1 Pre-LCI F Series NBT (EVO) Retrofit Adapter (with MOST bus support) Rev 1.5 BEFORE YOU START READ THE COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE BEGINNING THE INSTALLATION IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE USE OF THIS DEVICE, CONTACT YOUR BIMMER RETROFIT REPRESENTATIVE BEFORE USE Installation of this retrofit adapter should be performed by an installer with appropriate knowledge and experience. We strongly recommend using services of professional installers, experienced with BMWs, for this installation. Battery should be disconnected prior to the installation for safety reasons. Reconnection of the battery should be done only after all electrical connections are in place.

2 PRODUCT ACTIVATION IS REQUIRED The FeNBT Retrofit Adapter which you have purchased requires activation using a unique activation code, which will be provided by Bimmer Retrofit online via Unless otherwise specified or advised by the sales team, your FeNBT Retrofit Adapter delivered to you is NOT ACTIVATED. In order to make it function correctly, you have to activate it. Please see the appropriate section of this instruction. This manual covers installation of the Pre-LCI F series NBT (Evo) PNP* retrofit adapter. *additional coding, configuring, wire reconnection and wire splicing is required for proper functionality. 3 DEVICE OVERVIEW Pre-LCI F series NBT (Evo) retrofit adapter with PNP* cables *additional coding, configuring, wire reconnection and wire splicing is required for proper functionality.

4 INSTALLATION OF RETROFIT ADAPTER STEP 1 Remove original pre-lci head unit ( head unit ) from its position (but do not disconnect any of the wiring just yet). This will require you to remove plastic trim from your dashboard and unscrew appropriate screws. Depending on the model of your BMW, you may need to switch transmission to Drive position before removing the head unit (to give more space to maneuver). We also recommend that you place some protective blanket on the center console trim, to avoid possible scratches and dents. PNP* Harness version installation steps (for all BMW F series) *additional coding, configuring, wire reconnection and wire splicing is required for proper functionality. STEP 2 1. Locate the main quadlock harness at the back of the head unit, as shown on the picture. Note that the colors of the wires connected to the harness may vary from one vehicle to another. Head unit in picture is shown for reference only.

5 2. Disconnect the quad lock connector from head unit and take a quick look at it. You will need a flat screwdriver in order to remove the MOST optical connector from the quadlock connector harness and re-plug it into the quadlock connector of the retrofit adapter PNP* harness. WARNING! It is important to reconnect this MOST optical cable in order to avoid loss of sound and other multimedia features. 3. Gently pull the plastic lock on the connector using a screwdriver and pull up two optical cables. 4. Now re-plug this optical connector into the same position of the retrofit adapter s quadlock harness.

6 5. Connect the Main quadlock connector harness into the opposite end of the retrofit adapter s quadlock harness. STEP3 Locate ZGW module in your vehicle. It is usually located at the driver s side under the dashboard.

7 Unplug MOST optical connector from ZGW module and terminate it using standard MOST loop terminator. In order to terminate MOST optical cable, disassemble it first and remove both optical pins from connector body. Insert connectors to MOST terminator and push them towards each other to lock them inside. Please note that without notice we may include different type of MOST loop terminator shown in the pictures below. This MOST terminator does not require cable disassembly prior to termination.

8 Plug one side of the extension MOST optical cable into ZGW module. Route MOST optical cable under the dashboard to where the head unit is located and plug the other end of the cable to Retrofit Adapter Module. Your retrofit adapter s MOST connector may have protective insert installed in the middle. Remove it prior to MOST cable connection if installed. STEP 4 Connect 12pin connector from PNP* wiring harness to the Retrofit Adapter Module. Make sure that connector plug is fully inserted into the 12 pin connector on the Retrofit Adapter Module. STEP 5 (NOT mandatory) This step is NOT mandatory and will not influence functionality of the Retrofit Adapter. This step can be completed at any time. In order to retain functionality of the PDC/HDC buttons on the center tunnel it is required to connect additional wires to the center tunnel switch. Disassemble and remove center tunnel cover. Locate PDC/HDC buttons switch assembly which has two connectors plugged in. One connector is 6 pin and other is 4 pin. Keep 6 pin connector plugged. That connector provides GND connection. Disconnect only 4 pin connector from buttons switch assembly and remove all wires from 4 pin connector plug.

