1 Getting Started Guide Visicon Smart BIM Tools Visicon is a collection of practical tools created to enhance your ability to visualize, interact with, extract data, quality control, quantify, analyze, and improve coordination of your BIM files. This document is intended as a quick reference guide. Refer to the User Manual other workflow-specific tutorials (download from visicon.com or view on VisiconBIM YouTube Channel) for more detailed instructions. Licensing: Visicon can be used as a free, unlicensed and Professional versions. The free version supports unlimited viewing of BIM models but limits the use of other functionality. The free version is limited to 3 custom views, 1 filter, and 10 components for the dynamic inventory feature. Reports, issues, rules, operations, and structural analytics are only available with a Professional license. You do not need a license to open and view Visicon (VXF) files created by others. Sample Models: Your Visicon installation comes with sample models that unlock all features of the program. Open these to explore how you can benefit from Visicon. Revit Models: Open Revit models directly from Revit ( ) using the plug-in that is automatically installed when you install Visicon. IFC, ADAPT INP, ETABS E2K, Point Cloud and Wavefront Files: Open them directly from Visicon. Visicon VXF Files: Save your BIM models as light Visicon project files and easily share them with colleagues and other team members.

3 Getting Started Guide BIM Model Management Creates new empty project or template file Opens IFC, INP, E2K, VXF, VTF, PTS, PTX and OBJ files Opens sample files shipped with your Visicon installation they unlock all features and let you explore all of Visicon s capabilities Saves your project as Visicon VXF file others don t need a license to view your markups, issues, and custom views Use this option to merge multiple BIM models in Visicon each model can be managed separately Use this to update / replace the geometry in your model with new components Visicon tries to retain all relationships that existed with the components you are replacing Use this function to apply a complete template file either Visicon s Default or one of your custom templates to your project and import all custom settings Import any external data into your BIM model and run reports and rules against them start the process by running Import Data Template report and extracting component Unique IDs into XLSX format Saves your project as a Visicon Portable Project (*.exe file) a portable project is a self-contained executable that runs a version of Visicon and the project data you saved use this if the person you are sending your project info to does not want to download and install a version of Visicon on their computer Save your non-geometric model configuration as a Template for future use all filters, rules, operation and report configurations are saved

4 Getting Started Guide Visibility The Visibility ribbon contains all primary features used to control the general visibility of components use the Object Properties panel to control the visibility properties of individual components Quickly turn on / off component categories Use these buttons to turn off widgets on your screen like: orbit sphere, view point cameras, and heads-up display Use this panel to turn on / off clip planes Turns on 2D projection of 3D components Snap grids to level turns on grids when you navigate your model in level mode Ghost mode makes all components transparent Reveal all temporarily turns on all hidden components

5 Getting Started Guide Model Alignment Use this button to turn on / off all the components in an imported model Model Alignment features allow you to move and superimpose different BIM models you import into a Visicon project using the Merge Into function Review and or override translation vector for selected components Opens Models panel in Project Browser that lists all imported models in your project Select different options to move / align components in your project Select Accept to apply the translation Project Browser Models panel lists imported models and allows you to set visibility, color, name and other parameters Alignment widget: select one of the rings, arrows or panels to move the selected component(s)

6 Getting Started Guide Views and Markup Opens Views panel in Project Browser that lists all views The features on this ribbon give you access to powerful and flexible 2D and 3D markup tools dimensions are repeated here for your convenience the visibility of markups is linked to each individual custom view Use 2D Overlays to markup custom views by default, the viewpoint of a view is locked when you apply an overlay appearance properties of overlays are editable through the Object Properties panel the geometry of overlays can be edited by selecting them and moving their hotspots Use this set of icons to move the position of 2D overlays up or down you may need to move an overlay to the top if you want to select and move it Use 3D dimensions to measure your model Use this icon to lock / unlock the viewpoint of your custom view 3D annotations allow you to add comments and tags to your model that can be viewed from different angles Project Browser Issues panel lists all views assign a Rule or Rule Set to apply its visibility settings to a custom view

