Bellwork Find the absolute value for each point a 4 b 0 2 c 6 1) a = 2) b = 3) c = 1
How many of you have ever been to a concert or a sports event where you had a ticket. Let's talk about what was on the ticket... 2
Can you think of a time when you had to locate a point by moving along and up a grid? Make a graph Finding something on a map Crossword Puzzle Others... 3
Hand out Student Notes 4
We use ordered pairs to graph a coordinate plane. 5
Here's the Rule To graph an ordered pair, move along the x axis until you reach the number. Then move up the y axis until you reach the number. Draw the point at the intersection of the two lines. 6
y axis (0,0) origin x axis 7
One more time... If an x coordinate is + move to the right of the origin (horizontal) If a y coordinate is + move up from the origin (vertical) But which one is the x, and which one is the y? 8
The x is the 1st Number Go left or right The y is the 2nd Number Go up or down X comes BEFORE Y 9
When you walk into the mall or a hotel, you walk IN before you go UP and DOWN 10
(3,2) means 3 to the right (horizontal) 2 up (vertical) (2,3) means 2 to the right 3 up 11
To the right of what? y axis Up from what? 0,0 x axis (0,0) is called the origin It is the starting point 12
Your turn to show me you understand ordered pairs Who is in the seat that I call out? is sitting at the origin. So who is sitting at... 13
Use the ordered pairs to identify the points. Then use the magnifying glass to reveal the answers. y axis 1. (5,2) 2. (4,0) I K 3. (8,3) 4. (1,7) L M 5. (3,8) 6. (5,5) J N M 1 J N I K L x axis 8 14
Open up and write in your notebook: Coordinates define a point's unique location. Can a point be represented by more that one ordered pair? Why or why not? 15
Guided Practice 16
1 What is the location of P, as an ordered pair? Multiple choice A (11,11) B (10,10) y O Q P S C (10,11) M R N D (11,10) x 17
2 On this graph, which point is found at (18,5)? Multiple choice A B C S N Q y O M Q P R S N D M x 18
3 What is the location of O, as an ordered pair? Multiple choice A (17,4) B (5,17) C (17,5) y O M Q P R S N D (4,17) x 19
4 What are the coordinates of point R, if it is moved 3 units right and 2 units up? Multiple choice A (14,8) B (13,10) C (13,8) D (14,11) y O Q S P M R N x 20
5 What are the coordinates of point S, if it is moved 4 units left and 1 unit down? Multiple choice y A (12,14) B (11,15) O Q P S C (11,14) M R N D (19,14) x 21
6 Where is the point R located? Multiple choice A (18,18) 19 y 17 R B (17,17) Q C (17,16) D (16,16) P x 22
IP 23
Closure Look at these ordered pairs: (0,4), (2,4), (6,4) What shape would these three points make? Pull 24
