2 ITS Policies and Information Laptop Transfer of Ownership Terms Student/graduate assumes ownership of laptop issued by the University. Student/graduate assumes responsibility for all maintenance and repairs related to the computer equipment issued by the University. DMU Help Desk support for the University issued laptop will no longer be available after June 30, Student/graduate agrees to run the restore process provided as a part of the graduation packet on the laptop issued to the student by the University no later than June 30, Student/graduate acknowledges it is their personal responsibility for backing up files prior to running the restore process and the University is not responsible for any lost data. Access of DMU Electronic Resources Student/graduate must change their account password and set a security question via the Centrify Password Reset tool by June 30, DMU Office 365 license will change to only after June 30, Office 365 OneDrive access will be removed and no access to data stored there will be allowed after June 30, Student/graduate will no longer have access to campus printers and their printing account. All remaining balances will be forfeit as of June 30, Services After Graduation After commencement, there will be changes that will affect your DMU laptop and access to some DMU services. These changes will occur on June 30, Office 365 Once your status changes from student to alumnus, your login name for your account will also change. Currently your login name is [DMU username]@student.dmu.edu. If you are accessing after June 30, 2017, you will use [DMU username]@alumni.dmu.edu. Office 365 License Your Office 365 Pro Plus license through Des Moines University will expire on June 30, You will keep your access, but will no longer have access to any other Office 365 services. This includes, but is not limited to, Office Pro Plus (Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive etc). Campus Printing Access to campus printers and your printing credits will expire on June 30, No refunds and/or transfers will be given for any unused print credits. Please perform all campus printing prior to June 30, Help Desk Support After June 30, 2017, your DMU Help Desk support will become limited. The Help Desk will be available to answer general questions, but support for your laptop will end on June 30, Manufacturer Warranty DMU hardware support will end on June 30, You may still be able to contact the manufacturer directly for any warranty or part related claims. 3 Before the Restore IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL STEPS IN THIS SECTION BE COMPLETED BEFORE YOU RUN THE WINDOWS 7 RESTORE PROCESS! Backup Your Files 1) Back up your files before you begin the restore process. a. Once the restore process starts, all files on the laptop will be deleted. 2) Click on Start, then Computer. 3) Browse to Local Disk C > Users > your user folder 4) Expand the folder with your username. a. Do not expand the folder username.local. 5) Copy the following folders to an external source (external hard drive or cloud drive) a. Desktop b. Documents c. Favorites d. Links e. Music f. Pictures g. 4 If you would like to backup Sticky Notes, Firefox or Chrome Bookmarks or other personal files outside of the location above, copy and paste to your external source to restore later. Sticky Notes can be located in AppData under Roaming/Microsoft/Sticky Notes If you do not see the AppData Folder: Open File Explorer Click on the View Ribbon Click on the Options drop-down menu Click on change Folder and Search options Click on the View tab Click in the circle to the right of Show hidden files, folders, and drives Click on Apply, then OK To backup Mozilla Firefox Bookmarks, go to: To backup Chrome Bookmarks, go to: Suspend Encryption Click on Start. Click on Control Panel. Click twice on BitLocker Drive Encryption. Click on Suspend Encryption. Delete Enrolled Fingerprints Enrolled fingerprints need to be deleted before the restoration process. If you do not delete the enrolled fingerprints, the fingerprint scanner will not function after the restoration process has run. Double click ON the HP Protect Tools or HP Client Security icon in the lower right hand corner of the taskbar. If you haven t already created a password, it will ask you to do so here. Click on Administrative. Click on Administrative Console. Click on Yes. Click the + to the right of Credentials. Click on Fingerprints. Click on the Enrollment tab. Click on Clear All Data. Click on Yes to delete all data from the secure fingerprint reader. Write Down The Windows 7 Product Key For The Laptop Remove the battery. Write down the Windows 7 Product Key found on the blue Microsoft sticker. Put the battery back in. Page 4 of 6

5 Running the Windows 7 Restore Process from the USB Drive Make sure the laptop battery is installed and it is plugged into the external adapter. Boot to the Restore USB Plug in the USB drive and turn on your laptop. When you see the blue HP logo appear, quickly press F9 and keep pressing F9 until the Boot Menu comes up. Use the Up or Down Arrow keys to select USB Hard Drive 1 SMI Corporation USB DISK. At this point, no files or data have been deleted from your computer. Restore the Computer s Software When Windows is finished loading the restore program, Press any key to continue. Press Y. Press Enter. ENTER. Proceeding past this step will delete all files and folders from the laptop. From this point on, DO NOT TURN OFF THE laptop. The restore program will now run through the automated processes. The restore process will reboot the laptop several times. During this time, no action is necessary. It takes about thirty minutes to complete the restore process. Set Up Windows Select Country or Region. Defaults to the United States. Select Time and Currency. Defaults to English (United States). Select Keyboard layout. Defaults to US. Key in a username. Key in a computer name. Username and computer name can t be the same. Key in a password. Key in password again. Skip Activating Windows. This will be activated after the setup is completed. Select I accept the license terms. Select Use recommended settings for Windows Updates. Select the correct time and date settings. You can skip setting up the wireless connection and do that after Windows is set up. Windows will finish the setup process and your Desktop will show up. Page 5 of 6

6 Activate Windows If you do not activate your copy of Windows within 30 days, Windows will revert to a reduced functionality mode. Connect the laptop to the internet. Click on Start. Right click on Computer. Click on Properties. Click on Change Product Key. Key in the Windows 7 Product Key that you wrote down earlier. Wait for the Activation was successful message to come up. Click on Close. Run Windows Updates Connect the laptop to the internet. Click on the Start button. Click on Control Panel. Change View by from Category to either Large icons or Small icons. Click Windows Update. Click on Check for updates. Install any updates flagged as required or recommended. Page 6 of 6
