12 Introduction Overview EMC Smarts Report Manager enables network administrators to produce and display or print network operations and management reports through Business Objects software. Report Manager is supplied with the following products: Business Object XI for Windows or UNIX The main product, which provides reporting functionality and a collection of pre-defined reports. Crystal Reports XI Professional Edition Allows you to create custom reports. Report Manager is deployed with the EMC Smarts SQL Data Interface Adapter (SDI Adapter), a third-party database installation (Oracle or Microsoft SQL), and an ODBC driver. Together, these products provide access to the source notification and report data. The EMC Smarts SQL Data Interface Adapter User s Guide provides detailed information. 1-2

13 Introduction Report Manager deployment components Table 1-1 lists the components of a Report Manager deployment, which includes both Smarts and third-party products. Selects notification records and device records, and inserts summary records in the EMC Smarts Schema. Collects device information from Service Assurance Manager, stores the information in the database, and periodically updates the device information. The stored information allows the Summary Adapter to include devices that have no associated notifications. The schema defines the tables, columns and fields of the database. This schema is specific to EMC Smarts Service Assurance Manager. 15 Introduction Report Manager work flow EMC Smarts applications, such as the IP Availability Manager, send topology and notifications to the Global Manager. The Global Manager sends notifications associated with a specified Notification List to the SDI Adapter. The SQL Data Interface Adapter uses the ODBC API to insert and update notification records in the customer-defined database server that uses a Smarts database schema specially designed for notifications. In addition, the Adapter pulls topological information from the repository of the Global Manager. Users at the EMC Smarts Global Console invoke Report Tools to launch Business Objects XI. This initiates a query to the Smarts database schema which, in turn, extracts notification information from the database, and produces reports. The reports are distributed by way of HTTP servers to end-user web browsers. Report Manager includes pre-defined report files (in Crystal format) that can be used to display or print a wide variety of operations and management reports. The reports are listed and described in Business Objects XI Reports on page 5-1. Figure 1-1 shows the Report Manager work flow. Report Manager work flow 1-5

19 2 Setting Up the Reports Manager Deployment This chapter describes set up for the Report Manager deployment. It contains the following information: Prerequisites Summary of deployment tasks Setting up report tools functionality Setting Up the Reports Manager Deployment 2-1

20 Setting Up the Reports Manager Deployment Prerequisites For a Report Manager deployment, the following third-party and EMC Smarts software should be installed: Required third-party software Business Objects XI for Microsoft Windows or UNIX, and Crystal Reports XI (these products are supplied by EMC Corporation on separate CD-ROMs) Database server (part of the Business Objects XI installation used to store information about the system and its users). The supported databases for Business Objects XI are Microsoft SQL, Oracle, DB2, and Sybase. Additional information about the database server on page 2-2 provides additional information. Note: On Windows, by default, the Business Objects XI setup program installs and configures its own Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) database, if necessary. If you use the default MSDE database, you do not need to install your own database. Refer to the Business Objects XI supported platforms documentation. HTTP server (part of the Business Objects XI installation; used to make reports available through a web browser) Note: The Apache Tomcat software supplied with the EMC Smarts Business Dashboard and EMC Smarts Web Console does not support the Business Objects XI installation. For detailed requirements and installation information, see the Business Objects XI user documentation. Additional information about the database server The following are important recommendations for implementing the database server: Use this database for Business Objects XI only. It should not contain other tables. EMC Corporation recommends that you name the new database CEcms. Create a new user account named crystal, and assign that user account a secure password. Ensure that the new account has permission to create, modify, and delete tables so that Business Objects XI can modify the CEcms database as required. Ensure that your database server is set up to use Unicode character encoding (such as UTF-8). Required EMC Smarts software Report Manager. EMC Smarts SQL Data Interface Adapter. For installation information including detailed requirements, see the EMC Smarts SAM Adapters Suite and Report Manager Installation Guide. Note: The SDI Adapter installation requires additional software, including a database and ODBC driver. For installation information including detailed requirements, see the EMC Smarts SAM Adapters Suite and Report Manager Installation Guide. 2-2
