11 Satellite-enabled ABILITY TO ENFORCE Tracking and monitoring VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) helps prevent illegal fishing by enabling regulators to monitor and ensure vessels are fishing only where they are supposed to fish also can warn captains and owners when they enter illegal zones. It s very costly and to resource wasteful to try to patrol every area if you don t know where the boats are. More informed policy making For example, European regulators already get a daily electronic catch report from every vessel providing a real-time daily uptake report, which enables better quota management.

Water flooding into the engine room, crew were exhausted from constant bailing and pumping out. A full emergency rescue was coordinated via SMS text messages over satellite to IPP project coordinators, Inmarsat service provider Sisfo, nearby boats and Bali s Search and Rescue organisation. 13 SMARTER FISHING enabled by satellite Insights Companies and captains need to communicate to exchange vessel location, catch reports, weather information and more particularly when the information is time-sensitive. Fishing crews want to chat across their fleet about good and bad fishing locations and external factors. SSB radio has limited range, is not private. Profitability and business efficiencies At sea With private satellite voice and data, owners and fleet managers can know in real-time where is each boat and its status. 14 STAYING CONNECTED to family and friends Insights Fishermen need to stay in touch with family and friends long trips and time away can lead to boredom, loneliness, anxieties, even IUU abuses. Crews like to know their family has received their salary. Sometimes companies lose track of whether a crew member has been paid at sea or on land. Social benefits At sea I just like to know he is ok. When I get an SMS I feel relieved I like to ask him if he is eating properly, how is the job, just like when we were dating.
