THIS GUIDE Held in conjunction with HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR PAPER FOR THE th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON #societyformining
Title of Your Paper Subtitle Here If You Have One Example with One Author: Author Name Author Affiliation Last Example with Multiple Authors, Same Affiliation: Author Name, Author Name, and Author Name Author Affiliation Last Example with Multiple Authors, Different Affiliations: Author Name Author Affiliation Author Name Author Affiliation Last (used for final author in the list; this style adds the space below) ABSTRACT The title of your paper uses the style Title unless you also have a subtitle. If you have a subtitle, use the style Title With Subtitle so that the extra space below is not included. A subtitle is optional, but uses the style Subtitle. For Author Name, type your full name, first then last, as you want it to appear. The Author Affiliation is where you list the company or organization you represent. If there are multiple authors, use the alternatives shown above. The abstract should be at the beginning of the paper. The heading uses the Heading 1 style, and the text is the same as regular text as described in the following paragraph. Heading Level 1 All headings should be typed using initial caps (such as: The Definition of Contingency). When you apply the style Heading 1, or Heading 2, or Heading 3, the text will be formatted automatically in the desired case and font by the style definition. All regular body text uses the style Normal. This style has a first-line indent and no spacing above or below. Bold and italic are allowed in the text, but avoid using underline. Extract text uses the style named Extract. Used for including text extracted from another source. Slightly smaller, indented margins left and right. It can contain multiple paragraphs, but should generally not be very lengthy. There will be space above and below an extract. If the body text resumes after the extract, it should be styled using the Normal style. Heading Level 2 This is an example of a paragraph following a second-level heading. It is also formatted using the style Normal. Note that there are styles you will see in the Styles listing that are not needed. You can simply ignore them. Footnotes1 may be added and will be automatically formatted using the style Footnote Text. 1 Footnotes will automatically receive the appropriate style. 2
Heading level 3 is sentence style. It is easiest to type the heading, then at least some of the paragraph to follow. Apply the style Normal to the paragraph text, then select just the heading text and apply the Heading 3 style. No more than three heading levels should be used. Bulleted text uses the style named Bulleted. There is space above and below the whole list. There is no space between the bullet items. 1. Numbered text is similar to bulleted text. 2. It uses the style Numbered. 3. The spacing characteristics are the same as bulleted text. The text following either a bulleted or numbered list should be styled using Normal. It will have a first-line indent. TABLES AND FIGURES Tables and figures need to be numbered sequentially and include captions. For a table, the caption should be placed above the table as in the example here. For a figure, it is placed below the figure. Tables and figures should have references in the text, such as as shown in Table 1. Table numbers are independent from figure numbers. For example, the first table, whether or not there are figures, will be numbered as Table 1, and the first figure, whether or not there are tables, will be Figure 1. All photos, graphics, drawings, and line art should be labeled as figures (not Photo 1, Graphic 1, etc.). The reference in the text should be capitalized as shown here. Table 1. Calculated depth of corrosion for the DRTC tunnel concrete lining (mm) Concrete Aggregate Alkalinity 50-Year Service Life 100-Year Service Life (1.7") 89 (3.5") (0.9") 43 (1.7") (0.6") 30 (1.2") (0.4") 23 (0.9") As with other elements, regular text that follows a table or figure is styled as Normal. Tables and figures are preferably aligned to the top or bottom margin. The table or figure should normally come after the reference to it in the text. An exception is when you place a table or figure at the top of a page; its reference can be in the first paragraph immediately following it. You may include multiple tables and/or figures in sequence on a page, but do not place body text between tables or figures on the same page. 3
