2 1. Introduction Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is measured as a value of goods services produced by resident producers during an accounting period. Accounting period could be quarterly, semiannual or annual. The following sections provide performance of economic activities in the second quarter of Key Findings The second quarter Gross Domestic Product at current prices for 2016 in absolute terms was TZS trillion compared to TZS trillion attained in the similar quarter of During the period under review, Gross Domestic Product at constant prices for the second quarter of 2016 in absolute terms was TZS trillion compared to TZS trillion for the similar quarter of The quarterly GDP increased at a rate of 7.9 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 5.8 percent observed in the corresponding period of Chart 1: Growth Rates for the Second Quarter GDP, (April June) Source: NBS The performance of selected economic activities observed in the second quarter of 2016 shows that Transport Storage increased at the highest growth rate of 30.6 percent followed by Mining Quarrying which recorded the growth rate of 20.5 percent Information Communication increased at a growth rate of 12.6 percent. However, Accommodation Services Real Estate have recorded the lowest growth rates of 2.6 percent 2.3 percent respectively for the quarter under-review. 3. Economic Growth by Economic Activity 3.1 Agriculture This activity includes the exploitation of vegetable animal resources, engaging in growing of crops, raising breeding of animals, harvesting of timber other plants, animals or animal products from a farm or their natural habitats. 1

3 During the second quarter of 2016, Agriculture activity has increased at a growth rate of 3.2 percent compared to a negative growth of 1.9 percent observed in the corresponding quarter of The increase in growth rate was attributed to favorable rainfall for agricultural production in most production areas extension services provided to farmers during the period under review. Chart 2 : Trends in the Second Quarter (April June) Agriculture Growth Rates, Source: NBS Crops The core crops covered in this sub-activity include maize, paddy, sorghum/ millet, other cereals, cassava, Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, other roots tubers, beans other pulses, dried, oil seeds, other vegetables, bananas, other fruit, cashew nuts, coffee, cotton, tea, tobacco other food cash crops. The growth in the crop production has increased at a rate of 3.4 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to a negative growth of 5.2 percent in the similar quarter of The increase in growth rate was attributed to a favorable rainfall received in production areas during the agricultural seasons government effort to provide subsidies, provision of agricultural extension services. The increase in crop production played a big role to boost agriculture growth during the quarter, since the weight of crops in this activity accounts for 58 percent. 2

4 Chart 3: Production of Selected Crops for the Second Quarter Source: Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Fisheries NBS Major crops which contributed to such increase include maize which went up by 35.3 percent from tonnes 1,054 in the second quarter of 2015 compared to 1,426 tonnes in the similar quarter of Paddy harvested also increased by 47.6 percent from 775 tonnes in the second quarter of 2015 to 1,144 tonnes in the second quarter of Sorghum increased by 14.4 percent that is from 410 tonnes in 2015 to 469 tonnes in the similar quarter of Beans increased by 74.8 percent from 266 tonnes in 2015 to 465 tonnes in the similar quarter of Round Potato increased by 38.1 percent from 134 tonnes in 2015 to 185 tonnes in the similar quarter of Livestock Livestock covers activities of rearing improved indigenous cattle; goats; sheep; pigs; donkeys horses; guinea pigs rabbits; indigenous commercial chicken; other poultry. Livestock activity has recorded a growth rate of 2.5 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 2.3 percent in the similar quarter of The increase in growth was attributed to an improved records of livestock sold for slaughter animal products such as milk skin hides during the period under review. Forestry Logging Production of timber, charcoal, fuel wood Logs, twigs, faggots (bundle of branches) nonwood forest products are major activities coverd under forestry logging. Forestry activity has registered a growth rate of 3.7 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 3.9 percent registered in the similar quarter of The growth was attributed to a sustainable harvest of forest products. Fishing The activitiy covers the harvest of fishery resources from marine or freshwater environments, with the goal of capturing fish, crustaceans other marine products. 3

