2 The context AR is a promising market with high revenue forecast e.g. 80$B by 2021 Clear and long-term RoI benefits based on improvements and efficiency gains Acquisition of AR solutions mainly done by large companies Risk of control of AR technologies by only a few large actors Wide range of use cases, no one solution fits all problems A set of common key components: Tracking, localization, pose estimation, 3D reconstruction, cloud storage and more AR will be an important driver for 5G applications Lack of standards adoption: Adoption of standards bring interoperability ETSI

3 Overall Objective Achieving Interoperability: Will give end-users confidence to invest in and use (future proof) AR solutions Can prevent lock-in situation with a single vendor Can ease technology swapping, e.g. to improve applications and services To define a framework for the interoperability of AR applications and services, in order to prevent market fragmentation and enable providers to offer part of an overall AR solution To encourage an ecosystem with a diverse range of solution providers including smaller players, new entrants and academics To define a modular architecture and achieve interoperability at the interface of building blocks The focus is on interfaces, no standardisation of core technologies The building blocks can be open source, proprietary or standardised technologies ETSI

4 Creation of the ISG ARF The ISG Augmented Reality Framework (ARF) was created in November 2017 with 4 founding members Kick-off meeting in December 2017 Membership up to 15 members in May 2018 ETSI

6 Definition of AR Augmented Reality (AR) is the ability to mix in real-time spatially registered digital content with the real world. Combines real and virtual Interactive in real-time Registered in 3D ETSI

7 Initial Phase of work In this initial phase, looking for input on interoperability requirements: 1 st workshop in Berlin in February 2 nd workshop in Paris in May 3 work items created: the leader of a work item is called a «rapporteur» in ETSI terms AR standards landscape AR industrial use cases AR framework architecture ETSI

8 AR standards landscape A work item on AR standards landscape was created following ARF#1 meeting in December, 2017 Rapporteur : Marius Preda, Institut Mines Telecom The report will identify the role of existing standards relevant to Augmented Reality and document any interoperability gaps. This activity will analyse the standardization work done around Augmented Reality in various standards setting organizations. Drafting stage: initial contributions received ETSI

11 Industrial use cases for AR applications and services A work Item on Augmented Reality Framework (ARF) Industrial use cases for AR applications and services was created following ARF#1 meeting in December, 2017 Rapporteur: Ralf Schäfer, Fraunhofer HHI The objective of this work item is to write a report describing typical industrial use cases for AR applications and services. A questionnaire was developed to collect information about typical AR usage and the conditions under which AR is used. The survey was available in English, German and French and closed on 30th April. The survey results will be presented in the next presentation. ETSI

14 AR Framework architecture A work item on an AR framework architecture was created following ARF#1 meeting in December, 2017 Rapporteur: Jérôme Royan, b<>com It will define a new framework architecture for industrial AR applications and services and will be driven by the requirements resulting from the two work items on AR use cases and standards landscape. A set of key common components across all applications: tracking, registration, pose estimation, localization, 3D reconstruction, data, performance (latency) ETSI

19 Benefits to the ecosystem The Industry Specification Group (ISG) Augmented Reality Framework (ARF) will address the following goals : define an interoperability framework for AR applications and services taking into account existing AR models and compliant with relevant AR specifications. ensure that Augmented Reality services and platforms will be simpler to design, deploy and operate than what exists today enable the development of high performance Augmented Reality components which are portable between different hardware vendors, different providers of software solutions and platforms achieve the co-existence of legacy and proprietary platforms whilst enabling an efficient migration path to fully interoperable platforms encourage an ecosystem with a diverse range of solution providers including smaller players, new entrants and academics ETSI
