 110 mm - Circle - Radius: 15 mm - Position: bottom left corner set to X = 0 and Y = 0 - Ellipse - Width: 10 mm - Height: 4 mm - Position : center point set to X = 15 and Y = 25 - Variable «Name» - Font: Arial - Height : 4 mm - Center - Position according to origin: 15 mm / 15 mm - Max length : 25 mm - Variable «Date» - Font: Arial - Height : 3 mm - Center - Variable «Num» : - Font : Arial - Position according to origin: 15 mm / 9 mm - Height : 1.5 mm - Center - Position according to origin: 15m / 4 mm - The set of values that will be associated with the variable «Name» will be imported from a text file. - The variable «DATE» will be the creation date of the file. - The set of values that will be associated with the variable Num will be created in TypeEdit. Let s start! - 2 -
4 1) SET THE SIZE OF THE GRAPHICS AREA The size of the graphics area corresponds to the size of the engraving plate. In the TypeEdit tab click Material definition in the Settings Ribbon group. Enter the values to set the size of the graphics area as shown in the screenshot below: - 3 -
5 2) CREATE THE MEDAL We will create the geometric shapes first (the medal). Click Geometrical shapes in the Mode Ribbon group. The Geometrical shapes toolbar appears. Run the Circle tool by clicking : Press F2 key then set the rectangle dimensions and position entering the following values. The lower left point of the circle will be positioned according to the origin with the following coordinates: - 4 -
6 Validate by clicking. We will now create the ellipse. Click to run the Ellipse tool. Press F2 key then set the ellipse dimensions and position entering the following values. The ellipse will be positioned according to its center point: Validate by clicking. Click Selection tool in the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT). Click outside the ellipse. You get: - 5 -
7 3) CREATE THE VARIABLES Name Creation date of the file Sequential numbers We will create the Name variable first. Click Text tools in the Mode Ribbon group. The Text toolbar appears. Run the Free text tool clicking : Click in the middle of the circle under the ellipse to position the Name variable. Run the Variable text tool clicking : - 6 -
8 The Select a variable dialog box appears: Click Select a variable then click the field and enter Name. Validate by clicking. You get: Double-click Name. You get: - 7 -
9 Enter in the Font, Paragraph and Position sections the text options stated in the Settings section on page 2 of the present document. - Font: Arial - Height : 4 mm - Centre - Position of the text according to origin: 15 mm / 15 mm - Max. length : 25 mm Validate : - pressing Enter key, or - clicking the text, or - clicking in the graphics area You get: We will now create the DATE variable text. Click in the graphics area then click Variable text once again
10 The Select a variable dialog box appears. Click Date and time. Validate by clicking. You get: Double-click DATE. You get: Enter in the Font, Paragraph and Position sections the text parameters stated in the Settings section on page 2 of the present document: - Font: Arial - Height : 3 mm - Center - Position: 15mm / 9 mm Validate : - pressing Enter key, or - clicking the text, or - clicking in the graphics area We will now create the Num variable. Click in the graphics area. Click Variable text. The Select a variable dialog box appears
11 Click Select a variable then click the field and enter Num in the field. Validate by clicking. You get: Double-click Num. You get: Enter in the Font, Paragraph and Position section the text parameters (font, text height) stated in the Settings section on page 2 of the present document. - Font: Arial - Height : 1.5 mm - Center - Position: 15mm / 4 mm Validate : - pressing Enter key, or - clicking the text, or - clicking in the graphics area You get:
12 Notes - Error: if you realize you entered a wrong parameter you can edit the text anytime either double-clicking on it or clicking Free text then moving through the text using the keyboard arrow keys. - Selection: if you want to apply a parameter to one word or to several letters or to one letter only, click Free text then click-select the word, letters or letter with the left mouse button. You can move through the text using the keyboard arrow keys. The selected word, letters or letter will turn red. You can then apply different parameters to it or them. - Keep in mind that the 3 variables are centered in the circle. 4) CREATE A SET OF OBJECTS Run the Entering variables tool by clicking : The Variables dialog box appears
13 In the chart located in the bottom part of the dialog box columns appear labeled with the names you created («Name», «Num»). Note: you can import data from files created in other programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, database, etc.). In this tutorial, we will import a text file. Click Name column header. Cells turn light mauve color. Click Import button. The Import file containing variables dialog box appears. Select the players.txt text file which is present in the DRAWS directory in TypeEdit s installation directory then click Open button
14 Another Import file containing variables dialog box appears. Under Separator in the Column separator list click ;. In the Line separator list, click Return. Click Preview button to check that you import the wanted data. The data appear in the Preview of extraction section. Click OK button. The Variables dialog box appears again. Click Num column header. Cells turn light mauve color
15 We will now create the sequence of numbers. Click Series button. The Series dialog box appears. In order to create the series of medals, start the series from # 255 entering 255 in field. Set step to 1. Click button then enter 15 in the field (which corresponds to the 15 medals). Leave trailing zero fields and empty. Click Preview button to view the sequence in the preview window on the top right side of the dialog box. Click OK button
16 You get: Click End button to close the Variables dialog box. The variable elements will be processed for engraving. We will now generate a set of 15 different medals. Click Selection tool in the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT). Select all the elements (circle, ellipse and the 3 variables). Click Text tools in the Mode Ribbon group and run the Multicopy tool clicking : Note: the Multicopy tool is also available in the Specific functions toolbar
17 The Multicopy wizard appears on the right side of the graphics area. You can duplicate the items to different layers if you want to engrave the medals on different plates. If you want to engrave the medals on one single plate you have to place the medals in one single layer. Note: you have to set the size of the working area according to the size of the engraving area of your engraving machine. Enter the data as shown in the screenshot below: No need to expand the Video example or Variables sections because variables are already imported. Check the plate Size (width and height). Its size must be identical to the size of the engraving area of the engraving machine. You can change values. Set the distance between the medals to 5 mm both in Y and in X direction. Select the Limit to variable data check box. In our case, the Total number of copies (15) appears grayed. Set the duplications in X direction to 5 and the duplications in Y direction to
18 Press to lock the position of the selection. The button is substituted with. Click OK. Finally, you get: Note: The original medal was removed.