9 Connect wire from pin 9 of retrofit adapter to pin1 of 4 pin connector. Connect wire from pin 10 of retrofit adapter to pin2 of 4 pin connector. Connect wire from pin 8 of retrofit adapter to pin3 of 4 pin connector. You may require to crimp new pins on to wires from retrofit adapter. Make sure that wires are properly connected and isolated. It is recommended to secure wires to each other with tie-ups. Warning! This step requires wire splicing and reconnection. It is important to properly isolate and secure all connections. This step must be done by professional with appropriate knowledge. STEP 6 Secure retrofit adapter module behind the dash using tie-ups or other type of mounting. Ensure that retrofit adapter module is secured and wiring attached to it is not blocking head unit path in the dash board. Normally at the back of the head unit tunnel in the dash board on the right or left side, there will be some opening. You may use that opening to install adapter. This will let you install head unit properly to the end of the tunnel.

10 STEP 7 USB/AUX in armrest, USB in glove box, microphone, BT antenna NBT (Evo) head unit incorporates inside both multimedia platform and a Combox (USB and Bluetooth). In order to be able to use AUX input and microphone, as well as USB connectors you will have to connect all of the existing wires (microphone, AUX, USB) to the back of the NBT (Evo). For pin out and other information (related to the existing modules: TCU, MULF or Combox) refer to the information below. If your vehicle is not equipped with a microphone, you may install it at this time and pass two wires from it to the back of the NBT(Evo). Pin out information for NBT(Evo) is provided below. If your vehicle is equipped with USB in the armrest or USB in the glove box (or both) you will need to pass wires from these USB connectors to the back of the NBT(Evo) as well. You need to connect BT antenna to the NBT unit. If you installing NBT Evo unit you also need to connect WiFi antenna to it. The BT antenna port has tan color and WiFi antenna port has dark red color. Same type of antenna can be used for both Bluetooth and WiFi. STEP 8 TCU, MULF, Combox If your vehicle is equipped with TCU, MULF or Combox you need to REMOVE these modules completely or fully disconnect these from MOST optical and electrical wiring. Also in this case, it is absolutely required to either add MOST loop terminator or disconnect and terminate any unused MOST connectors in the MOST hub. If you prefer to terminate (not disconnect them in the MOST hub) the MOST connectors using MOST loop terminators, contact the seller to see if MOST loop terminators are available as part of the wiring kit for your vehicle. These MOST loop terminators are not the part of the standard kit and they are NOT supplied with the FeNBT kit. If any MOST connectors are not properly terminated, your multimedia system in the vehicle will not work! Do not terminate more than one MOST connector in a row with use of MOST loop terminators. Instead disconnect these in the MOST hub.

11 NBT(Evo) PIN-OUT INFORMATION Below is the information about NBT quadlock pin-out for the different connections: Microphone1 pins: Pin17 Mic+ Pin22 Mic- Auxiliary Input: Pin30 Aux In L Pin35 Aux In R Pin36 GND Rearview camera input: (please note that you have to connect your camera video feed to input2*) Video Input1 Pin 21 Signal+ Pin 24 Signal Pin 23 - Shield Rearview camera, DVD Changer, TV or other video source input (if available): Video Input2 Pin 28 Signal+ Pin 27 Signal Pin 26 - Shield

