Hello Canvas Admins, This document is designed to help you identify how course permissions affect users' access to Canvas features. To keep things simple, the permissions are listed in alphabetical order, matching the Canvas UI. Each permission is broken down into three sections: what it does, features affected, and related information (if any). Things to keep in mind when working with permissions: You cannot change a permission that has a transparent checkmark or X without a button. These are permissions that are locked by default and cannot be modified by anyone. When you change a permission, it can sometimes take 30 minutes or longer for that permission to take effect. If the expected changes do not appear immediately, try again after some time has passed. Enabling a permission doesn't take effect as quickly as disabling a permission. 2 Account Permissions Add/remove other admins for the account Allows user to add and remove other account admins. Account Settings (Admins tab) Become other users Allows user to masquerade as other users in the account. Users Not available at the sub account level. Import and manage SIS data Determines visibility and management of SIS Import tab in account navigation. Allows user to import and manage SIS data. 3 Manage (add / edit / delete) courses Account Role Permissions Allows user to add new courses to the account. Allows user to access Student View, Reset Course Content, Permanently Delete Course, Copy this Course in Course Settings. Allows user to edit Course Details in Course Settings. Courses, Course Settings View the list of courses must be enabled to manage courses. You can still add a new course via Settings Add a New Course button. Manage account level settings Allows user to view and manage Sub Accounts, Terms, and Authentication for the root account. Allows user to view and manage Settings, Notifications, and Apps tabs in account settings. Settings, Sub Accounts, Terms, Authentication Manage global announcements Allows user to add and delete global announcements at the root account level. Global announcements are a way for you to post sticky messages on the dashboard of all users in your account. Account Settings Not available at the sub account level. 4 Manage permissions Account Role Permissions Allows user to view and manage Permissions. Permissions Manage storage quotas Allows user to view and manage storage Quotas tab in account settings. User can set default course, user, and group storage quotas. Account Settings (Quotas tab) Modify login details for users Allows user to modify login information for a user. Allows user to add new users to the account, delete from account, and merge user. Allows user to generate login/logout activity report in Admin Tools. Users, Admin Tools (Logging tab) See list of users must be enabled to modify login details for users. You can still add a new user to the account via Settings Add a New User button. If Modify login details for users or View statistics is enabled, a user will be able to generate login/logout activity in Admin Tools. 5 Read SIS data Governs account related SIS ID (i.e., sub account SIS ID) View statistics Allows admin user to view account statistics. Allows user to generate login/logout activity report in Admin Tools. Statistics, Admin Tools (Logging tab) If View statistics or Modify login details for users is enabled, a user will be able to generate login/logout activity in Admin Tools. To hide the login/logout activity option in Admin Tools, both of these permissions need to be disabled. View the list of courses Allows user to see the list of courses in the account. 6 Admin Tools Undelete courses Allows user to view and restore deleted courses in the account. Admin Tools (Restore Courses tab) View course change logs Determines visibility of the Course Activity option in the Admin Tools Logging tab. Allows user to view course activity information for the account. Admin Tools (Logging tab) View grade change logs Determines visibility of the Grade Change Activity option in the Admin Tools Logging tab. 7 View notifications Determines visibility of the View Notifications tab in Admin Tools. Allows user to view notifications that were sent out to a user. Admin Tools (View Notifications tab) See the list of users must also be enabled to search and view notifications for a user. Course and Account Permissions Add, edit, and delete events on the course calendar Allows user to add, edit, and delete events on the course calendar. Regardless of whether this permission is enabled or disabled, the user will still be able to manage events on their personal calendar. Calendar To create appointments on the calendar, Scheduler must be enabled for your account. Add/remove other teachers, designers, observers, or TAs to the course Allows user (with the exception of students and observers) to add/remove other teachers, designers, observers, or TAs to the course. 8 People Regardless of whether this permission is enabled or disabled, a user (with the exception of students and observers) enrolled in a course will (by default) be able to add observers to the course. Add/remove students for the course Allows user to add and remove student enrollments. Allows user to view student login/sis id information. People, Grades If Add/remove students for the course is disabled and Manage course sections is disabled, user will still be able to remove user from a course in the Sections tab in Course Settings. To prevent user from changing enrollments in the Settings tab, Add/remove other teachers, designers, observers, or TAs to the course must also be disabled. Change course state Allows user to publish and conclude courses. Publish Course Conclude Course (Course Settings) This permission may function differently based on user role (e.g., TA with this permission enabled will not be able to delete course, copy course, or reset course content. Whereas, a teacher with this permission enabled does have the ability to delete course, copy course, and reset course content.) 9 Create and edit assessing rubrics Account Role Permissions Allows user to create and edit rubrics. Rubrics Create student collaborations Allows user to create collaborations. User can only view/edit/delete collaborations they created. Collaborations To allow view/edit/delete functionality of collaborations created by other users, Manage all other course content must also be enabled. If Manage all other course content is enabled and Create student collaborations is disabled, user will not be able to create new collaborations but will be able to view/edit/delete all collaborations. Create web conferences Allows user to create new conferences. User can only start conferences they created. Conferences To allow edit/delete functionality of user created conferences or to start/edit/delete conferences created by other users, Manage all other course content must also be enabled. 