5 Executive Summary This report demonstrates the types and frequency of mobile devices used in U.S. households. The report, created using information from igr s July 2008 consumer survey, also addresses consumers perceptions of smartphones and desired changes to current smartphones that would increase adoption. Of all devices included in this survey, cellular phones still remain the most popular among consumers. According to the survey results, smartphones are not yet prevalent in consumer households, mainly due to the prices of current smartphones and the cost of service associated with these devices these two items were the most commonly cited changes that would potentially influence non-smartphone users to purchase a smartphone. Not surprisingly, PDAs are found in even fewer consumer households, due simply to the fact that today s smartphones can perform many of the same functions that PDAs can; thus, having a smartphone instead of both a cellular phone and a PDA can alleviate the burden of carrying multiple devices. Laptops with Wi-Fi are more commonly found in consumer households than both laptops with no wireless connectivity and laptops with mobile broadband. In fact, the latter two device types are used by less than one-quarter of the sample. The report also outlines several device adoption trends related to the age, gender and income level of the survey respondents.
