5 Growth of Home Area Networks A home energy management system (HEM) enables householders to: manage appliances set thermostats monitor power use regulate power usage HEMs provide their own network OR connect to the Home Area Network (HAN) which communicates through the home s smart meter By 2015 GTM Research projects: The HAN penetration rate will grow from 1 in 40 to 1 in 8 U.S. homes representing 4 million units and a $250 million market. 48% national deployment of smart meters in the U.S. 5

6 Global Smart Appliance Market Growth According to Pike Research, smart appliance sales will pick up the pace starting in the 2013 timeframe and become an annual market of $26.1 billion by 2019 Per Zpryme Smart Grid Insights, from 2011 to 2015, the global household smart appliance market is projected to grow from $3.06 billion to $15.12 billion. Berg Insight concludes that the worldwide deployment of smart electricity meters will reach million at the end of 2015, based on a compound annual growth rate of 31.1 percent between 2009 and

7 US Smart Appliance Market Growth Zyprme predicts The US will dominate the household smart appliance market in 2011, accounting for 46.6 % ($1.43 billion) of the global market In 2015, the US market share is projected to maintain a significant share, 36.0% ($5.46 billion) of the global household smart appliance market IDC Energy Insights forecasts that by 2015, North American smart meter deployments will reach 88 million, representing a penetration rate of 51.4%. 7

9 AHAM Study The AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) in the US commissioned a study, to evaluate each communications technologies ability to meet the unique needs of appliance consumers. The assessment showed a clear separation of the leaders from their peers for use in appliance Smart Grid applications: Highest across the media and network layers evaluated were : Wi-Fi, ZigBee, and HomePlug Green PHY Highest scores for the Application layer were: SEP 2.0 OpenADR The draft revision of SEP 2.0, dated May 7, 2010, was used in the analysis 9

19 Smart Appliance Market Projections Smart appliances will completely replace traditional machines by Mark Ishac, a managing director at Zpryme Research & Consulting in Austin, Tex. According to Pike Research, a total of 118 million smart appliances will be sold worldwide between 2010 to 2019 IMS Research forecasts the adoption of smart appliances will begin in the US, followed by Canada and then Western Europe. fuelled by investment by governments and by the utility companies themselves, and by the introduction of financial incentives for consumers 19

20 Smart Appliance Industry Whirlpool Awarded US$19.3M in stimulus funding to build smart grid-enabled appliances Made ambitious commitment to manufacture only smart appliances by the year 2016and have 1 million smart appliances available to the market by 2012 GE plans to begin shipping smart washers and dryers by the end of 2011 or early 2012, followed shortly by refrigerators that will have a port to which a communication module can later be inserted. Other companies waiting for a firm agreement on communication technology standards so they can integrate the entire package within the appliance. 20

21 Smart Appliance Industry Samsung is offering a fridge with Wi-Fi connectivity and an 8-inch touchscreen that displays recipes and runs applications like Pandora Media Internet radio. 22 Smart Appliance Industry LG to Launch Complete Range of Smart Appliances -enabled by LG THINQ(TM) Technology The smart grid is central to LG THINQ. It installs a smart meter for making sure that appliances consume the minimum amount of energy at the cheapest possible prices. The appliances energy consumption levels are shown on their LCD displays. Consumers can use their smartphone or tablet PC to remotely monitor and control home appliances from outside the house. 22
