With increased vehicle size and multiple blind spots, and as more auto mation is introduced, the need for operator assistance becomes more crucial. ifm introduces the 3D Smart Sensor with patented PMD technology. The Smart Sensor provides full three-dimen sional imaging for mobile machines. It can identify multiple targets, moving or stationary, and report back their location, size, speed and trajectory at distances up to 35 meters. A sensor with single point of detection may not be reliable for indicating objects. Traditional line scanners are a step up from single point sensors. However, they only see objects on a single plane. 2

3 Obstacle detection and collision avoidance ifm has developed a new generation 3D Smart Sensor to assist mobile vehicle drivers in detecting obstacles that they may not see. The sensor's time-of-flight sensing principle with PMD technology enables the sensor to capture entire objects at extremely long distances in three dimensions. The sensor lens (70 x 23 ) creates a large Field of View while a separate IR illumination unit ensures sensing ranges up to 35 meters. IR Illumination 3D Smart Sensor OBJECT 1 OBJECT 2 Field of View OBJECT 4 OBJECT 3 INNOVATIVE ifm s 3D Smart Sensor uses time-of-flight distance measurement and photonic mixing device (PMD) technology to identify an object in its field of view. The integrated 64 x 16 smart pixel array measures 1024 points of distance to an object in the field of view, capturing the entire object in three dimensions. The Smart Sensor detects up to 20 objects in the path of a vehicle. ROBUST Withstands shock, vibration, temperature fluctuations, moisture, dirt and ingress. FAST Frame rate: up to 50 frames per second. In the scene above, four objects are detected within the path of a yellow vehicle. The 3D Smart Sensor identifies the size, distance and relative speed of each object within its Field of View. This data, shown in the example to the left, is then output to the controller. RELIABLE Operates in full sunlight up to 120k lux. FLEXIBLE Outputs via CAN (J1939 and CANopen) or Ethernet. 4 Construction machines Object detection The 3D Smart Sensor can detect up to 20 stationary or moving objects in the Field of View. Once detected, the information such as distance to, relative speed and relative trajectory are calculated within the Smart Sensor for each object. This information can be transmitted via CAN or Ethernet to the vehicle s controller. Crash prediction Crash prediction combines critical information from the Smart Sensor (distance, relative speed and trajectory) and the vehicle s controller (speed and braking distance) to intelligently signal to the vehicle's operator of an impending crash. PMD Time of Flight technology Ensures detection of scenes and objects with just one image capture in three dimensions. Long-range detection The 3D Smart Sensor is optimized for long ranges and can detect moving objects at a distance of up to 35 meters. On-board processing All images and application data are processed on board, and the results are communicated via CAN or Ethernet. Easy set-up The application parameters are quickly established with the Smart Sensor s Vision Assistant software. Ready-to-use function blocks are available for those systems using CODESYS software. 4 Application example: Automatic detection of reflectors Highly reflective objects, including safety vests, can be detected and distinguished from standard non-reflective objects.

5 Area surveillance in harsh environments Distance monitoring The distance monitoring function allows the user to simply detect the closest point to the Smart Sensor within a user-defined region of interest. 5

6 Agriculture and forestry Edge detection For the harshest environments ifm s Smart Sensor is encased in robust, completely sealed IP67 / IP69K housings and can withstand high levels of shock, vibration, EMI and temperature extremes. Resistant to extraneous light The PMD technology ensures high repeatability of the measured data even in direct sunlight (up to 120k lux) Communications Application data collected by the Smart Sensor can be communicated over CAN or Ethernet. 7 Automation solutions for agricultural machinery Line guidance and edge/swath detection The 3D Smart Sensor has the ability to recognize a swath or mound of material and determine the position in the Field of View. This information, sent via CAN or Ethernet, can be used to assist the operator in navigation or automatically guide the vehicle. Application example: Grape harvesting machine The Smart Sensor transmits all relevant data to enable automatic steering along the grape row to the machine control system, relieving the driver. 7

8 Transport and logistics High-performance measuring system The Smart Sensor s multi-phase measuring system provides reliable repeatability of measured data, even on reflective materials, and is unaffected by harsh conditions. Multiple sensor operation Multiple 3D Smart Sensors can be reliably used in the same environment without interference or crosstalk. Integrated diagnostics Integrated self-diagnostics alert the operator in cases of interference or heavy soiling to the Smart Sensor. Application example: Height monitoring for tankers The integrated minimum distance function can simultaneously monitor up to 64 selectable points above the vehicle. This distance data can be used by the operator to properly approach the target point of the aircraft. 8

9 Height and distance monitoring for airport vehicles Application example: Positioning assistance for support vehicles More than 1,000 individual measurements precisely detect the target area of the aircraft. Grouped into pre - defined regions of interest, distance monitoring becomes a reliable method of positioning a vehicle relative to its target. Application example: Assistance for aircraft tractors By monitoring a pre- defined area, the 3D Smart Sensor can either provide an end position message or a contour image of the nose wheel to the vehicle control system. In this example, the 3D Smart Sensor captures three user-defined regions of interest. The distance between the Smart Sensor and each region is determined. This distance data is transmitted via CAN or Ethernet to the vehicle controller. 9

10 Operating distance field of view pixel size The 70 x 23 opening angle of the 3D Smart Sensor creates a large Field of View. With the Illumination unit, the sensor is able to see objects at a distance of 35 meters. Pixel size is key when detecting objects within the Field of View. The longer the distance to the detected object, the larger the pixels become on the object. We recommend that the object be a minimum of 2 x 2 pixels in size for reliable detection. distance 5 m 15 m 25 m 35 m Field of View (m) Small target at 5 meters is reliably detected. In the above example, the sensor can reliably detect the small target at 5 meters because more than 2 x 2 pixels define the object. Example A Small target at 25 meters cannot be reliably detected due to pixel size. When the same small target (ex. A) is detected at 25 meters, the pixels become larger in size and are too few to define the target for reliable detection. Example B 10
