1 Wireless Network on Campus (SSID: UNNC- Secure) Document Type: User Guide Author(s): Information Services Please note: This guide is for using with Windows XP with Service Pack 2 above and its in-built Wireless Zero configuration service only. Other wireless management programs will likely work in a similar operation. The University provides a wireless computer network, which allows any suitably equipped device (e.g. laptop or PDA with a wireless network adapter) to connect to the University network and use Internet resources. Accessing Wireless Information Services provide different levels of access over different wireless networks (SSIDs). If you connect to the different network, you may have limited services. UNNC-Secure (For staff and student access) This network is a secure network that encrypts traffic on the network to prevent intrusions and interception of traffic. It provides access to the normal services. You can only access resources available on the public internet. Examples include You may not access campus-only resources. For example, shared file areas. How to use the wireless network? Please note that your computer or PDA must be equipped with a wireless network adapter. You should consult your computer s manual to see if it has this functionality. Only some recent PDAs have the ability to work on a wireless network.

2 Where can I access wireless? The wireless network is widely available across campus. Now it covers most of the public areas of the campus, such as the Admin Building, Teaching Building, Student Services Building and CSET Building. You can check whether you have access from where you are sitting by turning on your computer. If you are within range of an access point you will get a message telling you that your laptop has found a network, but you may be not connected. If you are not close any access point, you will receive a message telling you that the wireless network is not available. Getting Started First, a note: This guide is for use with Windows XP, using Service Pack 2 above and its in-built Wireless Zero configuration service only. Other wireless programs are likely to work in a similar fashion. 1. Connecting to UNNC-Secure To begin with, look at the network connection icon. It should be on the System Tray at the desktop bottom right, and should look like this: If this is not there, but your laptop does have a wireless adapter, then it might be turned off. Please find the switch for it on your laptop and switch it to the Power ON position. Click on the icon once to bring up the following window, you should get a list of Wireless Networks that looks like this:

Click Connect Anyway on any dialogue boxes that pop up. Then wait for the UNNC-Secure box to say Connected. 2.

3 If the UNNC-Secure network says Connected, then that s fine. If not, click on the UNNC-Secure box and press the Connect button at the bottom right. Click Connect Anyway on any dialogue boxes that pop up. Then wait for the UNNC-Secure box to say Connected. 2. Signing in on the Gateway page Open the computer s Internet browser. Your browser (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) should automatically redirect to the Gateway page, which should look like the image below.

4 Please enter your campus network account name and password, and then press the Submit button. The browser should then load up normally, and can be used to browse the Internet. If you have pop-up windows enabled, the window below will appear on your screen once you have logged in.

5 3. Log off the Internet Click on the Logout button in the pop-up window to log out. If Mozilla Firefox doesn t show the pop-up window, restarting or shutting down will usually log you off.