12 TRSVC Rear View camera connection NBT and NBT Evo headunits have two video inputs in its quadlock connector in the back. Depends on your vehicle configuration your OEM rearview camera may be connected to Video input1 or to alternative pins (see above). FeNBT adapter occupied Video input1 for its purposes and does not allow video signal pass-through. 1. In case if your vehicle is equipped with OEM TRSVC reverse camera which is connected to video input1 (see pinout information above) you have two choices: 1.1 Move camera video feed pins in vehicle quadlock connector from input1 to input2 in accordance with pinout information provided above (pin21 28, pin24 27, pin23 26) FDL Code headunit for reverse camera on video input2 (wert_42 for NBT and wert_02 for NBT Evo) OR 1.2 Another option would be to move camera video feed pins from input1 in vehicle quadlock connector to same positions in FeNBT adapter quadlock connector which goes to headunit. Remove and isolate original wires from video input1 pins of FeNBT quadlock connector. FDL Code headunit for reverse camera on video input1 (wert_41 for NBT and wert_01 for NBT Evo) 2. In case if your vehicle is equipped with OEM TRSVC reverse camera which is connected to alternative pins (CIC video input) 18,28,27 (see pinout information above) you have two choices: 2.1 Move camera video feed pins in vehicle quadlock connector from alternative input to input2 in accordance with pinout information provided above (pin18 28, pin27 26, pin28 27) FDL Code headunit for reverse camera on video input2 (wert_42 for NBT and wert_02 for NBT Evo) OR 2.2 Another option would be to move camera video feed pins from alternative input in vehicle quadlock connector to video input1 in FeNBT adapter quadlock connector which goes to headunit (pin18 21, pin28 24, pin27 23). Remove and isolate original wires from video input1 pins of FeNBT quadlock connector. FDL Code headunit for reverse camera on video input1 (wert_41 for NBT and wert_01 for NBT Evo)

14 STEP 9 (INSTALLING THE HEAD UNIT) Install your new head unit (NBT or NBT Evo) inside the dash board. Follow the procedure which was used to remove head unit initially from the dash board. Warning! Avoid installing retrofit adapter module in direct contact with hot surfaces (head unit, vehicle heater, etc) because excessive heat may damage retrofit adapter. IS CODING REQUIRED IN YOUR CASE? If your Retrofit Adapter was purchased as part of the complete NBT (or NBT EVO) kit, NBT (or NBT EVO) head unit will come pre-coded for your vehicle. Additional coding of the head unit will NOT be required, however, coding of your VEHICLE may be required (it can include KOMBI, Amplifier or another ECUs coding). In case your Retrofit Adapter was purchased separately (i.e. you bought your NBT or NBT EVO head unit from a third party), your head unit will need to be pre-coded for your vehicle in order to work correctly. Retrofit Adapter is required for the NBT/NBT EVO retrofit to work in pre-lci F-series, but it does NOT replace coding of NBT (NBT EVO) head unit. Contact the seller of your NBT/NBT EVO head unit to obtain instructions on the coding of your head unit to your vehicle. We provide minimal coding requirements list for NBT (Evo) to work correctly with FeNBT retrofit adapter. Warning! Head unit coding must only be done using direct IP address connection to head unit (DIAGADR63). Whenever ENET cable is connected to vehicle it is required to locate DIAGADR63 which is head unit s IP and connect to its address. Coding of head unit via DIAGADR10 (ZGW) is not currently supported.

15 Head unit LAN connection for coding NBT in vehicle with ZGW High If your vehicle is equipped with ZGW High (CIC was factory installed in vehicle) and you installing NBT headunit than you should be able to use ENET cable for headunit coding directly through OBDII port. Ignition must be ON at all times during coding. Connect ENET cable to vehicle and to DHCP router. Open up router control panel and find network device with name: DIAGADR63 this is your headunit. Use software (Esys) to connect with headunit. Have your FA file previously saved/prepared). Load up FA file and proceed with coding. Note that you will not be able to read FA from headunit thus FA must be prepared in separate file first. NBT Evo in vehicle with ZGW High If your vehicle is equipped with ZGW High (CIC was factory installed in vehicle) and you installing NBT Evo headunit than you should be able to use ENET cable for headunit coding directly through OBDII port. First however you need to modify your network connections in the back of headunit. NBT Evo has its network pins inside of separate OABR connector. You need to reroute four (4) wires from OABR port of NBT Evo to quadlock connector wires. Use diagram provided above. Ignition must be ON at all times during coding. Connect ENET cable to vehicle and to DHCP router. Open up router control panel and find network device with name: DIAGADR63 this is your headunit. Use software (Esys) to connect with headunit. Have your FA file previously saved/prepared). Load up FA file and proceed with coding. Note that you will not be able to read FA from headunit thus FA must be prepared in separate file first.

