Overview Overview About Desire2Learn Learning Suite 10.1 Learning Suite 10.1 continues on the heels of version 10 with significant usability improvements in core tools and across all tools. Content, Discussions, and User Progress have been revamped to increase usability and add functionality that will improve the experience and save time for instructors, course designers, and students. Drag and drop file upload is pervasive across the system while updates to Grades and Dropbox introduce new options and improve consistency of grade display for all users. A new Video Note tool is available in this release, as well as integration with the new Desire2Learn Binder app enabling learners to interact with course content on a tablet device. We ve continued to build on our adherence to standards with new support for Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) version support, and have introduced some usability improvements for administrators that provide easy, everywhere access to common administrative tools. About this document The following sections of this document provide an introduction to the upcoming changes in Desire2Learn Learning Suite This document is meant to get you information to start planning your upgrade with respect to timing, testing, and updating resources. This document is currently focused on user interfaces that affect all Learning Suite tools, and on upcoming changes in Learning Environment. Features Guides for other Learning Suite products are available as separate documents. Content Revamp We re excited to be making significant changes in 10.1 to elevate the Content experience in Desire2Learn Learning Environment for instructors and course designers managing courses, and for students who are consuming and interacting with course content from a wide range of computers and mobile devices. 38 Due Date Support in Dropbox passed since the previous login. Due Date Support in Dropbox An often-requested feature that clients will be excited for in version 10.1 is the ability to set a dropbox folder due date, which is independent from the folder availability. Now, instructors can set folders up to be available the day after the material is covered and until the end date of the class by not setting an availability end date, and they can set a due date to clearly communicate the date until which they will accept on-time submissions. Alternatively, the instructor could create an acceptable late submission window by setting an availability end date at the appropriate time after the due date. Due dates can also be specified in Special Access giving specified users a different due date from their classmates. In addition to the changes to the management pages, updates to the Dropbox screens and language highlight due dates for students, and late submissions for instructors. These late indicators in the interface are dynamic and are based on the submitting user s due date. So, if a submission previously flagged as late has its due date extended for the user, it won t be flagged as late in the interface by Desire2Learn Incorporated. All rights reserved 38

Improved Control of Grades Display in Tools Improved Control of Grades Display in Tools Prior to version 10.1, students would often see different formatting when looking at their grades from the Grades tool, and when looking at the score from the Dropbox or Quizzes tool. Version 10.1 introduces an important change focusing on consistency. With this change, assessment tools will display grades based on how the associated grade item is configured to display. Now, instead of showing 9/10 on the dropbox feedback page, and an A if the student viewed their grade via the associated grade item in the Grades (based on the grade item display settings), the grade item display settings are now used to show an A on the dropbox feedback page. To enable this, instructors can now manage the display options for the Student View of a grade item with checkboxes for show points grade, show grade scheme symbol, and show grade scheme color. This introduces the ability to control what students see, whereas previously only the management view could be configured by Desire2Learn Incorporated. All rights reserved 39

Improved Logging and Recovery of Deleted Grade Items From within assessment tools, instructors can now preview what a student will see from within the tool, and have a link to manage the grade item display properties from the preview as well. Improved Logging and Recovery of Deleted Grade Items Logging has been added in version 10.1 to track when and who created, deleted, or restored grade items. This tool-level Event Log is accessible from Manage Grades by Desire2Learn Incorporated. All rights reserved 40

Discussions List Improvements We ve also introduced the ability to easily restore deleted grade items. Now, if a grade item is accidentally deleted from Grades, instructors can easily recover the deleted item (and all student grades) themselves. They can also review improved logs of grade item changes, including deletion and restoring of grade items. This important new feature saves our clients time by allowing self-service grade item recovery, meaning they don t have to engage Desire2Learn support to identify and recover deleted items. In addition, a more impactful warning message is now displayed when a user attempts to delete a grade item or category to help avoid accidental deletions. Discussions List Improvements The Discussions List page in Discussions has been revamped in version This updated page has had significant layout improvement and provides filters allowing users to easily find shared topics, topics with unread posts, or topics with unapproved messages (only for users with permission to approve messages). The list of topics in each forum can 2012 by Desire2Learn Incorporated. All rights reserved 41

be collapsed which greatly improves user experience on this page, especially when there are lots of forums and topics, or long descriptions of either. For each displayed topic, users can see the number of unread posts, the total number of posts, the number of views of posted messages, and the number of unapproved posts (only for users with permission to approve messages and for topics configured to require approval). Details of the last post including user and date are also displayed beside each topic. Quick Recording of Video with Video Note We are excited to introduce Desire2Learn Video Note, which enables users to quickly and effectively add video recorded from their webcams into Learning Suite content by Desire2Learn Incorporated. All rights reserved 42

Quick Recording of Video with Video Note Video Note is included at no extra cost to clients as a part of Learning Environment Clients will receive a basic storage/bandwidth package at no charge, and additional usage can be purchased. Video Note is turned off by default upon installation of version 10.1, and clients can schedule activation through their Desire2Learn Account Manager. Customizable role permissions With Video Note, it is simple to setup permissions for recording and searching/embedding of recorded content. For recording, you can decide whether or not a role can capture video. For searching and embedding you can choose whether a role can search and insert media captured by themselves only or whether they can search and insert media captured by any user. Intuitive recording interface Adding recorded webcam video has never been easier since the introduction of Video Note. As long as the browser supports Flash video format properly, the user will be able to record personal videos with the click of a button. Incorrect Flash settings are reported to the user so they can easily take corrective action. Tight knit Learning Environment integration Anywhere where Insert Stuff or Video Attachments are currently supported in the Desire2Learn Learning Environment, Video Note supports the recording and embedding of videos. This ensures that wherever users want recorded content, they can have it. Customizable content titles and descriptions Customizing the title and description allows even users that are unable to see the recorded content to at least see the title and description, ensuring that they are able to understand what is going on in the video. Search through existing content With Video Note it is easy to find existing content to post using the search feature. This ensures that existing recordings are reusable multiple times by multiple users by Desire2Learn Incorporated. All rights reserved 43

IMS LTI Support IMS LTI Support IMS Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) support enables third party integrations to send grades back to the Learning Environment grade book as students interact with the external tool. Grade items can be automatically created as data is returned from the integrated tool, or an external learning tools link can be associated with a grade item in advance. This is similar to the behavior of SCORM objects sending grades to the grade book. External Learning Tool links now also communicate to the external tool the list of users that the launching user (with the LTI Mentor role) can have access to in the external tool, typically used for parent or auditor access, which is populated by the configured auditor relationships in Learning Environment by Desire2Learn Incorporated. All rights reserved 44

Easy Access to Admin Tools in Minibar Easy Access to Admin Tools in Minibar Users with access to items found in the Admin Tools widget and Admin Tools navigation bar link can now easily access those items from a persistent icon in the minibar, allowing them to get to those tools even if the Admin Tools widget or Admin Tools navigation link aren t available in the course they are currently accessing by Desire2Learn Incorporated.
