2 Properties Page 2 of 8 Revit is a database. As such every piece of geometry has data (properties) applied to it. The properties menu functions in two ways. When nothing is selected it shows the properties of the view. When you select something it changes to be the properties of the selection. INSTANCE VS TYPE Revit objects have two types of parameters or properties attached to them: Instance and Type. Instance Parameters only apply to a single instance of an object, thus making a change will not impact the rest of the instances in your model. Type Parameters apply to ALL objects of that TYPE, therefore a change to these parameters impacts all instances within your model. Nearly all parameters may be scheduled. View Properties Modify view parameters, apply view templates etc BIDIRECTIONAL ASSOCIATIVITY Instance Properties A change here only impacts the one instance of your selected object Type Properties Access the type properties by clicking Edit Type. A change here impacts all instances in your model. From Autodesk: Revisions and alterations to information are automatically updated throughout the model. The Revit parametric change engine automatically coordinates changes made anywhere in model views, drawing sheets, schedules, sections, and plans. English: A change in one place is a change everywhere. A simple example - a door number. The number is an instance parameter. If you change it in the properties window it will also update the tag and the schedule. Any view showing the door will update automatically. Should you renumber the door in the schedule or by clicking on the tag later all tags, schedules and instance parameters will update.

3 Ribbon Menus Here are a few of the most popular menus which you will use to model, view and document your projects. Small arrows indicate sub-menus with additional options. If you hover over a particular button Revit will provide you with some information on how to use it. Page 3 of 8 Architecture These are your 3D modeling tools which you will use to create geometry. 3D items are visible in all views. Insert This ribbon allows you to import or link Revit, CAD, images etc. You can also load additional families. Annotate These are all your annotation tools like text, dimensions etc. Annotation elements are view-specific meaning they only exist in one view. View This ribbon allows you to create new views and sheets and modify their graphics. Modify Move/copy etc. It is helpful to memorize keyboard shortcuts for these tools Mirror Pick axis Align Offset Mirror Draw axis Move Copy Rotate Trim/Extend Extra panel appears based on selection

4 Levels and Grids Levels and grids, while appearing to be 2D elements are actually 3D. Think of them as invisible planes. They will show up in Page 4 of 8 any views perpendicular to the plane. It is ideal to set these early in the project, especially levels as they control the position of 3D elements on the Z axis. Your levels will become your floor and ceiling plans. The checkbox indicates visibility of the head The lock indicates that levels or grids are locked to each other. If you stretch one, they will all stretch. To stretch one individually, unlock it. 2D - this is a graphic override If a grid extends above a level it will show in that floor plan 3D - this is the real edge of the level

5 Walls and Doors Start modeling your building using walls. Be sure to select the type first and then set the height prior to drawing. Doors are hosted within walls and as such may only be placed in a wall. Use the modify tools to copy, mirror and move the doors in place. 6 Windows Page 6 of 8 Like doors, windows are hosted within walls and as such may only be placed in a wall. Make sure to check sill height before you place the window. Making a new type In order to make a 4 x8 fixed window we need to create the type since it does not exist. In order to do this you click Edit Type and then Duplicate. Then name the new type and edit its parameters. Stairs When placing a stair set the base level, top level and run width. The default stair will be a code compliant rise and run. You can modify this by editing the type. You can add a stair and landings by component. When complete click the green check mark. Railings will be automatically created.

7 Floors and Roofs For floors and roofs it is important to first set the level and any offsets. Then they can be either sketched or the extents can be set by selecting walls. When complete click the green check mark to exit sketch mode. You will be prompted to have walls attach to the floor or roof. Page 7 of 8 For sloping roofs select edges and click defines slope. Then input slope amount over 12

8 Components Page 8 of 8 For geometry that does not have a command (i.e. walls and doors) you may find it under the components tool. Scroll through the families that have been loaded in your project in the properties window, To load others select the Load Families button. You will be taken to the Imperial Library where you can select additional families to import. Once imported it will be in the list.