16 NBT Evo OABR network connector is located under quadlock. Locate the following 4 wires in NBT Evo headunit s quadlock conenctor plug at vehicle side and re-route these to OABR connector plug on the NBT Evo. NBT Headunit quadlock EVO OABR Connector NBT or NBT Evo in vehicle with ZGW Mid If your vehicle is not equipped with ZGW High (CIC was not factory installed in vehicle) and you installing NBT or NBT Evo headunit than you should be using dedicated LAN cable to connect your headunit to router. Build cable according to pnout below. For NBT Evo connect to OABR port and for NBT connect to OBD quadlock. Ignition must be ON at all times during coding. Connect LAN cable to headunit and to DHCP router. Open up router control panel and find network device with name: DIAGADR63 this is your headunit. Use software (Esys) to connect with headunit. Have your FA file previously saved/prepared). Load up FA file and proceed with coding. Note that you will not be able to read FA from headunit thus FA must be prepared in separate file first.

17 LAN network cable pinout Should you decide not to use OBDII port and connect your NBT (Evo) directly to LAN RG45 cable you may use the following diagram for both NBT and NBT Evo systems: RG45 LAN connector NBT Quadlock connector NBT Evo OABR Network connector For NBT only you must also connect Quadlock connector pin 29 to +12V via ~510 Ohm resistor. That will activate network adapter inside of NBT unit. There is no need to connect additional 5 th wire for NBT Evo connection. The following* minimal FDL coding settings are required for NBT and NBT Evo to work correctly with FeNBT retrofit adapter: GATEWAYTABLE: table_5 this is the gateway mode which FeNBT supports If NBT headunit with HW07 or 08 is installed it is acceptable to use table_0 instead. KOMBI_CIC: kombi_mid (basic cluster) or kombi_high (6WA or 6WB cluster) BASIS_KOMBI_MMI_LIST: aktiv EINHEITEN_MASTER: kombi_l6 COMMUNICATION_PARKMASTER: gen2 CAN_ANSCHLUSS_HEADUNIT: hu_an_body_can OELSTANDSMENUE: aktiv OELSTAND_OENS: nicht_aktiv (or aktiv both should be supported) VEHICLE_STATE_CONCEPT: conventional_clamp (this is only for NBT Evo) *This is short version of document for minimal coding instructions. See separate full document.

18 Setup and configuration of the FeNBT Retrofit Adapter using enbt Utility enbt utility allows you to connect to the FeNBT Retrofit Adapter using USB cable and perform the following tasks: FeNBT adapter activation code importation and module activation Current settings and status read (required for remote diagnostic) FeNBT adapter configuration

19 IMPORTANT! Be careful when connecting or using USB plug to/with Micro USB port as excessive pressure on the connector will damage the port inside of the adapter and will make device unrepairable due to internal PCB traces damage. Connection of the adapter over USB requires driver installation. Currently we only provide a driver for Windows PC. This driver is usually included with utility in the download package. Driver installation procedure and other useful utility functions will be described below. 1. In order to use enbt Utility you need to have the following: 1.1 FeNBT Retrofit Adapter installed in your vehicle or sitting at your table 1.2 Micro-USB to USB cable to connect FeNBT adapter to your computer 1.3 Driver and latest Utility for FeNBT Retrofit Adapter which can be downloaded from here: Once you download the.zip archive please unpack it. 1.4 Windows7 based or similar computer with.net Framework installed. If required you may download.net Framework 4.5 from this link: 2. Connect your FeNBT Retrofit Adapter to your computer. In case the FeNBT Retrofit Adapter is installed in your vehicle please turn ignition ON prior to connecting the FeNBT Retrofit Adapter to your PC via the USB cable. You may also start engine if desired.

20 3. Go to your Control Panel Device Manager and find a new device. 4. Right click on the new device and select Update driver mode. 5. Choose: Browse my computer for driver software

21 6. You may get a security prompt. Select: Install this driver software anyway Warning: If you use Windows8 you may require to temporary disable Driver s Digital Signature verification before installing driver. Please check with Windows manual or Google this information. 7. Once the driver is installed, you should see in your Device Manager new COM port device. Note its COM port number. You will need it in the next steps.

