1 Basic Graphics with Word SETTING UP MICROSOFT WORD FOR PROJECT 1. Choose File > New from Template 2. Click Publishing Layout View, not Print Layout View. Click Blank. 3. Choose File > Page Setup. Click Orientation (Landscape Or Portrait). Click Paper Size. If you want to create a document that has a unique size, such as an envelope or card, first see if the paper size appears in the Paper Size pop-up menu. If not, you can create your own custom paper size. Custom paper sizes aren t available for some printers or for all apps. Some samples of possible options of custom projects. Posters: 11x17 Wide Screen: 16x9 Half Sheet Insert: 5.5x8.5 Facebook Cover: 8.86x3.28in (851x315px) Facebook Post: 9.79x8.21in (940x788px) Facebook Event Cover: 8.18x3.07 (784x295px) Instagram Post: 11.25x11.25in (1080x1080px) ADDING BACKGROUND IMAGE AND GRAPHICS 1. To add graphics, choose Insert > Picture > From File... and select an image file. The larger the (file) image used the less chance of image being pixley or blurry. 2. Double-click on the image, click Format > Picture. 3. Select Layout click In front of text. This allows you to be able to reposition better and layer with other images or text boxes. 4. To maintain image ratio (cause it not to stretch or get distorted from original), click Size then click Lock Aspect Ration. If image is for your background, then stretch the image to 1

2 cover the poster from edge to edge. 5. All other images, size and place where desire. EDITING IMAGES 1. Double-click on the image. Click Format > Picture. Here is where you can change and alter your image to suit your liking. * Available on newer versions of Microsoft Word there is a ribbon option that can be viewable for you to access for easy editing options. To have the ribbon viewable on screen: Click View > Ribbon, this will place a ribbon on screen. 2. What the ribbon will offer. a. Adjustments: i. Corrections. This allows you adjust brightness and contrast, softness and sharpness. ii. Recolor. This allows you to recolor the original image to a tone or saturation of your liking. iii. Artistic Filters. An assortment of textures and filters used to add an artistic element to your image. iv. Remove Background. This feature removes any portion of the background of an image you want to use. v. Crop. Crops images to the needed size. b. Picture Styles: i. Frames. Choose from a number of frames and it will frame the desired image. ii. Lines. Specify the color, width, line style for the border of the picture. iii. Visual Effect. Apply a visual effect to the selected picture, such as a shadow, reflection, glow, 3-D rotation or bevel. iv. Transparency. Change the transparency of the selected picture. c. Arrangement: i. Position. Position the selected object on the page. ii. Wrap Text. Change the way the text wraps around the 2

3 selected object. iii. Order. Change the order of objects on the page. iv. Alignment. Align the edges of selected objects. v. Grouping. Group the selected objects together so they can be treated as a single object. vi. Rotate. Rotates or flips selected objects. d. Sizing. Size select object and lock ratio. ADDING SHAPES AND TEXT BOXES 1. Choose Insert > Shape, click. 2. Click on desired shape. Add as little or as many shapes wanted. 3. Posistion, Size, Color and add Visual Effects. 4. Choose Insert > Text Box, click. The curser will then be ready for you to drop that text box into your poster and type your text. 5. Clicking on and highlighting text will allow you to make changes to the look of your text. a. Font. Choose from the various font options for you text. i. Free downloads are available online for a more desired font. Dafont.com, 1000fonts.com, Fontface.com are just a few places to visit. Once downloaded into your computers font file, it should show up in Word once being rebooted. ii. Size. Font size drop down options or manually type in a number. iii. Bold. Bold face by highlighting and clicking the B on the bar. iv. Italic. Highlight and click the I to italic any text. v. Underline Text. Highlighting and clicking U will underline text. vi. Strikethrough. Highlighting and clicking ABC will strike a line through the text. vii. Superscript. Highlighting selected text and clicking A 2 will create a smaller font sized text along the top side of larger text. viii. Subscript. Highlighting selected text and clicking A 2 will create a smaller font sized text along bottom side of larger text. ix. Change case. Highlight and click Aa to change case value of text. x. Font Color. Highlight and click the A with the color bar underneath it. Then choose desired color. xi. Highlighter. Highlight and click ABC with the yellow bar 3

4 under it to highlight text in a color of choice. xii. Text Increase/Decrease. Highlight and click A B (with arrows pointing toward each other) to increase or decrease the space between letters. xiii. Character Width. Highlight and click W (with two ended arrow) to increase or decrease the character width. b. Paragraph. i. Bulleted list. ii. Numbered list. iii. Decrease indent. iv. Increase indent. v. Change text direction. vi. Align text left. vii. Center text. viii. Align text right. ix. Justify text. x. Line spacing. i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. vii. viii. ix. x. SAVING FILE FOR PRINT OR DIGITAL USE. 1. To save and file without borders. Click Print > PDF, save as PDF. Once saved as a PDF it can be easily converted to a JPEG or PNG file. 2. To save in Word. Click File > Save. Extra Touches. 1. Pixlr (Mac). Free app to add fun and artistic elements to any graphic. 2. Pixlr.com. Free online site that allows graphic to be uploaded and have overlays and filters enhance the way your image looks. 4
