1 Using PowerPoint to Create an Interactive Multimedia Portfolio Ben Johnson Getting Started 1. Launch PowerPoint from the start button. Select the Design Template radio button. Then click on OK. 2. Browse the different templates. Select one you like and then click the OK button. 3. Choose the Title Slide AutoLayout and press the OK button. BEFORE YOU START: Go to the Tools menu and select Customize. Then click on the Options tab. Remove the check marks from the two boxes shown below. Changing these settings will allow you to follow this tutorial
2 4. Click inside the dotted place holders to add text to the title slide. Adding Action Buttons 5. Add an action button to the title slide. Click on the AutoShapes button. Then select Action Buttons. Choose the forward button. Your cursor will turn into a crosshair. Use the crosshair to draw your button at the bottom of the slide. 6. Hyperlink to next slide should be selected by default. Click on the OK button. Size and place the button on the slide. 7. Add text to the button by clicking on the text box button. Then click inside the button and type Enter. 8. Your finished button should look like this. 9. Add a new slide by clicking on the new slide button. 10. Select the title only slide. Type: Table of contents in the title place holder. 2
3 11. Now add six blank action buttons to the slide. Click on the Autoshapes button and select action button. Pick the blank action button. Use the crosshair to draw the action button as shown on the finished product handout. 12. Don t worry about the action settings yet. We will add them after we have finished adding all the slides. Just click on OK to accept the default options. 13. Insert text into the button by clicking on the text button tool. Then click inside the action button and start typing. 14. Size and place the button. Click the button text. You will see diagonal lines around the button. Diagonal lines indicate that you can edit text. 15. Click on the button but not on the text. Dots indicate that you can edit the autoshape. 16. To save time let s copy and paste the button six times. Make sure there are dots around the button. Go to the Edit menu and select copy. 3
4 17. Return to the Edit menu and select paste. Repeat this procedure until you have 6 buttons. 18. Use your cursor to name and arrange the buttons as shown. Note that your cursor will turn into a four way arrow when it is on top of a button. This allows you to move your buttons around. Adding an animation from the WWW 19. Now let s insert an animation. Click on the Insert menu and select picture. Then select Clip Art. 20. Click on the Clips Online button to insert an animation from the WWW. 21. Let s search for education animations. Enter the information shown to the right and then click go. 22. Add the bus animation to your slide by clicking on the red down arrow below the bus. 4
5 23. Next click on the bus and then click on the insert object button. Return to your slide show by locating your slide show button located on the task bar at the bottom of the screen. Position the bus as shown on the example. To see the animation you must go to the Slide Show menu and select View Show. Adding a hand-drawn animation 24. Insert a new slide by clicking on the new slide button. Select the title only slide. 25. Use the autoshapes and draw tools to create the picture shown to the right. 26. Now copy and paste the light bulb. Place the new light bulb on top of the first light bulb. Select the light bulb, then click on the arrow next to the paint bucket to fill the light bulb with yellow paint. Then draw a second closed switch. 27. Select the light bulb and closed switch. To select both objects you must hold down the shift key while you click on both objects. 28. Click on the draw button and then select Group. This will make these two objects into one object. 5
6 29. Go to the slide show menu and select custom animation. 30. Order and Timing (open switch) Check the box next to line 11 or click on the objects until you find the open switch. Make sure that it is 1 st in the animation order. Have it start Automatically in 0 seconds. 31. Effects (open switch) Have the open switch appear and hide the open switch on the next mouse click. 32. Order and Timing (closed switch and light) Select the check box next to group 12. Make sure it is second in the animation order. Have it start on mouse click. 6
7 33. Effects (closed switch and light) Have the closed switch Appear and don t have it dim after the animation. View your slide show to see the finished animation. Adding narration to an individual slide 34. Create a new slide. Select the title only slide. Title it as shown on your finished product handout. Add narration to the slide by going to the Insert menu and selecting Movies and Sounds. Then select Record Sound Name your sound. Then click on the red circle to start recording. NOTE: You must have a sound card and microphone to use this feature. 36. Click on the blue square to stop recording. 37. Now size and place the speaker icon on your slide. 7
8 38. Go to the slide show menu and select custom animation. Change the settings as shown to the right. View the slide show to hear the finished product. Adding Pictures 39. Add a new slide. Go to the insert menu and select Picture. Then select from file. 40. Navigate to the folder or disk that contains your picture. Select the desired picture and then click on the insert button. Use the white handles around the picture to resize it. Use your cursor to move the picture. Adding a movie 41. Add another new slide. Go to the Insert menu and select Movies and Sounds. Then select Movie from File. Navigate to the folder or disk that contains your movie. Select the desired movie. 42. You can choose to have your movie automatically play or you can have it played when you click 8
9 it. View the slide show to watch the movie. Adding Hyperlinks 43. Return to the Table of Contents slide. Select the Teaching Experience button. Make sure the button is selected and not the text. (Dots should appear around the button.) 44. Click on the hyperlink button located on the toolbar. 45. Click on the Hyperlink to: radio button. Select Slide. 46. Select the desired slide then click on OK. Click on the OK button again. 47. Repeat those steps on the remaining buttons. 48. Add buttons to each slide that will take the viewer back to the table of contents. Go to your third slide. Click the AutoShapes button and select Action buttons. Choose the button that looks like a house. 49. Draw the button on the bottom of the slide. Choose the Hyperlink to: Slide. Then choose the Table of Contents slide. Click on the OK button. Copy and paste the new button onto your remaining slides. 9
10 Narrate the entire slide show 50. If you would like you can narrate the entire slide show at once. Click on the Slide Show menu and select Record Narration. 51. Accept the default settings by clicking on OK. 52. Talk into the microphone at each slide to record your voice. After you have narrated all the slides you can save the slide timings with your voice by clicking on Yes. 10
