6 PMP - An Introduction Project Management Professional The Project Management Professional (PMP) is the most important industry-recognized certification for project managers. You can find PMPs leading projects in nearly every country and, unlike other certifications that focus on a particular geography or domain, the PMP is truly global. Become a PMP and become a project hero. Project Management Professional (PMP) is an internationally recognized professional designation offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). There are currently 658,523 active PMP certified individuals and 274 chartered chapters across 204 countries and territories worldwide. The exam is based on the PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), and requirements to sit for the exam include, a bachelor s degree, at least 4,500 hours of experience leading and directing projects, and 35 hours of formal project management education. 7 PMP - An Introduction Eligibility To be eligible for the PMP credential, you must meet certain educational and professional experience requirements. All project management experience must have been accrued within the last eight consecutive years prior to your application submission. Experience Requirements Project Management Education Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate s degree or global equivalent) Minimum five years/60 months unique non overlapping professional project management experience during which at least 7,500 hours were spent leading and directing the project* 35 contact hours of formal education. OR Four-year degree (bachelor s degree or global equivalent) Minimum three years/36 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience during which at least 4,500 hours were spent leading and directing the project* 35 contact hours of formal education. PMP Credential Fees The proper fees for payment are determined by your PMI membership status and the examination delivery type (computer-based versus paper-based) for your geographic location. Refer to the Examination Administration section in this handbook to see if you qualify for paper-based exam delivery. Otherwise, plan on taking a computer-based exam and submitting the associated fees.
