Instructional Technology Services D2L Brightspace Faculty Help Topic: Copy Course Materials Overview Use the following steps to copy all or portions of your course materials between courses. This procedure is referred to in D2L Brightspace as Copy Components. This process includes copying content from your development course or a previous semester into a new course shell. Copying Course Materials You have two options for accessing the Copy Components process. You can choose to access it from the Content page or from COURSE ADMIN. Both options are given below. Before you begin From the My Home page, open the course that you want to copy the components into. Then proceed to one of the options below. Option 1: From the Content Page 1. Click Materials + Content. 2. Click Table of Contents from the left menu. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 1 Last Modified: 9/26/16
3. Click Import Course to open the drop-down menu. 4. Click Copy Existing Course to copy from your development course or one taught in a previous semester. Note: You would use the Import Course Package option to import a course that is set up in a zip file or course cartridge (e.g., a course backup or from a textbook publisher). The Import/Export/Copy Components window appears. 5. Go to the section titled Select the Course to Copy below. Option 2: From COURSE ADMIN 1. Click COURSE ADMIN from the course navigation bar. 2. Click Import/Export/Copy Components. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 2 Last Modified: 9/26/16
The Import/Export/Copy Components window appears. 3. Go to the section titled Select the Course to Copy below. Select the Course to Copy 1. Select Copy Components from Another Course. 2. Click Search for offering to select the course to be copied. 3. From the Select Course Offering window, enter the course name and number (e.g. HIST 122). 4. Press Enter or click the search icon to perform the search. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 3 Last Modified: 9/26/16
Note: You can leave the Search For field empty and click the search icon to display a list of all your courses. A list of courses that match your search criteria will appear. 5. Select the course to be copied. Components from this course will be copied to the current course (e.g., HIST 122 from Spring 2014 to your current course). Note: If the course is not listed, refine your search and try again. 6. Click Add Selected. The selected course will be listed under the heading Course to Copy. 7. Go to the next section titled Copy All Components or Select Components. Copy All Components or Select Components You have the following choices for copying your course components: Copy All Components. As the name implies, this option will copy ALL course components from the selected course into the current course. Select Components. Choose this option if you wish to copy only a subset of components or items to the course (e.g., only the Welcome news item, a subset of course files, Quiz 1 and 2 out of a possible seven quizzes, etc.). This option provides the most control over what gets copied to your new course. 1. Click Copy All Components OR-- Select Components. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 4 Last Modified: 9/26/16
2. Use the link below depending on which option you choose: Option 1: Copy All Components Option 2: Select Components Option 1: Copy All Components 1. If you chose Copy All Components, wait until the wait for processing bar indicates the process has completed. Once the Copy is complete, a Copy Completed message and a green checkmark displays. The copy process is complete. 2. Go to the section below titled Next Steps. Option 2: Select Components 1. If you chose Select Components, select the components that you want to copy from the previously selected course. To do this, select the check box next to the individual course component. Note: Select the Select All Components check box to choose all components. You can then deselect those components that should not be copied. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 5 Last Modified: 9/26/16
Important Notes: Be sure to leave the Include associated files check box selected. This will reduce the possibility of broken links. If you have not set up small groups in the Groups tool, we suggest deselecting Groups from the list (i.e., removing the check mark). That way you avoid copying the course ID from subsequent semesters. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 6 Last Modified: 9/26/16
2. Once you have selected the components to copy, click Continue. 3. Confirm the list of components to copy. NOTE: If you need to make changes to the components you selected to copy, click Go Back to return to the previous page. 4. Click Finish to begin copying the components. Once the copying process is complete, a Copy Summary list will appear. A green checkmark should show up next to the components, which means they were successfully copied. Go to the section below titled Next Steps. Next Steps Change all Start and End dates as necessary. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 7 Last Modified: 9/26/16
Test all Content links to make sure you have successfully copied the course files located in your Manage Files folder. Update News items. Delete or expire any News items that you copied from a previous semester. Note: Dismissing News items hides them from your view, not from your students. For More Information Please contact Instructional Technology Services at support@mnstate.edu or if you have questions about this material. ITS D2L Brightspace Page 8 Last Modified: 9/26/16
For first time users, there will be a welcome message set up to help you get started.
