2 About Atril Established in 1992 Objective: to develop an effective alternative to Machine Translation Visit us at stand 29 Back in 1992, two engineers working in the translation field were dissatisfied by the results of MT (and that s probably still true today, although MT does have its place). Computer Assisted Translation systems in those days were similarly disappointing. They were all DOS-based (remember the DOS commands like DIR, BAT? it seems like another age now) and they were capable of processing any type for file just so long as it was plain text! Emilio Benito, one of Atril s founders and chief technical guru set about creating a Windows CAT tool, and in 1993 Déjà Vu was born. 2

5 Technology Leader Déjà Vu was the first CAT tool for Windows to use RDBMS for reliability and scalability to integrate with Microsoft Word 32-bit CAT tool to offer integrated translation environment to offer multilingual projects Déjà Vu 1.0 was the first CAT tool for Windows 3.1, and was also the first TM tool to work directly inside Microsoft Word. Its speed and overall performance quickly established it as the most advanced translation tool of its time. As the user base grew, their requests for enhancements and desirable features found their way into future releases including a file alignment feature that was an extra on all translation tools at that time. In 1996 a full 32-bit version was introduced. It is important to stress that this was not a 16-bit version that was ported to 32-bit. Much of the core product was restructured to take full advantage of the power of Windows 95/NT. At a time when the use of RDBMS (relational database management systems) for TM tools came into question, we stuck with our approach - and since them the industry has proved us right. Déjà Vu 2.0 was also a first in other categories - it was the first CAT tools to provide a complete integrated translation environment combining TM, terminology databases and quality assurance, providing a single consistent interface in which many different types of files could be translated. It also introduced the handling of multilingual translation projects, ensuring true consistency across files. 5

With this objective in mind, we were the first to emphasize the integration of terminology into TM technology, and the first to move the granularity of translation units down from the sentence level. Hunt (2003) Translation Technology Failures and Future; (XI:4.6); It is now widely acknowledged that to maximize translation reuse, TM tools must work at the phrase level. At Atril, we recognized this need years ago when we began integrating EBMT (Example Based Machine Translation) techniques into our Assemble feature. Either by intelligently repairing fuzzy matches to turn them into exact ones, or by piecing together translations from existing portions found in the TM or terminology database, no other tool achieves such a high level of translation reuse. 6
