UCT Local Council Website Quarterly Training 2.1 November 10, 2012 Changing your password Adding photos & PDF files Creating website & links 10/21/2015 1
This training assumes you have already read the UCT Local Council Websites Training document and know how to login and perform basic functions in your website. If you need a refresher, please visit the Member Resource Center of the UCT website under the Members Area tab and read the training document listed under Local Council Website Admin Training AS A REMINDER, TO LOGIN TO YOUR WEBSITE, GO TO: For example, Ohio Council 1 = *only lowercase works LOGIN TO YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL SITE Username = STATEorPROVINCEabbreviationCouncil# (example = oh1) Alternative Councils Username = AltCouncil# (example = alt2000) Password = fraternal2012 Once logged in, you will see your Wordpress Dashboard: 1. CHANGING YOUR PASSWORD: To change your login password, from the Dashboard screen click on Profile in the left-hand navigation. 2
This will bring you to your Profile page which looks like this: Scroll down the page to the New Password boxes and enter your new desired password (it should be 7+ character long). Click Update Profile to save. Be sure to write down and save your password. If you lose this, you can have your password reset by contacting David Knapp at At this point you may also update other information like First and Last Name and address. Your Profile information is for Wordpress Admin purposes only and will not be shared on your website. 3
2. ADDING PHOTOS & PDF FILES: To add a photo to your website, navigate to the page you wish to add the photo to and click the gray Edit button. Here is the Local News & Events page. From the edit view, place your cursor (left click) in the text box where you wish to add the photo. Then click the Upload/Insert graphic above the text box. 4
From the Insert Media window you have the option of uploading pictures from your computer or by choosing pictures from your Media Library. To upload a picture drag and drop the file into the window, or click Select Files to choose files from your computer. NOTE: Picture files must be less than 3 MG. Your uploaded photo will appear in the Media Library screen. The check mark means it s already selected. Complete the pictures details in the right column. 1. Be sure to include a descriptive title for your picture. 2. Add a caption. This will appear with the picture on the web page. 3. Copy the title and enter as the Alt Text. These Key Words will help browsers find your page. 4. A description is for your benefit and is optional. 5. Choose an alignment: left, center, right. 6. You can add a URL link to your picture if you want. Copy the destination URL and paste into this box. 7. Choose a size. 8. Click the Insert into page button. 5
Once you save the information, the photo (and caption, if used) will appear on your editable webpage. YOUR PHOTO IS NOT YET PUBLISHED Be sure to click Preview Changes to review your page (this opens the preview in a new tab or page) and if satisfied, close the preview window which takes you back to the editable webpage. Click Update. This publishes the photo to your webpage. Don t like it? To make changes click on the picture to see the editing tool bar. Click on the pencil icon to see all the settings for position, size, cropping, captions and more. 6
Use the same process (adding a photo) to add a PDF file such as a newsletter to your website. Select the PDF file to drag/drop or upload. The file name will be the same as your PDF file, so be descriptive and use text you want to see on your webpage. Include a description for the file (you probably won t use a caption for a PDF file). Click insert into Post. This returns to the editable webpage where your link is visible (in blue/linked text as pictured below). Be sure to click Preview Changes to review your page and link, and if satisfied, click Update. This publishes the PDF link to your website. 7
Here s a view of the published page with PDF links: Here is a good video on YouTube that explains in more depth how to place a picture on your Wordpress page CREATING WEBSITE & LINKS: To add a website or link to your website, navigate to the page you wish to add the link to and click the gray Edit button. 8
From the edit view, place your cursor (left click) in the text box where you wish to add the link and type the text you wish to click on to access the link, highlight that text, and then click on the chain link in the toolbar: This opens the Insert/edit link box. Next to URL type either the complete website address (including or to add an address link, type: be sure to type mailto: with no spaces and the address behind that with no spaces. Tick the box to Open link in a new window/tab so visitors are not moved from your website and click Add Link. 9
This returns to the editable webpage where your link is visible (in blue/linked text as pictured below) be sure to click Preview Changes to review your page and link, and if satisfied, click Update. This publishes the link to your webpage. Here s a view of the published page with link: 10