22 8. Start the FeNBT Retrofit Adapter utility called enbt Serial Retriever. 9. In the utility click on the drop down menu and select your COM port number. It should be the same COM port number as was installed in your device manager. Normally application will already contain the number for the correct COM port entered automatically. 10. Click Connect button and if everything is correctly setup adapter will connect with utility. Do not forget to click Disconnect/Connect button again before you unplug USB cable from adapter. FIRMWARE UPDATE MODE FOR RETROFIT ADAPTER MODULE It is not supported on Mac computers yet. Sorry Mac owners, you have to use Windows PC for this update. Remove your headunit and get access to the retrofit adapter module. Disconnect adapter from headunit or from vehicle wiring. Plug micro USB cable into the slot on the adapter. Whenever firmware update procedure is required please follow the following steps: 1. Connect to PNP Utility as described above in the manual using USB cable or alternatively use manual firmware update mode described in the next paragraph. 2. Select from drop down menu Firmware Update mode and press Run Task button 3. Make sure that you have received new firmware update file from manufacturer. 4. Open File Explorer. You will see that new disk drive appeared in the system.

23 5. Open newly appeared drive. You will see there is a file: firmware.bin 6. Delete this file from the drive. 7. Copy new firmware update file from your computer to the newly appeared disk drive. You should have only one! file on this drive now. Firmware update file may have a name different from firmware.bin Usually firmware update file has a name which includes firmware version, however the file extension should be.bin. There is no need to rename new firmware update file back to firmware.bin It is important not to interrupt process of file copying during the firmware update. Also it is important to make sure that you copied the correct firmware update file, received from the manufacturer to your retrofit adapter module. You should copy to retrofit adapter module only firmware update file and not any other files.

24 MANUAL FIRMWARE UPDATE MODE FOR THE RETROFIT ADAPTER MODULE If for any reason your firmware update is not successful using the method above and your module can no longer enter the firmware update mode, you can use the Manual firmware update method described below. For the firmware update of the Retrofit Adapter Module you will need to have the following: 1. Micro USB to USB adapter cable 2. Standard pen or pencil 3. Computer with at least one USB port available and Windows system installed In order to perform the firmware update, following the steps: 1. Disconnect and remove retrofit adapter module from your vehicle. 2. Plug USB cable to your retrofit adapter module. There is a small Micro USB connector on the side of the module. 3. Take a pen or pencil and use it to gently press a small button via the hole located on the side next to USB connector. Please do not push hard as it may damage the button. While holding the button down, connect another end of the USB cable to your PC s USB port.

25 4. After short time (up to 10 seconds) you will see that new drive (G:) appeared under My Computer. This drive will have a name: CRP1 ENABLE. 5. Immediately release button as soon as you see drive appeared under My Computer. In your case it will most probably have a different letter (D:, E:, F:, etc.) 6. Newly appeared drive will contain a single file called: firmware.bin 7. Delete this file (firmware.bin) completely from the drive. 8. Copy new software update file which you received from us onto the drive G: 9. Once the file is copied disconnect USB cable from your computer. 10. Disconnect USB cable from retrofit adapter module and install module back to your vehicle. 11. Software update is now completed.

26 Activation using enbt Adapter Utility (fast method) 1. Start enbt Utility and connect to your FeNBT Retrofit Adapter to your computer using USB cable 2. Select the appropriate COM port which belongs to FeNBT Retrofit Adapter and click CONNECT button. 3. Copy/paste your activation code from certificate file provided by the seller to the utility field ACTIVATION CODE. It is normal if after pasting the activation code into the ACTIVATION CODE field, some part of it will not be visible as complete number does not fit completely on the field provided, however it is still accessible by the utility. Make sure that you have copied complete activation code provided by manufacturer into the ACTIVATION CODE field of the utility. This code always starts with the number, ends with the number and between each separate number there must be a - sign.

27 Click ENTER CODE button. After short period of time, utility will show the activation status. It is possible that during activation your NBT display will switch off for short period of time.

28 FeNBT Retrofit Adapter Serial Number Retrieval If there is a need to retrieve your FeNBT adapter s ESN (electronic serial number) it can be done as described below. 1. Select COM port of your enbt adapter and click Connect button. Button will become green if connection is established OKAY. 2. Click on the Get Serial button. You will receive a serial number of your FeNBT Retrofit Adapter which will be shown in the green area of the utility program. Copy or write down this number and send it to technical support or your Customer Service representative together with your vehicle s VIN number in order to get the Activation code.

29 3. At any time when you need to verify current FeNBT adapter settings or verify its activation status you may click Read Settings button.
