1 Author/Editor s View Adding Text & Modifying Text on an Existing Page (Article) Assumed Preliminaries: (1) You ve registered with a username and password you selected and that you still remember. (2) Lloyd or Dave have changed your status from Registered to Author (or Editor ). (3) Lloyd or Dave have already created a page (probably with just a title if it is a brand new page). Confirm the existence of the page you wish to edit by going to the new website at and confirming that the page exists under a menu at the new site. If you don t see your page in the menus, contact Lloyd (webmaster@holytrinitymail.org) or Dave 1
2 and they will create a new blank page after discussing with you where (under which menu) the new page best fits. Actions: Find your page to be edited at by pulling down one of the main menus as shown. On the left hand side of the screen (see arrow in the preceding figure) select Login. Enter your Username and Password to log in. If successful, you will be taken to the Holy Trinity website homepage. Then select your page (the page you wish to edit) from the menu. 2
3 When your page-to-be-edited opens, you should see a small pencil icon above the title as shown at the arrow above. Click on this pencil icon to open your page for editing. 3
4 This Editor window is where you can type (or paste in) new text. You can also revise the existing text. Check for: (1) something already selected by Dave/Lloyd for Section and Category [not Uncategorized ], and (2) a Title field that matches the first line of your text. [So that we can be consistent on our website, please use Heading 1 in 18 point for the format of that first line of text.] Start typing in your text. We are trying to be consistent throughout our parish website by using Arial 12-point as our typical paragraph text font. Use bold, italics, and underlining just like you would in Microsoft Word. Feel free to experiment with the other text editor features (icons) located in the gray area just above your text entry block. To make some of your words a clickable link to a website, just highlight the text and select the chain-link icon to Insert/Edit Link. 4
5 When you click that chain icon ( Insert/Edit Link ), a small window will pop-up. In the text block marked Link URL, type in the full web address [including the corresponding to your typed text. [Hint: Since this entry must be letter-perfect for the link to work, instead of typing a complex URL in from scratch, consider first going to the destination webpage, copying the URL for that destination page, and then right-click and paste into the Link URL box.] One of our responsibilities as article authors is to ensure that all our links are correct and working. Few things are more frustrating to website visitors than broken links. It s the responsibility of each of us as article authors/editors (not just Lloyd or Dave or an Administrator) to periodically review our articles to make sure that the text is still correct and all the links still work. Every one of our web pages (Joomla calls them articles ) ought to have an owner or a point of contact shown on that page. This is especially important for ministries and programs that could invite a parishioner inquiry. 5
6 The preceding procedures described a link to an external website. However, f you are linking to a page already on the Holy Trinity website, use the Linkr button located along the bottom edge of the Editor window as shown here. In the example shown above, I wanted the word Music in the Liturgical Ministries page to link to the Music Ministry page. After selecting the text Music in the first page, and the Linkr button, I selected Articles, found the Music Ministry article, and selected Get Link as shown in the popup window above. 6
7 Notice that the selected link text (my name in the last line of edited text) can also be an address and not just a link to an internal or external webpage. 7
8 When you are finished working on this page, remember to select the Save button. You can then work on other pages or select Logout. (If you wish to add an image [picture] to your page, see the next section of this handout.) Note that all your work should be in the Editor window and not the Publishing window below your edited text. 8
9 Adding Images (or Documents) to Your Page Maybe you have an image file on your computer. Or, it could be an image already on the Holy Trinity website or from another website. Place your cursor at the position in your edited text where you want to place the image. The select the Image button (see white arrow above) located at the lower left of your Editor window 9
10 In this example, I found an image of a missal from another website (located in a Google image search) and pasted the URL of that image into the Image URL text field. After typing in a few words for the image description (which helps people with disabilities use our website), click the Insert button in the window. 10
11 You can then work with the image on the page by using the Insert/Edit Image button in the toolbar above your edited text. It is an icon that looks like a green tree and is located at the arrow shown above. First, select your image in the Editor window and then select the tree icon. 11
12 The maximum width of images is 620 pixels. Ideally, you should resize the image on your computer to the proper size before uploading. You may also adjust the size of the image or its alignment at this point. Selecting the tree icon in the toolbar will popup a window where you can adjust the size, alignment, and other properties, as show above. Q: What if you have an image (like a photograph or graphic) or document (e.g., in Word) on your computer that you want to attach to your article? If you use Firefox as your browser: First, put your cursor in the section of the page where you want to add the image. Then click the Image button that's underneath (lower left corner) the Editor window. This will bring up a little window where you can enter choose an image already uploaded to the HTP website or upload a new image from your computer. 12
13 If you use Internet Explorer as your browser: The Image button on the lower left of the Editor window may not work for you. If it doesn t, your photographs or documents to Lloyd or Dave. In your , let them know where in the article the document/image should appear. When uploading documents, put them in the Documents file. When uploading images, put them in the Pictures file. In Firefox, clicking on Image at the lower left of the Editor window brings up a Window showing the Pictures folder where we are keeping our images. Select the image, describe it, and then click Insert at the upper right of that window. If the file is on your computer, click Browse, find it on your computer, and then click Start Upload to first put it in the Pictures folder. 13