This is a figure source credit Figure 1. Unwedge shaft shotcrete support results It is easiest to keep a table or figure caption together with its respective table or figure by first creating a text box, then placing the caption and the table or figure inside the text box. The text box can be sized as necessary (normally full width) and the caption and its table or figure will move together. Set the internal margins of the text box to 0. The margin above and/or below the text box (using wrap text top and bottom) should be set to Image Quality Use the following suggestions for obtaining the highest image quality in your paper. Illustrations. Examples of illustrations are drawings, diagrams, flowcharts, and schematics. They are typically vector files that may be placed using the Insert > Pictures command. Typical file formats include JPG, EPS, WMF, and PICT. To place PowerPoint or Excel charts, Copy your chart or slide and use Paste Special > Microsoft Office Graphic Object. Doing so yields the highest resolution when printed or enlarged onscreen. Digital photos. A digital photo (at 72 dpi) need to be four times the print size for good reproduction. Digital photographs may be provided as JPEG (expect some loss of quality if the file is compressed) or PNG. In general, the file size should be at least 500 KB if black and white, and 1.5 MB if color. Table 2 is a rough guide to resolution and digital photos; 2 to 4 megapixels is a good range of file size for print. Table 2. Photo file sizes Megapixels Resolution Common Print Size (roughly 300 dpi) 2 MP cm / 4 6" 3 MP cm / 5 7" 4 MP cm / 6 8" 4
Scanned images. At least 300 dpi is necessary for the best printing quality. Files formats are typically TIFF, BMP, and JPEG. Low-resolution (72 75 dpi) images, such as those found on Web pages, may appear legible onscreen but will not reproduce well when printed. View the image onscreen at 400% to see if there is enough quality for printing (it should not be blurry). PAGE LIMIT There is a 10-page limit to the length of each paper, including figures and tables. EDITORIAL TIPS For easy reference, here are a few of the most commonly misunderstood or misused points of style. Please consult the SME Book Publishing Style and Editorial Guide for more details or for anything that isn t covered here. In publishing, only one space is used between sentences and after colons (not the two spaces we learned in typing class). Use capitalization and italics judiciously. It is not always necessary to capitalize or italicize for emphasis or for the name of company departments, pieces of equipment, titles, offices, acronyms, or terminology. In general, most compound words with prefixes such as non, ex, re, pre, are not hyphenated. But use the hyphen when the second word is a proper noun (e.g., post-vietnam). Full dates are written like this in running text: January 1, Months and years may be abbreviated in tables to save space. When the date doesn t include the day, there is no comma between the month and the year: January Always place periods and commas within quotation marks. Place colons and semicolons outside quotation marks. In a series consisting of three or more elements, separate each element by a comma (often called the series comma ). If commas are used within an element, use semicolons. Commonly used foreign words do not have to be printed in italics: et al., in vitro and in situ. Numbers under 10 are spelled out EXCEPT for expressions of time, measurement and money. A single number more than 10 is always given as a number unless it is the first word in a sentence. When using numbers of one thousand or more, commas should be used between every group of three digits. Example: 4,000. Exceptions are addresses and years. Avoid mentioning specific commercial product names. If at all possible, use generic equivalents. Trademark symbols are not required (e.g.,, ). Avoid e.g. and i.e. in running text. These abbreviations are OK in parentheses or in tables and figures. Use periods in both. Use commas after them. 5
REFERENCES References may be included at the end of the paper. They should be styled using the Reference style and by following the SME examples for citing references. All reference entries should be listed in alphabetical order based on the first author s last name. Place a shortened reference in the text directly after the material cited. There is no comma between a single author s name and the date (e.g., Smith 20). Use semicolons between multiple citations in the text (e.g., Smith 20; Anderson et al. 1989; Burns and Godin 2015). The SME Style and Editorial Guide contains details on styling your reference citations. Include only those works that are directly cited in your document at the end in a References list. Do not include works that have not been cited in the text. An example reference list is included below. Book Example Anderson, R.L., Jones, R.F., and Smith, J.L Book Title in Initial Caps and Italicized. New York: John Wiley and Sons. Edited Book Example Burns, W., and Godin, L., eds Primary Analytical Processing. Berlin: Weinheim VCH. Chapter in an Edited Book Example Garnar, T.E Zirconium and hafnium minerals. In Industrial Minerals and Rocks, 6th ed. Edited by D.D. Carr. Littleton, CO: SME. Journal/Periodical Example Malteesh, C., Somasundaran, P., and Gruber, G.A Fundamentals of oleic acid adsorption on phosphate flotation feed during anionic conditioning. Min. Metall. Process. 13(1): Unpublished Report Example Smith, B.C Metal Recoveries in Mines, Morrison, CO. Unpublished report. 6
