1 TUTORIAL C-29B: REVIT - ENTOURAGE & MATERIALS This Tutorial explains how to insert Entourage Elements such as Revit People and Trains; as well as, how to apply materials to all the various Revit components in the Project and Family Environments. 2 To complete this scene prior to rendering the view, a few additional elements need to be added such as people and a train. Revit comes with Entourage Family Elements which are components that complete a scene. These components are people, cars, trucks, laptops, etc. Revit s Entourage Elements are limited; therefore, we need methods for inserting our own entourage elements. The next slides will insert people into the scene and a train from a different file format.

3 2) Under the Insert tab, select Load Family 1) Switch into a plan view.

4 1) Double left-click into the family folder called Entourage

5 1) Left-click on the file called RPC Male and then hold in the CTRL key on the keyboard and select RPC Female. 2) Then click OPEN

6 Click the Home tab and then the Component tool icon. Then click on the down arrow under Properties. You ll notice that the RPC Male and RPC Female have multiple names to choose from. This will place different rendering types to your seen.

7 The Entourage People look just like the trees when viewed in the Revit Model. They are (2) 2D Planes that crisscross at the center. When you render this view, the trees and the people will not look like this; they will look real.

8 2) Click the button for the name next to Render Appearance. This will show you like with trees, what this person will look like when rendered. 1) First select a person on your screen and then click Edit Type Note: You can do the same thing with vegetation (trees and bushes).

9 Select the View tab and click the Render icon. Use the settings shown here for the results of the next slide.

10 You will notice that all of the people in this scene are facing the wrong way. In the plan view you may have to rotate the people to get the scene correct. See the next slides on how to know which way the people will face.

11 In plan, the pointed end of the person diagram indicates the direction that they are facing. Select the people and rotate them the way you d prefer to see them face in the rendering.

13 Now the people look like they are waiting for a train. The next slides will show how to get a train on the tracks. This person, Cynthia, needs a seat!

14 To change the materials of floors, first tab over the floor, left-click on it, and then click Edit Type

15 Click Edit Type to add a new material. In the next slide, we will add brick pavers. Click Duplicate to make a new floor. The reason that I am doing this is that I have placed this floor type at least 17 times. If I change the properties of this floor without duplicating it, I will change all of the floors. In this instance, I only want this Level 5 Floor to have the finishes that get applied in the next slides. Give it a unique name (I added Level 5 after the original name).

16 Click Insert

17 While the newly added row is selected, click the Up button until this row is on Top.

18 1) Click in the <By Category> space and click the button that appears. 2) Click a material such as Masonry - Brick 3) Click the Duplicate icon to make a new material.

19 Create a new unique name for the material.

20 Give the material a thickness. Select the Appearance tab. Then select a material such as in the Sitework section and Cobble Stone - Glazed Multicolor Click all the OK buttons to eventually get back to your scene.

21 The scene should start to change. The next slide will show the scene rendered with the new material.

22 The scene rendered. The next slides will showcase applying materials to the train tracks, the railings, and the complex form canopy.

23 To apply materials to the tracks, select the track and then click Edit Type.

24 Click the Edit button next to Rail Structure.

25 With each rail profile, click the Material and <By Category> section of the dialog box. Then select a material such as Metal - Steel.

26 Balusters require a family type material application. In the Project Browser select Railings to expand that category and then right-click on the baluster that is part of the track family. Select Edit.

27 1) Select the Family Types tool icon. 2) Click Add 3) Add a Material parameter with the settings shown in this dialog box. You can make your own name. Type of Parameter should be set to Material and this parameter should be a Type parameter. 4) Press OK and OK to close out the two dialog boxes.

28 2) Click the button next to Material in the Properties dialog box 3) Select the material parameter that was just created. Then press OK 4) Click Load into Project 1) Left-click on the baluster

29 Overwrite the existing version and its parameter values.

30 In the Project Browser scroll back to the baluster related to the railroad track. Expand it and right-click on the text. Choose Type Properties

31 1) Click in the box that says, <By Category> 2) Choose a wood material such as Wood - Cherry 3) In the appearance tab, you can adjust the stain color if preferred.

32 Press OK and OK to close out of the dialog boxes. In the Graphics tab, click the box next to Use Render Appearance for Shading

33 To add materials to other railing types, follow the same steps related to the material application of the railroad track.

34 To add materials to the complex form containing curtain panels and/or adaptive components, click into a floor plan view where you can see the form such as the Site view.

