2 Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and Course Objectives SLO 1. Characterize the major animal phyla and compare their basic anatomy. SLO 2. Articulate the principles of Darwinian evolutionary theory. SLO 3. Relate structure to function in the vertebrate organ systems. Other Course Objectives: 1. Articulate major lines of evidence for the evolution of animal populations and larger taxonomic groups. 2. Describe fundamental aspects of animal body organization including symmetry, germ layers, body cavities, segmentation, appendages, and organ systems. 3. Compare the anatomy of the chordate classes and identify key homologies among these classes. 4. Describe major adaptive milestones in vertebrate evolution and know their approximate chronology in relation to the geological time scale. 5. Understand how genes are inherited and expressed in animals and provide examples from genetics and animal development. 6. Distinguish the early embryonic stages of the sea star and the frog, and compare these to the early embryos of birds and mammals. 7. Summarize the energy relations of animals, and compare the energetics of ectotherms and endotherms. Course Requirements and Grading Criteria Prerequisites: General Biology: BIOL 120 or equivalent (molecular and cellular biology for biology majors), CHEM 120 (General Chemistry), MATH 94 (Intermediate Algebra). Course requirements include regular attendance in lectures and laboratories, active participation in laboratory exercises, and successful completion of all exams and other required assignments. Your course grade will be based on percentage of the total points earned on the quizzes, lecture exams, lab exams, lab assignments, other assignments, lab participation, and the final exam. Grading will generally follow the scale outlined below, but consideration may be given to overall trends in performance in determining your final grade. In order to earn an A or a B, there is also a minimum performance requirement on the final exam (see table below). Assignment/Criteria Points Grading Scale Quizzes: best 4 out of 25 pts each 100 A = 90% and 75% on the final Midterm Exams: 100 pts each 200 B = 80-89% and 65% on the final Final Exam 150 C = 70-79% Lab Exams 1 and 80 pts each 160 D = 60-69% Lab Exam F = < 60% Literature review: annotated reference list 40 Lab questions and lab notebook ~ 30 Other assignments ~ 30 Lab participation 10 Total ~ 820 Exams and Quizzes. Five short quizzes will be given during discussion periods as shown on the schedule. The quizzes generally cover lecture material from the most recent lectures. The midterm and final exams are lecture exams that consist of multiple choice, short answer and short essay questions. As a rule, lecture exams test only material that is covered in the lectures and related information covered in the discussion sessions. The two midterm lecture exams are non-cumulative; the final exam is cumulative but emphasizes material covered in the last third of the course. Laboratory exams are discussed under Labs below. Review of Exams: Exams will be graded within one week of the exam date and graded exams may be reviewed in class. All graded exams and quizzes must be returned to the instructor in class and may not be removed from the classroom. If you remove an exam or quiz from the classroom, you will receive a zero on the exam. No photographs may be taken of exams and no recording is allowed when the instructor is going over an exam or quiz. 2

3 Discussions The weekly discussion sessions will be used to introduce lab topics for the following lab and to explore lecture topics in greater depth through assigned readings and in-class activities. Participation by all students in the discussions is expected and will be assessed by the instructor. Labs The weekly labs explore animal diversity, life cycles, development, and functional anatomy. The first several lab exercises consist of in-depth study of the nine major animal phyla Porifera, Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Nematoda, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda, Echinodermata, and Chordata. The remaining labs emphasize form and function in vertebrates (especially mammals) and include dissection of the fetal pig. Lab Exercises: The lab exercises follow chapters in the Hickman zoology lab manual as shown on the schedule. The specific assignment for each lab is outlined in the Zoology Labs notebook packet, which you are required to have with you in lab along with the lab manual. Beginning the second week of class, there will be a deduction of 5 points for every day that you do not have your lab manual and lab notebook with you in the lab. The lab assignments consist of specific terms, structures and concepts to learn; observations and activities to perform; and questions to answer. You are responsible for writing (neatly) answers to all questions and keeping these organized in a three-ring binder along with the assignment sheets, your lab notes and drawings. This binder will constitute your lab notebook. You will occasionally be asked to turn in your answers to lab questions for credit during the next class meeting following the lab. At other times, you will not be asked to turn in the assignment, but you are required to complete all the lab exercises and answer all the questions. Your lab notebook will be reviewed by the instructor at the end of the term and graded for completeness and organization. Lab Exams will usually start 30 minutes after the normal lab starting time on the dates shown on the schedule or announced in class. The lab exams consist of a series of stations set up in the classroom. You will have two minutes at each station and move from one station to the next until you complete the exam. The lab exams emphasize identification of animal taxa and structures on preserved specimens, models and microscope slides. They may also test knowledge of animal function, life cycles, or ecology of animals studied in the lab. Lab exams are non-cumulative and cover only the exercises done since the previous lab exam. Do not come late to lab exams, as you can not make up missed stations or return to any station. Assignment and Exam Schedule Date Assignment Due Aug 16 Lab 1 questions** **Lab questions are assigned to be worked Aug 23 Lab 2 questions, Mass Extinction essay on during the scheduled lab, but you have Aug 28 Quiz 1 until the following class meeting to complete Aug 30 Lab 3 questions the questions and turn them in for credit. 4 Reading Assignments Reading pages from the textbook (see table below) are intended to reinforce the lecture material and inform class discussions. I recommend that you go over the pages briefly before the lecture to familiarize yourself with important terms and concepts, then read the pages in detail after the lecture. Information in the textbook that is not covered in lectures or discussions will not be covered on the lecture exams, unless explicitly stated by the instructor in class. Additional reading assignments including scientific articles, book chapters and content from websites are selected to cover certain topics in greater depth. These assignments are to be read in detail and you should be prepared to contribute to class discussions of these readings. A short report may also be required for one or more of these assigned readings. 