10 Automatic Hardness Measurement Since their introduction to the market, Mitutoyo s automatic hardness measurement systems have become leading products of the type. Their prime purpose is to perform highly automated measurement both of Vickers and Knoop hardness indentations with Mitutoyo regular or microhardness machines. The heart of the system is Mitutoyo s VLPAK-2000 software package that controls a high-resolution video camera and motor-driven mechanical stage to enable fast, automatic operation. Applications include testing heat-treated components and the automatic measurement of hardness test blocks which can then be supplied with UKAS certification by an accredited standards laboratory. Automatic measuring systems help operators, remove uncertainties of measurement, save time by automating operations and make it possible to carry out other tasks offline, leading to increased productivity, economy and better quality management. They are suitable for use in many roles: particularly in quality control, production, calibration, research and development, metallurgy and metallography.
