1 Revision: 4, 28-Oct-10 The Xpress Vehicle Interface Program (VIP) application is used to: Detect the firmware you already have installed on your computer and offer a list of available updates. Search the vehicle database and offer a list of solutions available for that particular vehicle. Install and flash firmware onto your hardware. This guide is specifically designed the help you troubleshoot issues you may encounter while installing one or both versions of the XpressVIP4.2 application. Issues may be related to a miscommunication between devices or with the Internet, a software programming error, and/or a hardware malfunction. 3 Revision: 4, 28-Oct-10 Minimum hardware and software requirements The recommended basic hardware requirements to run XpressVIP4.2 are: Processor: Pentium III 1 GHz or higher. RAM: at least 1 GB. The following operating systems are supported: Windows Windows XP. Windows Vista 32-bits and 64-bits. Windows 7. XpressVIP4.2 Live requires.net Framework 3.5 or later to be installed on your computer. How do I tell if XpressVIP4.2 is fully installed? 1. Click Start. 2. Click Run and in the popup window type: appwiz.cpl. 3. If any of the following does not exist, there was a problem during installation. Please restart the installation How do I tell if my XKLOADER2 is working? 1. Click Start. 2. Click Run and in the popup window type: devmgmt.msc. 3. Expand Ports (COM & LPT). 4. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers. 3

4 5. XKLOADER is connected and functioning if both of the following instances exist: a. Ports (COM & LPT) CP210x USB to UART Bridge Controller (COM). b. Universal Serial Bus Controllers CP210x USB Composite Device. Troubleshooting your system XpressVIP4.2 fails to install 1. You must first ensure it is not already installed by referring to the How do I tell if XpressVIP4.2 is fully installed? section. If it is not, go to step Verify your internet settings allow you to install XpressVIP4.2: a. Open Internet Explorer. b. Click Tools in the menu. c. Click Internet Options. d. Click the Security Tab. e. Select the Internet zone and click Custom level. 4

5 Revision: 4, 28-Oct-10 f. Scroll down to ActiveX controls and plug-ins and change the settings: Click Prompt for Download signed ActiveX controls. 3. Do you have access to install software? If not please contact your Information Technology (IT) support team. 4. For Windows 7 and Windows Vista, the installation stops and disappears mid-way through. To fix this: a. Click the XpressVIP4.2 installation link. b. Click the Save button to save the XpressVIP4.2.exe file to your desktop. c. Close the web site. d. Right-click the file you saved and from the contextual menu, select Run as Administrator. e. See the Installation Instructions. XpressVIP4.2 is installed but the installation link is still visible on the web site 1. You must first ensure it is not already installed by referring to the How do I tell if XpressVIP4.2 is fully installed? section. If it is not, go to step I did not see any confirmation add-on popup window or yellow bar after the installation. Solution: a. Close the web site. b. Disconnect the XKLOADER2. c. Restart the computer. d. Connect the XKLOADER2 (a popup should show the XKLOADER is detected and ready to use). e. Open f. A yellow bar asking if you want to allow the add-on should appear (see next step). 3. A yellow bar pops up in Internet Explorer saying This website wants to run the following add-on: 'Control name is not available' from Unknown Publisher. Solution: Right-click the yellow bar and click Run or Allow. 4. I did not see any confirmation add-on popup window or yellow bar after the installation after steps 1 and 2. a. Open Internet Explorer. b. Click Tools in the menu. c. Click Internet Options. d. Click the Security Tab. 5

6 e. Select the Internet zone and click Custom level. f. Scroll down to ActiveX controls and plug-ins and change the settings: Enable: Allow previously unused ActiveX controls to run without permission Enable: automatic prompting for ActiveX controls Enable: run ActiveX controls and plug-ins g. Click OK to accept the settings. h. Close and reopen the web site. XpressVIP4.2 does not detect my module when the XKLOADER is detected 1. You must first ensure the detection of the XKLOADER by referring to the How do I tell if my XKLOADER2 is working? section. If it is not, go to step I am using Windows Vista or Windows 7: Close the web site and right-click the internet explorer icon to click on Run as Administrator. 3. I have more than 1 XKLOADER connected: Disconnect other XKLOADER devices and leave just one connected. 4. I have an XKLOADER1 connected: XKLOADER1 will work with XK01-09, but may not work with the newer kit models CANMAX400, DBALL, and CANMAX I have an OPTIMAX product connected: The XpressKit4.2 website will not be able to detect OPTIMAX products. To detect them, open and click on the link indicated in To flash OPTIMAX products click HERE. 6

7 Revision: 4, 28-Oct-10 Other issues I get the error: Error reading the XKLOADER configuration. System.NullReferenceException. Solution: Connect the XKLOADER2 USB wire and the error will stop. The search year/make/model drop-down boxes are empty: 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Click Tools in the menu. 3. Click Internet Options. 4. Click the Security tab. 5. Select Internet (world icon). 6. Click the Custom Level button. 7. Scroll to Scripting/Active scripting. a. If it is disabled, enable it by clicking on the corresponding radio button and go to step 15. b. If it was already enabled, go to step Close the Security Settings window. 9. Select Trusted Sites. 7

8 10. Click the Sites button. 11. Confirm that is in the trusted web site list. If it is, go to step 12; otherwise, contact Technical Support. 12. Close the Trusted sites window (do not add to the trusted list or change anything else). 13. Click the Custom level button. 14. Scroll to Scripting/Active scripting. If the option is disabled, enable it by clicking on the corresponding radio button. 15. Close web site and reopen See if the drop-down menu lists contain options.