5 Attendance Regular attendance in lectures and labs is essential to learning the material in this course. Attendance may be taken at any time during the scheduled class periods. As stated in the Napa Valley College Catalog, a student who is absent for as many times as the class meets each week (i.e., two absences) will have exhausted the provision for unavoidable absences. Further absences without the prior consent of the instructor may cause the student to be dropped from the class. Make-up Exams: In exceptional circumstances, a make-up lecture exam may be arranged. You must contact the instructor before the exam in person or by phone or to be allowed to make up the exam. It is the student s responsibility to make arrangements with the instructor to take a make-up exam, which may be taken during the instructor s office hours prior to the next class meeting or during the last week of class before finals week. There is no possible make-up for a missed lab exam because of the extensive setup required. There is also no make-up for a missed quiz; however, one missed quiz can serve as your dropped quiz. Online Resources The course webpage includes the current syllabus, lecture outlines, study guides, and links to other relevant resources. The webpage is updated weekly with current announcements and course documents. Note that there may be some materials distributed in class that are not be available on the website. To access the webpage, go to the Zoology webpage link shown on page 1. Hygiene and Safety Policies There is no food or drink allowed in the laboratory classrooms in the Life Sciences building. Any food or drink must be stored in a closed container off of the lab benches and consumed outside of the classroom. Wash your hands before and after handling laboratory specimens, materials or equipment. Wear gloves (provided in the lab) for all dissection exercises and wash your hands thoroughly after completing dissections. Be especially careful handling sharp instruments. If you are injured in lab, you must notify the instructor and you will be escorted to the Student Health Center. A summary of safety guidelines and policies will be distributed and reviewed during the first lab meeting. Student Conduct Students are expected to uphold an attitude of respect, tolerance and consideration toward their classmates and the instructor. This includes maintaining appropriate behavior, language, attire, and personal hygiene in the classroom. Inappropriate or disruptive behavior in class will not be tolerated and may result in temporary or permanent dismissal from class and referral to the Vice President of Student Services. All students are expected to abide by the NVC Code of Conduct. For more information, see Student Rights and Responsibilities under Student Services on the NVC website. Cell Phone, Electronic Communication and Recording Policies As a rule, the use of cell phones, smart phones, ipods or other electronic communication devices is not permitted during class. These devices are to be turned off during class. Use of a cell phone, smart phone, or similar device during class can be considered a classroom disruption and may result in the student being dismissed from the class for the day. If there is a legitimate, urgent need to have a cell phone or messaging device turned on during class (such as for a medical, family, or child-care emergency), set the device to vibrate and step outside of the classroom to answer the call with a minimum of disturbance to the class. Audio recording of lectures is permitted with the instructor s permission for the student s individual use only. Recorded lectures may not be transmitted or shared on line. Digital cameras or smart phones may be used only to photograph lab materials during the lab exercises and field trip, but may not be used during lectures or exams. Use of a camera, smart phone, or other communication device during an exam is considered cheating and will be grounds for giving a zero on the exam (see Academic Honesty section below). 5

6 Students in need of accommodations in the college learning environment: Any student who feels she or he may need an accommodation based on the impact of a learning disability should contact Learning Services in the Library and Learning Resource Center (LLRC), room 1766, phone (707) A Learning Disability Specialist will review your needs and determine appropriate accommodations. If you need accommodations for physical or other types of disabilities, schedule an appointment with DSPS Counselor, Sheryl Fernandez, in the Counseling Department located in the 1300 building, phone (707) for appointment. All information and documentation is confidential. Please feel encouraged to make an appointment with me privately to discuss your specific learning needs in my class. Course Withdrawal September 1, 2017 Last day to drop without receiving a grade of W November 10, 2017 Last day to drop with a W In order to be dropped from the class, it is the student s responsibility to drop on line through WebAdvisor or in person at the Admissions and Records Office. Do not assume you will be dropped if you stop attending class. If you stop attending and fail to drop the class by the last drop date, you will receive an F in the course. Academic Honesty Cheating or plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated, and will be grounds for giving a lower or failing grade on the assignment or exam in question, giving a lower course grade, and/or referring the student to the Vice President, Student Services for disciplinary action. Cheating includes: copying from another s test or obtaining answers from another person during the test submitting work previously presented in another course, if contrary to the rules in either course using or consulting during an examination sources or materials not authorized by the instructor using during an examination a cellular phone, digital camera, ipod, or other electronic device that can transmit, store, or receive information ** altering or interfering with grading or grading instructions deliberately altering or interfering with examination materials, such as lab exam setups sitting for an examination by a surrogate, or as a surrogate talking or consulting with another person (except the instructor) during an examination giving information to, or receiving information from, another student that provides the recipient with an undeserved advantage on an examination, such as sharing information about an examination with a student in another section, or telling a student what to expect on a make-up exam any other act committed by a student in the course of his or her academic work which defrauds or misrepresents, including aiding or abetting in any of the actions described above. ** Be aware that having on your person a cell phone or other electronic communication device during an exam will be considered use of that device and will be grounds for receiving a zero on the exam. All such devices must be turned off and stored in a closed compartment or kept with the instructor during the exam. Plagiarism includes: incorporating the ideas, words, sentences, paragraphs or parts thereof, or the specific substance of another s work, without giving due credit, and representing the product as one s own work*** representing another s artistic, scholarly, or similar works as one s own. *** Note that this includes copying or using the same words as another student on a written assignment, even if you worked together on the assignment. While you are encouraged to discuss the lab exercises with your peers in the lab, when it comes to the written assignments, you must always write in your own words. The best practice to avoid plagiarizing from another student is to never look at another student s written work. For further details, refer to the Napa Valley College Catalog and Board Policy on Academic Honesty. 6
