2 Course Aims and Learning Outcomes 1. Introduction Course Aims This course aims at equipping senior secondary students with the foundation knowledge and practical skills in manipulating different media so as to enable them to apply in the design and production of multimedia entertainment products. These products include computer games, computer animations and audio-visual effects for entertainment. This course will also help students better prepare themselves for further studies and / or career development in the multimedia entertainment industry. To enrich students learning experiences, industrial visits will be arranged to enhance students understanding of the multimedia entertainment industry. A Life Skills Education Day Camp will also be introduced to develop students generic skills, self-confidence, self-esteem, sense of responsibilities, team spirits, and problem-solving skills. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: 1. analyse the profile of the multimedia entertainment industry and appraise the importance of work ethics as well as responsibilities required for the industry; 2. create and manipulate different digital media elements with demonstration of practical skills and creativity; 3. demonstrate their ability in multimedia literacy and critics by developing their own portfolios of studies in various digital media and entertainment products; 4. integrate thinking and people skills in designing and producing a multimedia entertainment product as a production team member; and 5. develop self-understanding for further studies and career development in related fields. 1

4 Modules Modules Core Part Core Modules Module 1: Introduction to Multimedia Entertainment Industry (12 hours) This module enables students to describe the profile and characteristics of the multimedia entertainment industry and appraise the responsibilities and work ethics required in the workplace environment. Major activities: Case studies on the multimedia entertainment industry Discuss and analyse the trends and latest development of the industry Industrial visit(s) and talk(s) by professionals Module 2: Multimedia Entertainment Design Basics (30 hours) This module allows students to create and develop learning portfolios for self-reflection, and demonstrate fundamental skills in visual and sound design by applying relevant principles. Major activities: Learning portfolio documenting experience of multimedia appreciation and critiques for self-reflection and learning Develop visual and sound design concepts Core Part Digital Media Elements Module 3: Digital Photography (24 hours) This module enables students to demonstrate knowledge and techniques of capturing and manipulating digital photographic images using appropriate hardware and software, and apply the skills in arranging digital photographic images to demonstrate creativity and understanding of the principles of media design. 3

5 Modules Module 4: Video Shooting and Editing (24 hours) This module enables students to demonstrate knowledge and techniques of capturing and manipulating digital video using appropriate hardware and software, and apply the skills in arranging digital video to demonstrate creativity and understanding of the principles of media design. Module 5: Audio Recording and Sound Effects (24 hours) This module enables students to demonstrate knowledge and techniques of capturing and manipulating digital audio using appropriate hardware and software, and apply the skills in arranging digital audio to demonstrate creativity and understanding of the principles of media design. Module 6: Motion Graphics and Visual Effects (24 hours) This module enables students to demonstrate knowledge and techniques of capturing and manipulating digital graphics using appropriate hardware and software, and apply the skills in arranging digital graphics to demonstrate creativity and understanding of the principles of media design. Major activities of Modules 4-6: Practical tasks Mini-projects Elective Part Computer Animation Design Stream Module 7: Computer Animation Fundamentals (15 hours) This module enables students to create and develop animation design ideas employing appropriate storytelling, characters and animation principles. Major activities: Discuss and analyse the animation principles, character designs and storyboard of a computer animation Create and develop a set of characters, motions, storyboards and motion designs for a computer animation 4

6 Modules Module 8: Animation Design and Production (30 hours) This module enables students to integrate different media elements with the use of industry-standard animation software to produce a computer animation. Major activities: Character illustration and modeling Key framing with specific tools and equipment Module 9: Animation Production Project (45 hours) This module enables students to originate a project in computer animation and develop the concept to the point where it becomes the basis of a creative and effective production, and apply the skills and knowledge required to collaborate intensively with other production team members. Major activity: Computer animation design project 5

Course Duration: 180 hours (Please refer to the enclosed timetable for the detailed class meeting dates.) Students must attend all lessons. If absence is unavoidable, students make a formal application by completing the Leave Application Form (Appendix A), substantiated with documented proof, to the Course Leader or Tutor concerned as soon as possible. In case of absence on medical grounds, students should inform the Course Tutor beforehand as far as possible and make a formal application for leave with documented proof immediately upon resuming to studies. 11

16 Performance Descriptors of Attained, Further Studies and Employment 8. Performance Descriptors of Attained Students at this level typically: 1. demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of concepts and principles in multimedia entertainment; 2. apply basic concepts and skills of digital media in producing multimedia entertainment products; 3. demonstrate the ability to review and reflect on learning when constructing simple learning portfolios as well as the ability to appreciate and critique multimedia entertainment products; 4. apply information technology skills to collect and identify relevant information, and communicate ideas using appropriate media in the creation of multimedia products; 5. demonstrate basic problem-solving and decision-making skills and propose simple solutions in the design and production of multimedia entertainment products; 6. appreciate the work ethics and responsibilities required for the industry; and 7. demonstrate a basic understanding of the future trends of the multimedia entertainment industry and the ability to identify opportunities for self-development. 9. Further Studies and Employment Under the new academic structure, students attaining the results of Attained and Attained with Distinction in the ApL courses are accepted as attaining the competencies required at Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Level 2 and Level 3 or above respectively for the purpose of further studies and / or work. Further Studies Students under the new academic structure are eligible to apply for admission to Associate Degree or Higher Diploma programmes if they meet the minimum entrance requirements of Level 2 in five HKDSE subjects (including Chinese Language and English Language). 17 Further Studies and Employment For further studies in bachelor degree programmes, ApL subjects are used as elective subjects, or considered for award of extra bonus or additional information, varying by institutions, faculties or programmes. Details are available at the New Academic Structure Web Bulletin ( Graduates of this ApL course may apply for admission to the following Higher Diploma programmes offered by the VTC: Higher Diploma in Digital Entertainment (Computer Animation) Higher Diploma in Digital Entertainment (Computer Game) Higher Diploma in Multimedia (Mobile Media Entertainment) Higher Diploma in Multimedia (Advertising and Promotion) Higher Diploma in Audio-Visual Entertainment Technology Graduates of the above Higher Diploma programmes may articulate to related degree programmes offered by local and overseas universities, e.g. BSc (Hons) in Multimedia and Entertainment Technology offered by the Leeds Metropolitan University, U.K., in collaboration with the VTC. Work Graduates of this course may pursue career in the multimedia and digital entertainment industries by taking up entry level positions at the start, e.g. Multimedia Design Assistant/Trainee and Computer Animation Assistant/ Trainee, etc. Upon completion of the relevant higher level study programmes, together with the accumulation of substantial operational experience in the field, graduates could take up positions of supervisory/managerial level such as Multimedia Designer and Computer Animator etc. For details on civil service appointment, please refer to the website of the Civil Service Bureau ( 16
