2 Teacher Directions Common Core Standards: 5.G.4 Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties. How to use this resource: Use this project as an assessment tool to see how well your students are able to classify quadrilaterals based on their properties. Included is a student directions page and a grading rubric. These are just a guide and you can feel free to modify the directions for your particular class. I suggest having them create their final draft on a lightly printed graph paper that has very small lines. This helps them to keep the lines of their objects straight. Here is an example of what the project may look like: design page design key

3 Name: Date: Calling All Designers!!! Hello all of you fabulous designers! I have a special project for you! You are going to use your knowledge of quadrilaterals and design skills to create a drawing of a space of your choice. It has to be a place. (Imagine a blueprint) You may design a store, room, athletic field or stadium, classroom, house, neighborhood, etc. Be as creative as possible! Here are the requirements: You must include at least one of each of the following quadrilaterals: parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, rhombus, square. (You will most likely have many of each, but one is the minimum) Your final draft should be a NEAT drawing, completely colored, all shapes outlined in black colored pencil, and drawn using a ruler for all shapes and objects. You must also have a separate piece of paper that includes a KEY to your drawing. Your key will contain the names of the quadrilaterals above, a list of their attributes, and then the symbols of the shapes from your picture that fit into that quadrilateral s properties. With the picture, you should provide what the symbol represents. For example: whatever object you use on your paper as a square should be drawn under the square s attributes along with the name of the object. If the square in your drawing is a desk in a classroom, you must draw it and write desk next to this. You must do this for EVERY object in the design. Remember, you are allowed to draw more than one of each quadrilateral, but you must have at least one of each of them. Good luck and I can t wait to see your designs! Due Date:

4 Quadrilaterals 0 or 1 of the quadrilaterals 2 or 3 of the quadrilaterals 4 of the quadrilaterals are present in the project. All 5 quadrilaterals are present in the project. Key The key is missing several of the quadrilaterals or the attributes. The key is missing most of the quadrilaterals from the design. The key includes some of the quadrilaterals and may be missing some properties. Some of the quadrilaterals are included in the key. The key may be missing one quadrilateral and/or properties. Not all the quadrilaterals are included in the key. The key contains all 5 quadrilaterals and their properties. All quads are included in the key. Directions Followed None of the directions have been followed. Some of the directions Most of the directions All directions have been followed. Creativity The design is bland, has a lot of blank space, and limited color. The design is somewhat creative. It may lack color, use of space, etc. The design is mostly creative. Adequate use of space, color, etc. The design is highly creative. It has great use of space, colorful, etc. Neatness The design was not created with straight rulers, shapes are not outlined and colored in neatly, and there are stray marks that have not been clearly erased.. The design was sometimes created with straight rulers, shapes are not all neatly, and there are stray marks present.. mostly with straight rulers, shapes are mostly neatly, and there may be some stray marks. with straight rulers, shapes are outlined and colored in neatly, and all stray marks are erased clearly Quadrilaterals 0 or 1 of the quadrilaterals 2 or 3 of the quadrilaterals 4 of the quadrilaterals are present in the project.
