3 Chromebooks Google s vision of the future Chrome OS eliminates: antivirus software locally installed applications the need to update applications and drivers the need for extensive external storage But, Chrome OS also eliminates: The use of high-end productivity apps Can you use your Chromebook as your ONLY laptop? Chromebooks Laptops that run Chrome OS Chrome OS Chrome browser Plus a few extras that provide a limited computer interface around the Chrome browser Those Extras A Google account login screen that allows users to access: Chrome bookmarks Chrome extensions Chrome apps Other browser data will sync with your Chromebook. Anyone can log into any Chromebook & access his/her account A desktop taskbar with an app menu listing your installed Chrome apps Window management features that allow you to open apps in their own dedicated windows, easily resize windows to take up the left and right sides of your screen, and so on. Chrome s settings page with some functionality Files app along with local file viewers that allow you to view images, watch videos, play music, open documents, extract.zip files, etc. Some packaged apps that run offline: Scratchpad A camera A calculator A help app that teaches you about your Chromebook Chromebook Challenges Printing: Google Cloud Print Google Cloud Print Connector for older printers Don t try to plug your printer directly into your Chromebook, though that won t work. Chromebook Challenges Using Local Files with Chrome OS Files App: allows you to download and view many common file types offline gives you access to your Google Drive Chromebooks support the use of USB drives, USB mice, external hard drives, SD cards, digital cameras, etc. for external storage 3
