4 DESCRIPTION D (17) INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background 1.2 Purpose 1.3 Participants The Advanced Remote Tower (ART) project will study the concept of remotely operated ATC units and supporting technologies in order to enhance regularity during low visibility operations and to substantially decrease the ATC related costs at airports. In the Advanced Remote Tower (ART) project the objectives are to: Remotely operate an airport ATC unit Combine remote operation with enhanced visibility and composite presentation of view and operational data Evaluate operational pros and cons of the remote airport concept. The project is divided into a number of work packages with different purposes and this document will only focus on work package 1.3 (cab adaptation design) and to some extent work package 2.3 (cab adaptation). This document describes the equipment and infrastructure necessary for turning the RTC room at Malmö ATCC into an Advanced Remote Tower cab, hereafter known as an ART cab. End point for the Cab Adaptation Plan has been set to the router in cabinet LB02, infrastructure and equipment beyond this point will not be described in this document. 6 DESCRIPTION D (17) CAB ADAPTATION PLAN FOR RTC ROOM 2.1 Room Overview The room chosen for the installation of the ART cab is located in a room in Malmö ATCC called the RTC room. The room has been built specially for the ART cab. The room has the dimensions of 997x931cm, the height from the floor to the central roof beam (marked in red dots) is 391cm. In the lower right of the picture there is an entrance to the room, the width of the entrance is 189cm and the height is 205cm Computer floor The floor in the RTC room is a computer floor with tiled pieces of the size of 60x60cm, the depth underneath the floor is 60cm. The mechanical construction holding up the floor provides individual adjustment for each tile. Under the floor, cable trays are mounted in all directions providing easy and professional means for installation of all types of cables. ART D1.3.1 Cab Adaptation Plan - D doc

7 DESCRIPTION D (17) Climate control Power outlets Lighting Climate control in the RTC room is provided by a ventilation system which pushes air through ventilation holes in the computer floor. Heated air from the projectors is removed by ventilation channels in the ceiling. The climate control is controlled by a central automatic system. Two power outlets are installed under the operator position with a total capacity of 4920W, connection of operator position equipment will be done using power distribution panels connected to the power outlets. All power outlets in the RTC room are connected via UPS. Lighting in the room is provided by seven fluorescent lamps in the ceiling. Additional lighting can be installed if needed. 2.2 Projection System º Circular screen Overview The 360º circular screen will be built centrally under the central beam in the ceiling. 8 DESCRIPTION D (17) Mounting of screen The 360º screen is delivered in nine sections and will be mounted together in the RTC room. The inside of the screen will be painted and no seams will be seen. The legs of the screen will be bolted to the computer floor for maximum stability Entrance into screen Projectors One of the sections will have an opening making it possible to get in and out of the screen. The opening can be opened and closed with a moveable section on wheels. Nine projectors will be installed in a ring that will be mounted to the central beam in the ceiling. The triangular gantry will be mounted to the central beam in the ceiling which has been equipped with special brackets. The projectors will use three cables each, one for power, one for DVI and one for network giving a total of 27 cables. All cables will be installed between projectors and the LB01 cabinet and will be fastened to cable trays, mounted to the beam in the ceiling Power supply for projectors Supply of power to the projectors will be taken from the LB01 cabinet using nine separate power cables, one for each projector. 9 DESCRIPTION D (17) DVI cables for projectors From each projector a DVI cable will be connected to one DVI output of a PROMAP server in cabinet LB01, DVI cables will be installed on the opposite side of power cables in the cable tray Network connection for projectors From each projector a network cable will be connected to the 16-port hub in the LB01 cabinet. This will provide functionality for configuring projectors via network commands Promap Servers To have a correct picture from the camera pc s on the 360º circular screen, a correction of the picture is needed, three Promap servers are installed in cabinet LB01 to accomplish this. 10 DESCRIPTION D (17) Cabinets LB01 (Cabinet installed with Equipe Electronics equipment) The cabinet will be equipped with three PROMAP servers installed in the topmost position. Below the PROMAP servers a 16-port hub will be installed, by using the topmost position the cable length to the projectors can be kept to a minimum. Installed power outlets in the cabinet are divided between three different power distribution panels, each with a maximum power outage of 2460W. Picture below displays the cabinet layout of LB01. 