6 APPLICATIONS IN HARSH ENVIRONMENTS (HE) FIBER-OPTIC SOLUTIONS FOR TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT INSTALLATIONS IN HE Connectors used in harsh environments have to be resistant to special conditions, such as increased temperatures, impacts, vibration, tensile strain, pressure and corrosive environments. The demand for fiber-optic products that are able to withstand these extreme conditions is increasing in significance. These products can be temporarily used, for example, for communication as well as video and machine surveillance during the construction of a tunnel. Resistant plug connections, which are laid freely or permanently installed and are not protected by industrial housings, are indispensible in harsh environments. 8 TECHNOLOGY DIAMOND 0.1 db-class Transmission losses are a significant factor in data networks, in which an increasing volume of data is transferred and which cover longer distances. With a connector loss of 0.1 db, the user has the best requirements for operating such trend-setting networks. The IEC series of standards for fiber-optic connector optical interfaces describes the performance and attenuation classes for connectors with SM fibers. This series of standards defines the conditions that must be observed in order to satisfy specific requirements for insertion- and return loss. The fiber eccentricity and the exit angle are related to the loss, which is an important parameter. Plug connections can be classified based on these values. The following applies for a Diamond 0.1-dB-class connector: Fiber eccentricity um; exit angle 0.4. These values ensure that the 0.1-dB limit is also guaranteed in the event of accidental connections. A permanent 0.1-dB class is ensured through a 100% production control system. 9 MEASUREMENTS AND TESTS FO 9 QUALITY, RELIABILITY AND DURABILITY All connector types in Diamond s range of products are tested according to standardized procedures, that include OPTICAL, MECHANICAL AND CLIMATIC tests, defining the performance and reliability of the product. Performance tests in accordance with the IEC standard These tests reveal how good a product is. The tests distinguish between various application categories, i.e. for connectors, it is mainly category C (for controlled environments, e.g in an office) and category U (for uncontrolled environments, e.g. street distribution boxes). Reliability tests in accordance with the IEC standard These tests simulate a product's aging process. The optical and mechanical characteristics after aging must be guaranteed this determines the reliability of a product. ENSURING INCREASED NETWORK STABILITY AND PRODUCTIVITY Network stability and high levels of network productivity are the preconditions necessary for achieving economic success in the operation of all networks. The aim in so doing is to guarantee a high level of resilience against network outages, and if outages do occur, to ensure a quick detection and rapid troubleshooting. In its position as a global market leader in fiber-optic connection technologies, DIAMOND has developed a new network monitoring system which is based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology. THE NETWORK MONITORING SYSTEM 1. The OLiD reflectors are integrated into the fiber-optic line, to which a unique code is assigned. 2. A simple instrument (the interrogator) is used to read the code, identify the line and correct any possible in stallation errors. 3. The code is assigned to a line and the network information is entered into a database for future network management. TECHNOLOGIES INVOLVED A Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is a Bragg reflector, which is written onto the fiber core at regular intervals. These reflect specific light wavelengths and relay all others. The OLiD code works with different wavelengths to those used for data transmission. This means that there is no interference with user data in either direction.