10 If Manage all other course content is enabled and Create web conferences is disabled, user can still manage conferences. Edit grades Determines visibility and management of the Grading Schemes and Question Banks tabs in the account navigation. Allows user to add, edit, and update grades in the Gradebook and in SpeedGrader. Allows user to moderate a quiz. Allows user to view student specific data in Analytics. Gradebook, Analytics, Assignments, SpeedGrader Gradebook and SpeedGrader will be inaccessible if both Edit grades and View all grades are disabled. To view student analytics, View all grades or Edit grades must enabled. View analytics pages must also be enabled. Enable or disable features at the account level Allows user to manage Feature Options in Account Settings. Account Settings (Feature Options tab) Manage (add / edit / delete) assignments and quizzes Allows user to add, edit, delete, and publish/unpublish assignments and quizzes. 11 Allows user to manage assignment settings. Assignments, Quizzes, Rubrics Disabling this permission will override (if enabled) the Create and edit assessing rubrics permission, preventing user from creating or editing rubrics from an individual assignment. However, if Manage learning outcomes is enabled, user can still add rubrics via Outcomes Manage Rubrics. Manage (add / edit / delete) course files Allows user to add, edit, and delete course files and folders. Allows user to download files into zip a file, import a zip file, and lock/unlock files. Course Files If disabled, user can still view and download files into a zip file. Manage (add / edit / delete) course sections Allows user to add, edit, and delete course sections. Allows user to cross list sections. Course Settings (Sections tab) Manage (add / edit / delete) groups Allows user to view and manage (create/edit/delete) student groups. 12 Allows user to view group pages of all student groups. People, Groups If disabled, user cannot create a new group set (category) when creating a group assignment (Canvas will generate an error message), but user can still choose from any pre existing groups. Manage alerts Allows user to configure alerts in course settings. Alerts are a seldom used feature designed to send an alert to students, teachers or admins for specified triggers (e.g., no student/teacher interaction for 7 days). They are checked every day, and notifications will be sent to the student and/or the teacher until the triggering problem is resolved. Course Settings This is an account setting that must be turned on by your Customer Success Manager. Manage all other course content Allows user to manage modules (create, add items, edit module settings, publish/unpublish, etc). Allows teacher/designer/ta based roles to access Chat. Allows user to view Choose Home Page and Course Setup Checklists links on the Home page. Modules, Collaborations, Conferences, Chat, Home Page The Chat tool must be enabled by your Customer Success Manager. Canvas by Instructure 2014 guides.instructure.com updated 08/15/14 Page 12

13 Manage faculty journal entries Account Role Permissions Allows user to create new entries in a faculty journal. People This is an account setting that must be turned on by your Customer Success Manager. Manage learning outcomes Determines visibility and management of Outcomes and Rubrics tabs in the account navigation. Allows user to create, edit, and delete outcomes and outcome groups at the course level. Allows user to manage rubrics. Outcomes, Rubrics If disabled, Outcomes page becomes read only and hides the Manage Rubrics button. User can still access individual assignment rubrics through Assignments. Manage wiki (add / edit / delete pages) Allows user to create, edit, delete, and publish/unpublish pages. Allows user to view page history and set front page. 14 Moderate discussions (delete / edit other s posts, lock topics) Allows user to close for comments, move, pin/unpin, edit, and delete discussion topics created by other users. User can also publish/unpublish discussions. Discussions Post to discussions Allows user to reply to a discussion post. Discussions, Announcements To prevent user from creating discussions and announcements, both Post to discussions and Moderate discussions (delete / edit other s posts, lock topics) must be disabled. See the list of users Allows user to view list of users in the account and in a course. Allows user to masquerade/become other users. 15 Send messages to individual course members Account Role Permissions When composing a new message, user can choose to send messages to individual course members. Conversations When disabled, students can still send individual messages to course teachers and TAs. Send messages to the entire class When composing a new message, user can choose to send a message to All in [course name]. Conversations View all grades Allows user to view Gradebook. Allows user to view student specific data in Analytics. Gradebook, SpeedGrader, Modules, Analytics If both Edit grades and View all grades are disabled, Gradebook and SpeedGrader will be hidden from the course navigation. To view student analytics, View all grades or Edit grades must enabled in addition to View analytics pages. To view module progression, View all grades must be enabled. 16 View all students submissions and make comments on them Allows user to view all student assignment submissions and make comments on them. Assignments, Gradebook View all grades must also be enabled to access assignment submissions through the Gradebook. Edit grades needs to be enabled to access SpeedGrader and assignment submissions through Assignments. View analytics pages Allows user to view account analytics. Allows user to view course and student analytics through course dashboard and people page. Analytics Profiles must be disabled in your account to see the analytics link in the user sidebar from the People page. View and link to question banks Allows user to view and link questions in a quiz to account level question banks. If disabled, user will only be able to view and link to course question banks. Quizzes, Question Banks This permission does not affect ability to manage course level question banks in Quizzes. Instead, Manage Question Banks is dependent on the Manage (add / edit / delete) assignments and quizzes permission. Canvas by Instructure 2014 guides.instructure.com updated 08/15/14 Page 16

17 View course content Account Role Permissions Allows user to view course content. Courses If disabled, user will only have access to Course Settings. View discussions Allows user to view course discussions. Designed primarily for controlling the Observer role. Discussions To completely hide the Discussions link in the course navigation, both Post to discussions and Moderate discussions (delete / edit other s posts, lock topics) must also be disabled. View the group pages of all student groups Allows user to view the group home pages of all student groups. People, Groups Manage (add / edit / delete) groups must be enabled to see group pages. To prevent user from viewing group pages, both View the group pages of all student groups and Manage (add / edit / delete) groups must both be disabled.
