Learning Outcomes: Course Description: Upon the completion of Biology 1115 and Biology 1215, students should have acquired: a broad overview of the field of biology. the conceptual background and vocabulary necessary to continue in the biological sciences. basic laboratory skills. practical experience with the process of scientific enquiry Biology is literally the study of life and spans a vast range of topics from the biochemical processes within a single cell to energy transfer between ecosystems. Every day the news contains articles on biological topics such as viral pathogens, the human genome project, genetically modified organisms, species extinction, and global warming. Clearly, to be informed, one should have a basic understanding of biological concepts. The primary objective of Biology 1115 and Biology 1215 is to provide this understanding to science majors by building a foundation of biological literacy and encouraging scientific curiosity. These courses will also provide students with the necessary background to proceed with higherlevel courses in biological sciences. 1

3 Please Note: Both Biology 1115 and Biology 1215 have to be completed successfully for transfer credit to B.C. universities and colleges as first year biology. Each course consists of four hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory per week. In order to register for Biology 1215, C - or better grade is required in Biology Students must attend all assigned lectures and laboratories. Absence from the first laboratory session will result in an "N" on your transcript. A passing grade for the laboratory portion is essential to obtain credit for this course. In order to pass the laboratory portion of the course, the average of the lab exams must be 50% or above. There are no make-up lab exams. The final lab exam mark will not be posted until after the withdrawal date. In order to be eligible to write a make-up lecture exam, a student must present a valid medical excuse stating that he/she was too ill to attend class on that day. Langara Health Services will not issue such an excuse. There are no make-up lecture quizzes. Students missing any exams in the course must notify their instructors immediately. Students should access important course material by visiting the mylangara web site, and clicking the mycourses tab to enter mywebct. The course outline, lecture handouts, genetic problems, grades, and useful web links will be posted at this site. Students are responsible for checking this site on a regular basis. 3
