2 General Introduction Risk parameters: With MIRO SAFE Murrelektronik offer safe control technology for a wide range of industrial applications. MIRO Safety relays can be used for emergency-stop and guard-door monitoring, two-hand operation, for safety mat and light barrier applications. New: MIRO Safe Flex, the flexible component for various applications and MIRO Safe SSO (Safety Semiconductor Outputs) with solid state outputs that never wear out. The list of benefits for using MIRO Safety Relays is as long as the list of applications. MIRO SAFE helps to reduce downtime and optimize outages since MIRO SAFE relays are intentionally applied to protect man and machine. They are TÜV and UL (some models) approved. The informative appendix A of the standard presents a qualitative procedure for risk evaluation and determination of the PL. The same risk parameters as provided in EN are used for the risk evaluation

3 General Terms and Definitions Safety With Opposite Polarity Stop categories Dangerous conditions on a machine must be rectified as quickly as possible. Standard EN requires that every machine be equipped with a category 0 stop function. Category 1 and/or 2 stop functions must be provided if they are necessary for the machine s safety and/or functional requirements. Cross circuit monitoring means the capability of a safety switch to detect errors (e.g. pinched cables or ground faults) in the monitored safety chain, and to inhibit the release of the release circuits until the external fault has been rectified. Emergency Stop There are 3 categories of stop function: Stop category 0: Shutdown by immediate disconnection of the power supply to the machine drives. Stop category 1: Controlled shutdown - power supply to the machine drives is retained in order to carry out the shutdown procedure. The power supply is only disconnected when shutdown has been achieved. Stop category 2: Controlled shutdown - power supply to the machine drives is retained. Emergency stop devices must take priority over all other functions. Power supply to the machine drives that can produce dangerous conditions must be shut down as quickly as possible without causing additional danger. Resetting the drives may not result in a restart. Emergency stop must cause either a category 0 or a category 1 stop. Resetting the control unit may only be possible as the result of a manual action carried out on the control unit. Resetting the control unit may not trigger a restart command. The machine may only be restarted once all the manual operating elements have been reset separately or on purpose (EN 418). The safety relay may be used for emergency-stop applications up to maximum category 4/PL e acc. to EN ISO , depending on model, configuration and cable routing of sensors. Autostart/Manual Start Autostart: The device switches on the release circuits automatically as soon as the switch-on conditions (sensor and feedback loops closed) are fulfilled. Manual Start: If an ON button is built in the return circuit, a manual start can be realized using the Autostart function. Guard-Door Monitoring EN 1088 makes a distinction between interlocking guards and interlocking guards with guard locking. Monitored Start To switch on the release circuits, the switch-on conditions (sensor and feedback loops closed) must be fulfilled. In addition, the devices must be started by pressing an ON button
