Table of Contents Introduction About us Development of the Code Checker Pilot As a part of the Open BIM based Technological Environment project Challenges to Development Processing and handling of IFC data for code checking Converting code texts into executable rules Concluding Remarks & Suggestions 2
INTRODUCTION SEOKYOUNG SYSTEMS bsi Summit
About us Jan. 2011: Established Jan. 2013: Awarded IFC 2x3 Import Certification for NaviTouch BIM Browser (first in Asia) 2013 current: Participant of Korean Open BIM based Technological Environment project Certificates & awards IFC2x3 Certificate buildingsmart Korea Certificate Good Software Certificate (Korea) 4
About us BIM Solution Portfolio BIM Platform BIM GIS Integration Platform BIM Management Application 5
DEVELOPMENT OF CODE CHECKER FOR IFC MODELS First Year of Open BIM Technological Environment Project SEOKYOUNG SYSTEMS bsi Summit
Open BIM based Technological Environment project Project overview Project Overview Multi year research project funded by Korean government (approx. $30M) Started in 2013 Our scope Development of the code checker and the prechecking verifier Overall project scope Our scope 7
Open BIM based Technological Environment project First Year Objective Objective: Development of a pilot system Components of the pilot: IFC File Reader Model Viewer Sample Code Rules 8
Developing Code Checker Pilot IFC File Reader and Viewer Reader Viewer Rules Reading & filtering IFC data IFC file reader Filtering necessary data for conformance tests Data extraction & evaluation functions Extraction of entity attributes Extraction of PSET attributes Extraction of geometric parameters Calculation of derivative values required for conformance tests Visualization Functions needed for visualizing test results 9
Developing Code Checker Pilot Defining Rules from Code Articles Reader Viewer Rules Process of Development: Digitalize Building Code into DB Done by other participants Analyze Code Text Write Executable Rules Provide Functions for the Rules 10
Developing Code Checker Pilot Defining Rules from Code Articles Reader Viewer Rules 1 Code text (Translated to English) Analyze Code Text 2 Identified functional requirements from 1 IfcRelContainedIn SpatialStructure IfcBuilding IfcBuilding Storey IfcTransportation Element IfcRelContainedIn SpatialStructure 4 Mapped IFC entities 11
Developing Code Checker Pilot Defining Rules from Code Articles Reader Viewer Rules Digitalize Building Code into DB Done by other participants Analyze Code Text Write Executable Rules Functional requirement Determine number of floors Target Building Provide Functions for the Rules Input arguments Reference to the IFC model Instance of IfcBuilding Min. number of floors : Number (option), Max. number of floors: Number (option) Determine Total Floor Area of given building Building Reference to the IFC model Instance of IfcBuilding Min. Total Floor Area: Number (option), Max. Total Floor Area: Number (option) Determine elevator requirement Elevator Reference to the IFC model Instance of IfcTransportElement Elevator size and type (By occupancy or By weight) Min value: Number Max Value: Number Functional requirements Rule functions 12
Developing Code Checker Pilot Defining Rules from Code Articles Reader Viewer Rules Digitalize Building Code into DB Done by other participants Analyze Code Text Write Executable Rules Provide Functions for the Rules Types of the functions Acquiring targets from the IFC data directly Querying targets from properties of the IFC Calculating targets from the IFC geometry (e.g. distance) or spatial connectivity (e.g. egress route) 13
CHALLENGES SEOKYOUNG SYSTEMS bsi Summit
Challenges in Making Code Checking Software Complex IFC Schema Problems in IFC files missing, wrong info, etc Converting code texts into rules 15
Challenges in Making Code Checking Software Complex IFC Schema Problems in IFC files missing, wrong info, etc Converting code texts into rules Number of entities in IFC 2x3: 653 Number of PSETs: 357 Same information can be described in many different ways Example: product geometry extrusion, brep, csg, surface, etc. 16
Challenges in Making Code Checking Software Complex IFC Schema Problems in IFC files missing data, wrong info, etc Converting code texts into rules caused by IFC Exporting BIM Tools Mistakes by Users Limits of IFC 17
Challenges in Making Code Checking Software Current IFC spec allows variances in definitions for a same model Even though IFC is a neutral format, An importing app can be biased to specific exporting apps Problems in IFC files missing data, wrong info, etc caused by IFC Exporting BIM Tools ArchiCAD 15 SCIA AllPlan VectorWorks 18
Challenges in Making Code Checking Software Users of the BIM tools are frequently making mistakes: NOT using the right objects e.g. using slabs for defining the site Missing some of the required objects e.g. space objects Failing to fill out all required properties with the objects Measures for avoiding the errors Modeling guidelines for code checking Pre checker application good news: we are working on it now KBIM Veri Problems in IFC files missing data, wrong info, etc Mistakes by Users caused by Work under progress as of March
Challenges in Making Code Checking Software Some features of commercial BIM apps are not supported well by IFC Parametric object definitions Mass objects (e.g. in Revit) A comparator plug in for the BIM apps might be helpful for identifying the mismatches Problems in IFC files missing data, wrong info, etc caused by Limits of IFC 20
Loss of Information During IFC Export Parametric design example Revit 2014 (.rvt file) IFC viewer (.ifc file) IFC export Parametric parapet cap section Only explicit geometry is exported, losing parametric information Detail at parapet 21
Challenges in Making Code Checking Software Very few people can do all of these well, so collaboration is crucial! Complex IFC Schema Problems in IFC files Automatic rule generation is another big challenge International collaboration will be desirable also missing, wrong info, etc Converting code texts into rules Requires expertise in Computer Programming Laws Construction Engineering 22
CONCLUDING REMARKS SEOKYOUNG SYSTEMS bsi Summit
Closing thoughts Development of code checking software is challenging because it is involved with though issues Technical challenges, as presented here Industrial readiness is yet to be satisfactory e.g. BIM users conformance to the modeling guides Lack of funding, considering the efforts required Collaboration between the interested parties should be promoted for: Heightening the industrial readiness Digitalization of the building codes 24
builidingsmart International Summit 24 March 2015 End of Presentation Thank you Address : 6F, Chungpoong bldg, Daechi dong, Gangnam gu, Seoul, Korea Phone : E mail : albert_kang@quartzsys.com Site : 25
