COLOR TRANSITIONS We ve seen this style emerge with the Instagram redesign and it s quickly making it s way around major brands. It is very possible for us to continue to see the use of color transitions within design. Using popping colors that transition may just be the secret formula to great visuals in 2018.
LOUD, BRIGHT, SATURATED COLORS Using loud and bright colors will help your content stand out from the meme-filled social feeds. Keep in mind, this doesn t mean you should go out and write your text with bolded red font using an orange background. Mix colors properly so that they combine to create an eye-catching image. Using tools such as Colorhunt is perfect for choosing color combos that stand out for your visuals.
RESPONSIVE LOGOS The demands of responsive web design are placing more and more pressure on logos to adapt to smaller screen sizes. But so far they just aren t responding responsively. Perhaps when designing logos for the responsive age we should try and bear the following in mind: 1. A logo is not a brand 2. A brand is not a logo 3. A logo is the same as other elements of the identity system, such as color, slogans, and emblems. 4. Logos should be simple and clear memory hooks. Nothing more, nothing less. Once we accept this the logo can start to respond responsively.
AUTHENTIC PHOTOGRAPHY An authentic image is one that looks real and directly connects to your message. It can be in the form of a photo (custom or stock), video or illustration. Authentic doesn t always mean realistic either a great custom cartoon can also feel authentic to a user. Authentic images fit the persona of your audience and user base. They establish a connection that users relate to because they can see themselves who they are or maybe who they want to be in the images and as part of the overall story your website is telling.
More depth (with semi-flat design) Like gradients, shadows were put on the back burner as we stripped realism and skeuomorphism from our designs in favor of extreme minimalism and two-dimensional design. The purists may not like it, but depth has proven that it can fit within the evolving ethos of flat design by improving usability and simplicity, both of which are core principles of flat design. Going forward you will see shadows become a staple of the semi-flat design movement. We re already seeing them being used to enhance icons and illustrations, as well as websites, app interfaces and even print designs.
GEOMETRIC SHAPES The geometric designs that will pop out the most will be ones that are combined with other popular design elements and something that is unique. The low poly designs are being combined with bright colors, hand drawn shapes, and duotones, to really stand out while giving a much more modern look to graphics.
Bold typography When it comes to typography in 2018 you ll find that the bigger and bolder, the better. Designers will be opting for artistic effects, extra-large font sizes and huge headlines. Helvetica-inspired sans serifs have dominated digital spaces, and while they ll remain as fashionable as ever (especially their extra-bold family members), we can expect more typeface variety in the coming year.
PATTERNS From pretty pastels ( millennial pink, anyone?) to electric hues, color schemes from the 80 s and 90 s have been gaining popularity once again. With the movement away from ultra-flat designs, expect to see the abstract and geometric patterns inspired by the era move from the fringes into the mainstream as well.
The Glitch Effect The corrupted image, i.e. the glitch effect, has been one of the most popular trends in the digital world lately. Apparently, what was once annoying for the spectator has now been turned into a truly wanted effect. Obviously, horror movie fans have been familiar with this one for ages. Year 2018 is the year when corrupted images take over graphic design world, as well.
