3 Product description Product description Functional principle In continuous measurement, the level in a vessel is detected by a sensor and then transferred to the VEGAMET signal conditioning instrument for further processing. Through an adjustment in VEGAMET, the measured value can be adapted to the individual circumstances. The requested measurement parameter is indicated in the display and outputted to the integrated current outputs for further processing. Hence the measuring signal can be transmitted to a remote display or a connected control system. For level detection there are two or three additional operating relays integrated in each signal conditioning instrument. They can be used to control pumps or other actuators. Area of application In conjunction with the appropriate sensors, VEGAMET signal conditioning instruments can be used in a variety of applications: l Level measurement l Gauge measurement l Differential measurement/differential pressure measurement l Process pressure measurement l Distance measurement l Interface measurement l Temperature measurement VEGAMET also serves as (Ex) power supply unit for the connected sensors. Power supply is carried on the same two-wire cable. As an option, an input without sensor power supply (passive input) is available, enabling the connection of transmitters with own supply voltage (sensors in four-wire version). Depending on the instrument type, up to five independent sensors can be connected and their measured values processed. Safety The integrated fault monitoring detects faults of the VEGAMET as well as those of connected sensors. If such a fault is detected, the integrated fail safe relay de-energises and a fault signal is displayed via the LEDs on the front panel. Also the current output jumps to an adjustable fault current. The instrument has the following approvals: l Ex approval as auxiliary, intrinsically safe instrument l WHG as part of an overfill protection system l Ship classification according to GL for use in the ship and marine sector Operation With all instruments, adjustment can be carried out via the integrated indicating and adjustment unit. On adjustment is also possible via a Windows PC with appropriate software. For connection, either the VEGACONNECT interface converter or one of the optionally available RS3/Ethernet interfaces is required. Signal conditioning instruments 3

5 Mounting instructions 3 Mounting instructions Installation can be mounted in the following ways: l Carrier rail 35x7.5 according to EN 500 l Wall mounting l Recessed panel mounting Carrier rail mounting 3 Installation location Each series 600 VEGAMET consists of the actual signal conditioning instrument as well as a plug-in socket for carrier rail mounting. Because it has protection class IP 30 or IP 0, the instrument is intended to be used in switching cabinets. Mounting The plug-in socket is constructed for carrier rail mounting according to EN 500. Power supply is connected to terminals 7 and 8. For neighbouring series 600 signal conditioning instruments, it is possible to continue connection L and N directly via the supplied bridges. Before setup of a VEGAMET in Ex version, the Ex separating chamber must be attached (as shown below). Safe operation can be only ensured if the operating instructions manual and the EU type approval certificate are observed. VEGAMET must not be opened. 05 ø 4,5* Instrument coding All series 600 signal conditioning instruments are provided with different gaps dependent on type and version (mechanical coding). Preparing the connection Note safety instructions Generally note the following safety instructions: l Connect only in the complete absence of line voltage l If overvoltage surges are expected, overvoltage arresters should be installed Take note of safety instructions for Ex applications 4. Wiring plan In hazardous areas you should take note of the appropriate regulations, conformity and type approval certificates of the sensors and power supply units. Select power supply The power supply can be 0 53 V AC, 50/60 Hz or 0 53 VDC. Selecting connection cable Power supply of VEGAMET is connected with standard cable according to the national installation standards. Standard two-wire cable without screening can be used to connect sensors. If electromagnetic interference is expected, screened cable must be used. Cable screening and grounding Connect the cable screen on both ends to ground potential. In the sensor, the screen must be connected directly to the internal ground terminal. The ground terminal outside on the housing must be connected to the potential equalisation. If potential equalisation currents are expected, the screen connection on VEGAMET must be made via a ceramic capacitor(e.g. nf, 500 V). The low frequency potential equalisation currents are thus suppressed, but the protective effect against high frequency interference signals remains. Select connection cable for Ex applications Take note of the corresponding installation regulations for Ex applications. In particular, make sure that no potential equalisation currents flow over the cable screen. This mode is provided for connection of measuring transducers without separate power supply (sensors in two-wire version). In passive mode the sensors are not powered, only the measured value is transmitted. This input is for connection of transmitters with own, separate voltage supply (sensors in four-wire version). Because they are accessed via different addresses in the HART multidrop mode, the two sensors must be connected to the same sensor input. These are either terminals / (active input) or terminals 3/4 (passive input). Mixed operation on active and passive input is not possible. Since this is a digital bus system, only one two-wire cable should lead to the two sensors. A distributor can then be connected directly forward of the sensors. Note: l On the active input (terminal /), VEGAMET provides the power for the connected sensosr. Power supply and measurement data are transmitted over the same two-wire cable. This mode is provided for connection of measuring transducers without separate power supply (sensors in two-wire version). l On the passive input (terminals 3/4), the sensors are not powered - only the measured value is transmitted. 10 Operation 5 Operation 5. Adjustment on The integrated indicating and adjustment unit is for measured value display, adjustment and diagnosis ofvegamet. Indication and adjustment is carried out in the front via a clear LC-display and a function switch as well as two keys. the use of PACTware with appropriate DTMs is recommended. The entered parameters are generally saved in VEGAMET, optionally also in PACTware on the PC COM on ESC OK 3 Ser. Adjustment on The integrated indicating and adjustment unit is used for measured value display, adjustment and diagnosis of VEGAMET as well as the connected sensors. The indication and adjustment is carried out via the clear, graphic-capable display with background lighting as well as four keys in the front. The adjustment menu with selectable language is clearly structured and enables easy setup. Certain adjustmentoptions are not available or only partially available with the integrated indicatingand adjustmentunit. These are, for example, webserver and functions (only with instruments with optional Ethernet interface). You will need the configuration software PACTware and a suitable instrument driver (DTM) according to the FDT standard. In addition, the VEGA DTMs can be integrated in other frame applications according to FDT standard. For connection, either the interface converter VEGA- CONNECT or the RS3/Ethernet interface with appropriate cable is required. All currently available VEGA DTMs are provided in a DTM Collection with the current PACTware version on CD. This CD is available from the respective VEGA agency for a token fee. The basic version of this DTM Collection incl. PACTware is also 0 Signal conditioning instruments

