7 GUINEA- Agricultural Census 2000/ Explanatory Notes Historical outline: Data presented here refer to the second Agricultural Census in Guinea, conducted during the year 2000/2001. Prior to this one, Guinea had conducted another census during the year 1988/1989. Organization: The Census was organized by the National Service of Agricultural Statistics (Ministry for the Agriculture, Livestock, Water and Forest), with assistance from FAO, USDA and World Bank. The preparatory phase for census lasted during 1999/2000. Actual field work for data collection was carried out during 2000/2001. The data was processed during March-December Reference date: Agricultural year 2000/2001. Definitions: Traditional holdings: traditional or individual holdings relate to agricultural households or families working in agricultural sector using traditional means of production usually used in the zone. Modern holdings (or large holdings ) units engaged in production of crops, livestock, forest or fish using production means which allow them to achieve large scale production. Parcel: is a block of land belonging to a field or to part of a field which is under a single crop or a single association of crops. Coverage: The second Agricultural Census in Guinea covered the entire country including: The rural sector and the urban sector; The traditional sector (both individual and collective holdings); The modern sector and the large farms (exhaustive enumeration). Frame: The primary sampling units were the enumeration zones established by the General Population and Housing Census of A list of regions and prefectures was used as a frame for primary unit, covering the urban and rural areas. The list of the households and the total number of inhabitants was use for second stage sampling Methods: Due to the near impossibility of carrying out an exhaustive enumeration of the Guinean agriculture, the National Agricultural Census was carried out as a sample survey. The sampling was done at two stages. At first stage selection was made for the Enumeration Zones and at second stage agricultural holdings were selected. Random sampling and stratification procedures were used to ensure reliability of results. The total sample was allocated over the administrative areas: regions and the prefectures.