5 Fishing activity recorded a growth rate of 3.6 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to a growth rate of 3.7 percent recorded in the corresponding quarter of The growth rate was attributed to fish catch during the period under review. 3.2 Mining Quarrying Mining Quarrying includes the activities of extraction of minerals occurring naturally as solids (coal ores), liquids (petroleum) or gases (natural gas). Extraction can be underground, on the surface mining or well operation. It also includes supplementary activities aimed at preparing the crude materials for marketing. The activity has registered a growth rate of 20.5 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 11.2 percent recorded during a similar quarter of The growth was mainly attributed to an increase in production of diamond, Tanzanite, salt, natural gas, gold, copper silver production. Significant production was observed in the natural gas production. The materials, substances, or components transformed are raw materials that are products of agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining quarrying as well as products of other manufacturing activities. The activity has recorded a growth rate of 9.1 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 5.2 percent in the corresponding quarter of The increase in growth rate was mainly attributed to the production of food, beverage, tobacco, textiles, cement, printing, chemicals pharmaceuticals, basic metals furniture products. 4

6 Chart 4 : Trends in the Second Quarter (April June) Manufacturing Growth, Source: NBS 3.4 Electricity Electricity generated during the period of April to June, 2016 using gas accounted for 55.7 percent of the total power generated. In the same reference period, quantity of electricity generated from hydro thermal sources accounted for percent respectively (chart 5). Chart 5: Percentage Distribution of Electricity Generated by Source for the Period of April June, 2016 Source: TANESCO The activity recorded a growth rate of 7.1 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 18.5 percent in the corresponding quarter of The growth rate of electricity activity depends mainly on the quantity of electric power generated distributed to customers. During the 5

7 period under review, total electricity generation increased to 1,751 mill. kwh from 1,559 mill. kwh generated in the similar quarter of Chart 6: Quantity of Electricity Generated (Mill. Kwh) by Source for Source: TANESCO 3.5 Water Supply The activity includes collection purification of water for water supply purposes. This activity is mainly the quantity of water supplied during the period under review. The activity grew at a rate of 4.3 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 7.6 percent observed in the corresponding quarter of During the period of April June, 2016, the quantity of water supplied has recorded 55.5 mill cubic meters in 2016 compared to 52.9 mill. cubic meter recorded in the similar quarter of Chart 7: Quantity of Water Produced for the Period April June, Source: EWURA 6

8 3.6 Construction The activity includes general construction specialized construction activities for buildings civil engineering works. The activity has recorded a growth rate of 9.0 percent in second quarter of 2016 compared to 13.2 percent recorded in the corresponding quarter of The decline in growth rate was attributed to a slow kickstart of some investment during the period under review. The quantity of cement produced in the second quarter of 2016 has increased to 1,000,818 tons from 711,079 tons produced in the corresponding period in Gravel stones produced has increased to 13.0 million tons in the second quarter of 2016 from 1.3 million tons produced in the corresponding quarter of Meanwhile, the value of imports of iron steel bars for construction purposes during the period under review increased from Sh billion in 2015 to Sh billion in Chart 8: Trends in the Second Quarter (January March) Construction Growth, Source: NBS 3.7 Trade Repair The activity includes wholesale retail sale (sale without transformation) of any type of goods, rendering services incidental to the sale of merchise. It also includes repair of motor vehicles installation repair of personal household goods. The activity registered a growth rate of 5.2 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 7.3 percent in the corresponding quarter of The decline in growth rate was attributed to the slight decrease of wholesale trade retail trade as a result of decreased imports of merchise goods. 7

9 Chart 9: Trends in the Second Quarter (April Juni) Trade Repair Growth, Source: NBS 3.8 Transportation Storage This activity includes the provision of passenger or freight transport, whether scheduled or not, by rail, pipeline, road, water or air associated activities such as cargo hling, storage etc. The activity also includes renting of transport equipment with driver or operator postal courier activities. Transport Storage increased at the rate of 30.6 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 9.4 percent registered in the similar quarter of The increase in the growth was attributed to a significant increase in number of passengers cargo transported by road rail transport transportation of natural gas via pipelines. Accommodation Food Services has recorded a growth rate of 2.5 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to a growth rate of 1.0 percent in the similar quarter of The growth was attributed to an increase of international arrivals in Tanzania from 230,965 during the second quarter of 2015 to 236,268 in the corresponding quarter of

