NU REVIT TUTORIAL Instructor: David Snell, AIA LEED AP BD+C Tutorial 2: Page 1 of 7 Annotations All functions contained in the Annotate tab create 2D view specific elements. These elements will only be visible in the view in which they are created. They can however be copied from view to view if desired. All items and lineweights will scale to the view scale. Therefore 1/8 text prints at 1/8 tall regardless of the scale of the view. Revit handles the size conversion in the background. Text and Dimensions Revit s text interface is very straightforward if you have used other architecture software. Arrows and leader types may be changed on each instance. Arrowheads, fonts and sizes may be changed using Edit Type. For dimensions Revit has built in some additional tools that can make your life easier. First Revit allows you to create dimension strings which can be very useful. The edit witness lines tool allows you to add or subtract dimension segments after you have finished the string. You can make all dimensions in the string equal by clicking the EQ on the string. For critical dimensions you can lock the segment so that it doesn t change. To override dimension segments with text just click on the number. Note - you cannot override a dimension with another number. It must be text. If you wish to change how dimensions are rounded use Edit Type.
Tags Page 2 of 7 Since Revit is a database tagging is one of its strong suits. Tags pull their information from families, often type marks or instance numbers. For this reason modifying a tag can impact the properties of an object. Tags can be added to a view using the Tag by Category tool which will show the available tags for any geometry if they are loaded. Once very nice feature is called Tag All Not Tagged which will tag all of the items in a category at once. This can save a lot of time! Window tag is pulling from the parameter called Type Mark Using the Tag All tool tags will propagate on the exterior face of the windows Hold control to click multiple categories Door Tags will automatically center on the door threshold Detail Lines If you need to add detail to a view using just linework the Detail Lines tool is the best way. This way you create view specific linework instead of the 3D lines you may create with the model line tool. For detail lines just select the type of line from the Line Style pull down and use the various Draw tools to create what you need. This tool is heavily used when you are drawing details in Revit.
Filled and Masking Regions A Filled Region is a hatch. You sketch boundary lines (you can set their line style, including invisible) and select a pattern very similar to the way you would in AutoCAD. Revit allows you to control whether the region is transparent or opaque in the Edit Type properties. A Masking Region is essentially a solid white filled region. It is used to obscure parts of your model. Page 3 of 7 Detail Components/Repeating Details Revit has a library of 2D content called detail components. These are a unique feature which allows for fast detailing of a building. By default not many are loaded into the template but they can be loaded in from the Imperial Library. Detail Components have two types: standalone and line based. A standalone component could be something like a wide flange section (as seen to the right). A line based component could be a piece of drywall. Repeating details take a standalone detail component and repeat it on a line based on parameters of spacing and rotation that you input. A repeating section of brick is a great example of the intent of this tool.
Schedules Page 4 of 7 As a database, schedules are a powerful part of Revit. Nearly anything that you have modeled can be scheduled and Revit allows you to choose the data you wish to display. Common schedules in a project will be a door schedule, window schedule, furniture schedule, room area schedules etc. First click Create Schedule. Then select the type of schedule (category) from the list. Select Fields: These will be the columns of the schedule and represent all available parameters from the category that you can schedule. Click Add to include the fields in your schedule and reorganize the list as needed. Filter: Save this for later. This allows you to filter the overall schedule to show specific data sets. Sorting/Grouping: Choose which field will organize the schedule. Add headers/footers as needed. Grand Totals and Itemize Every Instance are options to customize the schedule. Formatting: Control how the text is adjusted in the schedule. You can select calculate totals for numeric fields for footers. Appearance: Control how the schedule looks (Revit s defaults are usually fine). Embedded Schedule: Allows you to embed other types of schedule within your schedule. For example schedule which doors are in which room within your room schedule.
Graphic Controls Revit has a variety of ways to control the graphics in any view. In general you can control lineweights, patterns, color, transparency, halftoning etc. The primary tool to edit this by category is called Visibility/Graphics which is accessed by hitting VG. In VG you can control which categories are displayed (using the checkboxes), graphic overrides for line weights/colors/ styles, pattern overrides, detail levels and whether a category is halftoned. Page 5 of 7 For individual overrides per object, select the object, right mouse click and select override graphics in view by element. You can hide elements using the same method. To override the line style of a single line of modeled geometry use the Linework tool under the Modify tab. It looks like this: Reveal any elements or categories you have hidden in a view by clicking the lightbulb in the View Control bar
Color Fills In order to get color on your floor plans and sections one easy way is to use color fills. These rely on rooms so first make sure you have added those to your model and properly named them. Select Color Scheme from the View Properties window. Specify Rooms from the drop down and then select Name. All of the room names from your model will show up in the list and you can control the colors and the pattern. Page 6 of 7 View Templates Once you have spent time getting your view to look right you don t want to do it again right? View templates allow you to save all the properties of one view in order to apply it to others. To create a view template right mouse click your view name from the project browser and select Create View Template from View. Then confirm all of the settings and save it. To apply it to another view set it from the View Properties window.
Graphic Display Options Page 7 of 7 For rendered elevations the Graphic Display Options can be a useful tool. First choose whether the view will be realistic, shaded or consistent colors. Then use the Graphic Display Options to control lighting conditions, shadows, backgrounds etc. Renderings From a 3D view access the rendering dialogue from the View Control bar. Choose your settings and hit render. Make sure to match your sun settings to the sun settings of the view that you set from Graphic Display Options so there aren t any surprises!