7 Getting Started Guide Measure Use Single Mode when you are taking lots of spot measurements and don t want your measurements to become permanent artifacts in your model in this mode, the last dimension is erased when you create a new one The Cumulative mode add up individual measurements as you are taking them Constrain measurements to selected axis Constrain measurements to a clip plane Create on-the-fly dimensions of your BIM For clearer communication, add your comments directly to 3D dimensions Modify appearance and other custom settings for your dimensions in the Object Properties panel To show XYZ axis dimensions all the time, set Show Axis property to Yes Visicon s 3D Dimensions tools give the ability to quickly extract measurements from your BIM Set Show Comments to Yes to display comments on the dimension line

8 Getting Started Guide Operations Opens Operations panel in Project Browser that lists all operations Operation that let s you do a detailed comparison between two BIM model files results are presented in tabular format Operations are pre-programmed model checking algorithms that allow you to quickly run validation rules each conflict that is detected is recorded as an issue Select new operation to create Runs currently selected operation Clears previously generated issues associated with current operation After creating an operation, configure it in the Project Browser Operations panel Most operations require at least one Input and create issues for each model condition they detect

9 Getting Started Guide Issues Opens Issue panel in Project Browser that lists all issues Use these icons to associate components to the currently selected issue associated components are color coded when an issue is selected and the model is set to issue colorize mode Use Issues to track model coordination items add custom views, markups and comments run reports or share your Visicon model for quick resolution with other project members When active and in Issue colorize mode, shows components that are not associated with issues Use this icon to add a new custom view to your issue Create a new User- Defined issue When active, only displays the Added / Removed regions resulting from a 3D Boolean Difference operation Custom issue views are listed here select to activate Manage issues in the Project Browser Issues panel

10 Getting Started Guide Structural Analytic Discretizes model to generate analytical horizontal and vertical masses (load bearing elements) Generates tributary areas for all vertical load bearing components (columns and walls) Calculates load paths and allows you to visualize them The Structural Analytics feature discretizes building BIM models and uses a patented algorithm to generate tributary regions and load paths for horizontal and vertical load bearing components tributary areas are taken down the load path and presented graphically as well as in XLSX reports Carries out load takedown calculations using tributary areas and displays results graphically Choose whether to show load takedown values as total load or as representative stress Show Horizontal Mass Show Tributary Region Show Tributary Region Show Load Path Show Load Takedown

11 Getting Started Guide Colorize Visicon comes pre-programmed with many colorization modes that help you quickly identify unique characteristics of your BIM use Rules to create custom visibility behavior When active, Automatic mode switches colorize mode to correspond to the active Project Browser panel you are working on Sample colorize modes for the same model Opens Reports panel in Project Browser that lists all reports Use this mode to identify the smallest geometrical inconsistencies in your model Component Type Material Color Family Unique Geometry

12 Getting Started Guide Collaborate Centralized and off-line collaboration features are turned off for v1 they will be activated in v2 for v1, the only collaboration features that are available are user management Use this button to add a new user Opens User panel in Project Browser Manage users in Project Browser Users panel

13 Getting Started Guide Inventory The Inventory ribbon houses Visicon s Dynamic Inventory tool, a feature that gives immediate quantity feedback on selected model components Represents surface area of slabs Some cost drivers, for example Member Length, are not relevant to all component types, for example the selected slab Some inventory data can t be calculated for non-extruded components to correct, run the Convert to Extrusion operation Weight can only be calculated if the component has an associated material with density value Inventory data (quantities for 12 cost drivers) for selected components are shown in the Inventory ribbon

14 Getting Started Guide Reports Select new report type to create Runs currently selected report Visicon comes packed with useful and fully customizable reports Opens Reports panel in Project Browser that lists all reports Can run detailed quantity takeoff for your BIM model After creating a new report, configure it in the Project Browser Reports panel
