Arduino & mbed Workshop + Hackathon
Rob Faludi! Arduino Basics
Pedro Perez! Intro to mbed
Goals Explore two paths to fast programmability with our radio modules in mind Learn their strengths and weaknesses first-hand Discover great tools for fast-prototyping new ideas Win prizes!
The Task! make a two-node device network, one node with Arduino and the second node with mbed
Suggested networks: doorbell with feedback (front and back door) Jeopardy buzzers - you can t ring in until allowed and your opponent is locked out when you ve buzzed rock paper scissors game networked dice game secret knock lock with code updated remotely! simple weather station for 2 locations (temperature, humidity, wind, barometer) security system warns when door or window is open too long two clocks that set themselves botanicalls! Your plant tweets when it is thirsty traffic lights, locally controlled with remote override street lights, locally controlled by sensors with remote schedule changes plus full override or your Fabulous Idea
Plan Intro to Arduino - 30 minutes Intro to mbed - 30 minutes Demo of Arduino Stacker - 10 minutes (Jonathan Young) Teaming - ~50 minutes, we suggest groups of two or three Hackathon session + Pizza Party: Wednesday night Presentations and Prizes: Thursday afternoon Parts Orders: Monday night is ideal (Final deadlines: Tuesday Adafruit before 9:30 am Central time. Sparkfun before 11:30 am Central time. Digi-key before 7:30 pm Central time.)
Prizes Prizes for three best projects Prize for all groups that complete both nodes

Serial Communications
One Question Quiz!! what is this: 10
Programming with Serial Serial.begin(speed) Serial.available() Serial.read() Serial.flush() Serial.write() Serial.print(data) also SoftwareSerial library lets you use any pins
XBees!
Arduino Shield
Arduino Shield

Your XBees ZigBee radios One Coordinator on every network C One or two routers R PAN IDs must match > C3, R3, R3
Remember! Use only +3.3 Volts. More than +7 Volts will kill your radio If you use a voltage regulator, always use decoupling capacitors. The radios often don t work without them. XBee TX goes to Arduino RX and vice versa. Unplug the TX & RX before uploading Arduino code (or use switches) Leonardo users Serial1 for hardware UART You can t send infinitely fast. Try putting a 10 ms delay into your loop.
Information Overload
Doorbells
Basic Doorbell
Feedback Doorbell
Nap Doorbell
XBee Arduino Stacker An XBee radio-sized Arduino-compatible microcontroller that can be stacked directly underneath the radio.! It is intended for use with devices that already use the XBee s 20-pin footprint.
XBee Arduino Stacker
Features I2C SPI 17 total digital i/o pins (14 Arduino, 4 XBee) 6 configurable as ADC analog inputs 4 configurable as PWM analog outputs 2 attachable interrupts USB serial programming wireless programming scriptable interruption of: all UART transactions XBee pin sleep controls local support for: association indicator commissioning button EEPROM multiple UARTs Use of all Arduino libraries, e.g. servo, stepper, displays, capacitive sensing, rfid, sd cards etc.