11 Operation available as a free-of-charge download from the Internet. The professional version also includes saving and printing of project documentation. A DTM licence for the respective instrument family can be purchased via the responsible VEGA agency. Connection of the PC via VEGACONNECT For temporary connection of the PC, e.g. for parameter adjustment, the connection can be made via the interface converter VEGACONNECT. The necessary I²C interface in the front of VEGAMET is available with all instrument versions. On the computer, connection is made via the RS3 interface. If this is not availableon your PC or already occupied, it is also possible to use a USB RS3 adapter (e.g. article no..6900). Connection of the modem via RS3 The RS3 interface is particularly suitable for easy modem connection. For this purpose, external analogue, ISDN and GSM modems with standard interface can be used. The necessary RS3 modem connection cable is included with the delivery of VEGAMET. Remote enquiry and processing of the measured values is now possible via the software Visual VEGA. As an alternative, also the independent, time or event-controlled transmission ofmeasured values via is possible. Use the RS3 modem connection cable included in the delivery and an additionally connectednull modem cable (e. g. article no. LOG ). If there is no RS3 interface available on the PC or if it is already occupied, you can also use a USB RS3 adapter (e.g. article no..6900). 5 Analogue, ISDN or GSM modem with RS3 interface RS3 modem connection cable (in the scope of delivery) 3 RS3 interface of VEGAMET 4 VEGAMET Connection of the PC via Ethernet With the Ethernet interface, VEGAMET can be connected directly to an existing PC network. Any standardpatch cable can be used. A cross-over cable must be used when connecting a VEGAMET directly to the PC. Each VEGAMET then gets its own IP address under which it can be accessed from anywhere in the network. The parameter adjustmentof the instrumentvia PACTware can be carried out from any PC. The measured values can be made available to individual users within the company network as HTML chart. As an alternative, also the independent, time or event-controlled transmission of measured values via is possible. These interfaces are integrated in the instrument and cannot be mounted afterwards. RS3 interface The RS3 interface is suitable for simple modem connection to PACTware or "Visual VEGA". External analogue, ISDN and GSM modems can be used for this purpose. Ethernet interface With the Ethernet interface, VEGAMET can be connected directly to an existing PC network. An own IP address is assigned to each VEGAMET, under which it can be reached from everywhere in the network. Web browser The integrated web server can make the measured values available to any individual user in the company network. The data is presented as an HTML chart in a standard browser (e.g. Internet Explorer). transmission When equipped with an Ethernet interface, the VEGAMET 64/ 65 signal conditioning instruments can send s via an existing, company-internal mail server. With the RS3 interface and modem, the transmission is made via dial-up connection network through an external and Internet Provider. The transmission can be event or time-controlled. The transmission of fault messages is also possible. Visual VEGA Visual VEGA is a software for automatic enquiry of measured values, indication and archiving. The enquiry of measured values can be made via RS3, Ethernet or modem. The presentation can be divided in groups and displayed as bar graph, as a chart or as line graph of the history data. If certain thresholds are reached, a message can be displayed or an /sms can be transmitted. Visual VEGA is network capable and can be installed on any number of PCs. Visual VEGA is particularly suitable if a large number of measured values, also from different locations, should be automatically retrieved and consolidated. Individual measured values, messages or faults can be sent automaticallyvia , fax or SMS. It is also possible to specify that only the measured values and messages required by the individual user are made available to him. Via the measured value archive, any historical level data can be recalled and used for tendency indication. 5.5 Application examples Stock management of a tank farm via network Requirement The stock of a tank farm should be measured and monitored continuously. The measured values should be made available to the scheduler and the sales department. A message should be also triggered automatically if a certain level is decreased. Via an indication (updated several times a day) and access to the levels of the previous days and weeks, the requirement/consumption of his customers should be estimated and the deliveries planned accordingly. This ensures foresighted purchasing and better utilization of the trucks. In addition, a message should be sent if the levels fall below certain predefined minimum values. By doing this, he can guarantee his customers a continuous supply of raw materials for production processes, without the customer having to take care of the purchase and ordering. This ensures better customer loyalty and continuous orders. Solution A VEGAMET with standard interface and modem(conventional telephone network or GSM) is installed at the customer's location. From the supplier's location, Visual VEGA contacts at regular, predefined intervals all VEGAMET in the field and retrieves the current measured values. The indication receives the current levels of each customer as well as the values of the past 30 days in a line graph. Via the network, any number of persons can have these values displayed at their work station with Visual VEGA (server/client principle). For each measurement loop, a certain measured value threshold is defined in Visual VEGA. If the value falls short of this threshold, Visual VEGA generates an appropriate message on the PC,and if desired, also sends an to certain persons. Interface measurement with VEGAMET 65 and VEGAFLEX 67 In an interface measurement, there are two different media which do not mix, e.g. water and oil or solvents. To detect the volume of both products, it is necessary to detect the height of the upper liquid (level) and the interface between the two products. A VEGAFLEX 67 is necessary as a transmitter which delivers the distance to the upper medium as well as the distance to the interface.
