HP 5130 switches Intelligent Resilient Framework (IRF) configuration Maher Saad, Chestnut Residence, University of Toronto Disclaimer The author of this document shall not carry responsibility for any damage to the network, switch(s), computer(s), software or hardware either direct or indirect as a result of following the instructions herein. Introduction This document covers IRF configuration which allows you to combine multiple switches together to appear like one with one master configuration, and to be easy managed using one IP address. Other benefits are introduced on the HP 5130 EI Switch Series IRF Configuration Guide documentation. This document combines three switches together, not far apart from each other, to appear like one; one acts as the master and the two others act as slaves. You may add more slaves as required. You may use SFP+ modules and fiber cables for longer distance if the switches will be far apart from each other. For more information please refer to the HP 5130 EI Switch Series IRF Configuration Guide documentation. This document is intended for I.T. and/or network professionals. However, other users with basic network understanding may find this document useful and straight forward to follow. Note: The commands used herein may also work on different switch make and models, please refer to the reference manual of your switch to compare commands syntax first This document uses PuTTy as the tool to communicate with the switch If you are still experiencing, you may not save the changes, simply reboot without saving or just unplug the power cord from the switch Requirements - Three HP G-PoE+-4SFP+ (370W) EI JG936A switches - Three HP X240 10G SFP+ Direct Access Cables (DA cables) or compatible, for short distance - A PC capable of hosting a 9 Pin serial cable (this is the console cable provided as part of the switch package contents) - PuTTy or similar tool to establish connection to the switch (ensure safe download links) Prerequisites - Applying HP5130 switch; Comware and POE firmware upgrades via TFTP document to all three switches so that all three switches have the same software image version, IRF auto-update must be enabled (it is by default), and - Applying a master configuration to the master switch. An example can be found on the HP5130 switch; Production deployment example documentation. Both documents can be found at Brief - Do not connect the SFP+ DA cables yet - Apply the latest Comware and POE firmware images to all three switches - Configure your master switch as you would do for your department standard production deployment - Renumber and optionally reprioritize the two slave switches - Configure port interfaces on all three switches - Activate IRF configuration - Save and reboot - Physically connect the three switches together using the SFP+ DA cables Document version: MS18OCT2015, revision: 03NOV15 1
Procedure 1. Power ON the switch and connect the console cable between the PC and the console port of the switch 2. Use PuTTy or similar tool to establish a serial connection to the switch. Typical COM port configuration may look like the following, please refer to your switch reference manual for accurate settings: 3. Out of box when switch boot for the first time, it will try to load automatic configuration. After switch boots you may see repeated messages as illustrated in the snapshot below, you may then press CTRL_D to break: 4. After pressing CTRL_D you may receive prompts as illustrated in the snapshot below, meaning you are ready to communicate with the switch: Document version: MS18OCT2015, revision: 03NOV15 2
5. Apply the latest Comware and POE firmware images on all switches as described in the HP5130 switch; Comware and POE firmware upgrades via TFTP document found at 6. Now, there are three main steps to combine the three switches together into one using IRF. Please note that you may complete the configuration in a temporary location, such as your office desk, using one power cord and one console cable moving both back and forth between the three switches until all configuration is complete: Step #1: Renumber the switches. On the PuTTy session apply the commands below to the respective switch (#2 and #3), then save and reboot: Switch #1 (master) Switch #2 (slave) Switch #3 (slave) This switch does not need to be renumbered since it is #1 by default irf member 1 renumber 2 y irf member 1 renumber 3 y The following snapshot illustrates an example of switch #3 interface using the respective commands, prompt answers and reboot: 7. Step #2: Configure ports and complete IRF configuration. On the PuTTy session apply the commands below to the respective switch, then save and reboot: On switch #1 (master) On switch #2 (slave) On switch #3 (slave) int ten 1/0/27 int ten 1/0/28 irf-port 1/1 port group int ten 1/0/27 irf-port 1/2 port group int ten 1/0/28 int ten 1/0/27 undo int ten 1/0/28 undo int ten 2/0/27 int ten 2/0/28 irf-port 2/1 port group int ten 2/0/27 irf-port 2/2 port group int ten 2/0/28 int ten 2/0/27 undo int ten 2/0/28 undo irf-port 3/1 port group irf-port 3/2 port group undo undo The snapshot next page illustrates an example of switch #3 interface using the respective commands, prompt answers, save and reboot: Document version: MS18OCT2015, revision: 03NOV15 3
8. Step #3: Connect the switches as illustrated below using the SFP+ DA cables: Port #27 of switch #1 will connect to port #28 of switch #2 Port #27 of switch #2 will connect to port #28 of switch #3 Port #28 of switch #1 will connect to port #27 of switch #3 9. Configure the master switch according to your department standards. For an example, please refer to the HP5130 switch; A basic production deployment example document found at Please note, when applying the configuration following the basic production deployment example documentation, you will need to replace the command line aux 0 by line aux 0 2 to include all three switch consoles 0, 1, and 2 Document version: MS18OCT2015, revision: 03NOV15 4
Finally, you are ready move the switches to your production rack and connect all your network devices to the new switch setup Additional comments You may remove a switch from IRF configuration using the following command lines, and then save and reboot, presuming slave switch #3 is the one to disconnect and remove from IRF: irf-port 2/2 undo port group int Ten-GigabitEthernet3/0/28 irf-port 2/1 undo port group int Ten-GigabitEthernet3/0/27 undo undo irf member 3 renumber 1 You may also consider restoring your switch to factory defaults configuration as explained on the HP5130 switch; Restore to factory default configuration document found at: References - HP Networking Configuration and Demo - IRF configuration: - HP 5130 EI Switch Series IRF Configuration Guide End of document. Document version: MS18OCT2015, revision: 03NOV15 5