11 DESCRIPTION D (17) LB02 (Cabinet installed with SAAB and equipment) The cabinet will be equipped with four camera pc s with two video outputs each (Pc #1 Pc #4) and two camera pc s with one video output each (Pc #5- Pc #6). At the top of the cabinet a Cisco 7200 router and Cisco 2960g switch is installed together with two patch panels, one fibre optic patch panel and one Ethernet patch panel. 12 DESCRIPTION D (17) LB03 (Cabinet reserved for future equipment) No equipment has been planned for this cabinet at the moment. 13 DESCRIPTION D (17) Operator position Overview The operator position will be equipped with the following hardware: Five flat screen monitors on the outer edge of the table, the monitors are 20 in size except for the one in the middle used for radar which is 22. The outer edge of the table is approximately 10cm lower than the rest of the table giving a better viewing clearance for the operator to the circular screen. Four miniature pc s, one for FDP & E-strip, one for AWOS, RCMS & RDP, one for the pan-tilt-zoom camera and one for use as a administrative pc. Wacom Cintiq 21 ux interactive pen display. A Voice Communication System from Frequentis including a touch entry device, two loudspeakers (LSP) and a volume control module (VCM). A trackball for the pan-tilt-zoom camera (PTZ). Two wireless keyboards and mice for controlling the functions on the five screens Interactive Pen Display The interactive pen display in the centre of the operator position will be used for different tasks. The upper half will be used for electronic strips and the lower half will be used for manoeuvring certain functions on the pc s in the operator position. ART D1.3.1 Cab Adaptation Plan - D doc

14 DESCRIPTION D (17) VCS TED LSP VCM FDP The voice communication system will be used for air-ground and ground-ground communications, the system can be divided into two parts, central equipment and position equipment. The central equipment is installed outside the RTC room and communicates with the position equipment through duplicated lines. The touch entry device for the Voice Communication System will be installed to the left of the interactive pen display, it is installed in an adjustable housing which makes it possible for the operator to choose a working position that s optimal. Two loudspeakers will be installed in the operator position, one for channels in traffic mode and one for channels in monitoring mode. The loudspeaker for traffic mode will be installed to the left of the interactive pen display and the loudspeaker for monitoring mode will be installed to the right of the interactive pen display. The loudspeakers have a knob which makes it possible to adjust the volume. The VCM provides functionality to change the volume individually for two different handset/headsets, it will be installed to the left of the interactive pen display. The screen for FDP will be installed in the leftmost position of the operator position. The miniature pc running the software for FDP will be mounted right underneath the screen assigned for FDP AWOS / RCMS RDP The screen for AWOS and RCMS will be installed between the FDP screen and the radar screen. The miniature pc running the software for AWOS and RCMS is the same as for RDP, therefore it is mounted underneath the radar screen. The radar screen will be installed in the centre of the operator position, the screen is 2 inches larger than the other screens, providing a larger viewing area for radar tracks. 15 DESCRIPTION D (17) Pan-tilt-zoom camera (PTZ) Trackball The screen for the pan-tilt-zoom camera will be installed to the right of the radar screen in the middle. The miniature pc running the software for PTZ will be mounted right underneath the screen assigned for PTZ. The PTZ camera is manoeuvred with the trackball. The trackball is placed to the right of the interactive pen display, however this device is moveable if the position isn t suitable for everyone Wireless keyboard and mouse Used for functions that can t be controlled with the interactive pen display or if mouse and keyboard is preferred as controlling devices, instead of interactive pen display Administrative PC The administrative pc will be used for common work such as , word processing and other office work that needs to be done.