10 3.10 Information Communication The industry covers publishing activities, motion picture, video television programming production, sound recording music publishing, programming broadcasting activities. The activity registered a growth rate of 12.6 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 11.8 percent of the similar quarter of The increase in growth by 0.8 percentage points was attributed to increase in airtime used by mobile phone customers the expansion of television radio broadcasting internet services in the country Financial Intermediation Insurance The industry covers financial service activities except insurance pension funding, insurance, reinsurance pension funding except compulsory social security, auxiliary to financial service insurance activities. The activity registered a growth rate of 12.5 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 10.0 percent registered in the similar quarter of The increase in growth by 2.5 percentage points was attributed to increase in levels of deposits of TZs trillion in the second quarter of 2016 compared to TZs trillion in the corresponding quarter of 2015; increase in lending up to TZs trillion in the second quarter of 2016 from TZs trillion in the corresponding quarter of 2015 by commercial banks as well as increase in services provided by insurance companies Real Estate This activity includes selling or buying real estate, renting real estate, providing other real estate services such as appraising real estate. Activities in this industry may be carried out on own or leased property may be done on a fee or contract basis. It also include building of structures, combined with maintaining ownership or leasing of such structures. The activity has recorded a growth rate of 2.3 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to a growth rate of 2.2 percent in corresponding quarter of The decline in growth rate was attributed to the decrease in the dem of houses for renting Professional, Scientific Technical Activities This activity includes specialized professional, scientific technical activities. These activities require a high degree of training, make specialized knowledge skills available to users. It also involves legal accounting; activities of head offices; management consultancy; architectural engineering; technical testing analysis; scientific research development; advertising market research; other professional; scientific technical veterinary activities. The activity has recorded a growth rate of 5.9 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to a growth rate of 11.9 percent registerd in the corresponding quarter of The decline of growth rate was attributed to a slight decrease in other professional, legal accounting services provided during the period under review. 9

11 3.14 Administrative Support Services The activity includes a variety of services that support general business operations. Administrative support services involves rental leasing; employment; travel agency; tour operator; reservation service related; security investigation; services to buildings lscape; office administrative; office support other business support activities. The activity has registered a growth rate of 3.2 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to a growth rate of 8.3 percent registered in the similar quarter of The decline in growth rate was attributed to a slow performance of travel agent tour operators activities rental leasing Public Administration Defence The activity includes the enactment judicial interpretation of laws, legislative activities, taxation, national defence, public order safety, immigration services, foreign aids the administration of government programs. This activity also includes compulsory social security activities. During the period under review, the activity has increased at a growth rate of 7.3 percent in 2016 compared to a growth rate of 0.4 percent recorded in the corresponding period of The growth was attributed by the increase of government spending in the public sector such as legal legislative activities which are consistent with the good governance policy Education This activity includes education in all levels both by public private education providers. The growth rate has increased from 8.0 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 7.4 percent observed in the corresponding quarter of The increase in growth rate was attributed to expansion in the enrolment of both primary secondary school pupils. 12 3.17 Human Health Social Services The industry includes the provision of health social work activities such as health care provided by trained medical professionals in hospitals other facilities other residential care activities. The activity has increased by 5.7 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 4.9 percent registered in the corresponding quarter of The increase in growth rate was attributed to an improved provision of health services to both public private health facilities in the country under the reference period Art, Entertainment Recreation This activity includes a wide range of activities to meet varied cultural, entertainment recreational interests of the general public, including live performances, operation of museum sites, gambling, sports recreation activities. The activity has recorded a growth rate of 6.9 percent in second quarter of 2016 compared to 5.2 percent registered in the corresponding quarter of The increase in growth was attributed to an increase of tourists arrivals in the country Other Services Activities This Industry includes the activities of membership organizations, the repair of computers, personal, household goods a variety of personal service activities not covered elsewhere in the classification. The activity registered a growth rate of 7.2 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 6.9 percent recorded in the similar quarter of The growth rate was attributed to an increase in the urban population personal service activities Activities of Households as Employers Activities of households as employers of domestic personnel such as maids, cooks, waiters, valets, butlers, laundresses, gardeners, gatekeepers, chauffeurs, caretakers, governesses, babysitters, tutors, secretaries etc. The activity allows the domestic personnel employed to state the activity of their employer in censuses or studies, even though the employer is an individual. The product produced by this activity is consumed by the employing household. The activity recorded a growth rate of 3.1 percent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 2.6 percent in the corresponding quarter of The growth rate was attributed to an increase in the urban population during the period under review. 4. Conclusion During the second quarter of 2016, the economy exped at a rate 7.9 percent compared to 5.8 percent registered in the corresponding period of The fastest growing activity was the 11

13 Transport Storage Service which increased at a growth rate of 30.6 percent mining quarrying has recorded a growth of 20.6 percent, information communication by 12.6 percent the least growing activities were Real Estate Accommodation Food Services which registered growth rates of 2.3 percent 2.5 percent respectively. 12