35 1) Tab over the complex form to individually select a curtain panel family. 2) Click Edit Family

36 This curtain panel family is made up of adaptive components; therefore, we need to edit the adaptive component and pass a material parameter to this file. 2) Click Edit Family If your curtain panel family is not made up of adaptive components, the next steps still apply except you would stay in this file. 1) Left-click on an adaptive component

37 1) Click Family Types 2) Add a Material parameter and make sure it is an Instance parameter. 3) Click OK and OK to close the open dialog boxes.

38 2) Click the button in the Material row. 3) Select the material parameter that was just created. 4) Press OK 1) Left-click on the component.

39 1) Click Load into Project 2) If multiple files are open, check the file to load this component into. In this example, we are loading this component into the curtain panel family. 3) Click OK

40 Overwrite the file.

41 Right-click on one of the adaptive components, choose Select All Instances and then In Entire Project.

42 1) Click the button next to the Pipe Material instance parameter. This is the parameter from the adaptive component file that was created on the previous slides. 2) Click Add parameter 3) Give the material parameter a name and make it a Type parameter. Press OK. This makes the instance parameter from the previous file equal to the material parameter in this file.

43 2) Choose the Project File to load the curtain panel family into and press OK. 1) Click Load into Project

44 Overwrite the existing version.

45 Overwrite the existing sub-component version.

46 2) Select Edit Type 1) Tab over in a plan view and select an individual curtain panel family 3) Click in the white space associated with the Pipe Material parameter and press the button that appears.

47 Pick a material. In this example, I have duplicated a Paint material and changed the RGB values for a Yellow color. Press OK on all the open dialog boxes to apply the material.

48 The next slides will show how to insert an Entourage element such as a Train from SketchUp.

49 2) Click New under Families 1) Go to the View tab, click on User Interface and select Recent Files 3) Scroll down and select the Entourage family template

50 While in a plan view, click Import CAD under the Insert tab.

51 1) Browse to the location of the file that you want to import. 2) Select the file type that you want to import. Revit allows the following import CAD file types:.dwg,.dxf,.dgn,.sat,.skp 3) Make the rest of the import setting as shown here. Then click Open.

52 If you need to make any scale adjustments, you can click on the imported object and click Edit Type where you can edit the Scale Factor if necessary. In this example, I am not scaling the train. Save the file and give it a name. Then load it into the project.

53 1) Choose Component under the Home tab. 2) Move the mouse cursor to hover over the train track, hit the space bar to have the train automatically align and rotate to the tracks.

54 The problem with bringing models over from other file types such as from AutoCAD or SketchUp is that materials don t always transfer correctly. It is best to use native Revit elements; however, if you must use other file types, we need to make some adjustments.

55 2) Select Edit Family 1) Click on the train component.

56 Notice the Render Appearance Orb shows Grey instead of a color associated with the RGB value in the material name. Render Material should show up as black. If you click Materials under the Manage tab, you will see that there is a list of materials called Render Material and then followed by some RGB numbers. Since we have already placed this file into the Project Environment file, these materials already exist in that file. The best thing to do is to go back to the Project Environment file and make edits there. If we make edits here and then bring this file back into the Project Environment, Revit won t overwrite the materials.

57 Click Close in the Applications menu under the R icon.

58 1) In the Manage tab select the Materials tool icon. 2) In the Appearance tab in the Materials dialog box, change the color to match the RGB value shown in the title.

59 Match the RGB values shown in the title for each material called Render Material

60 Now the materials come through. This guy might want to step back. Next time, I might want to through in some more entourage objects here to hide the fact that the train at the back is not on the tracks. Remember to click Save to Project after your renderings are complete to be sure they are saved and can be used later.

61 The next slides will show all the other placed to find the Material button associated with Revit Components.

62 Left-click on columns and beams. The material is set in the Properties box.

63 2) Click on Edit Type 1) Left-click on stairs. 3) Apply materials under the Materials and Finishes section of the stair Type Properties dialog box.

64 2) Click on Edit Type 1) Left-click on curtain wall or storefront mullions 3) Apply materials under the Materials and Finishes section of the mullion Type Properties dialog box.

65 Floors, Ceilings, Roofs, and Walls contain materials within the Structure portion of the Type Properties. Click the Edit button and apply materials for the outside layers

66 Most Family Components such as furniture will contain material applications through either the Properties dialog box or within the Edit Type dialog box.
