5 Equipment Summary escan The escan is a precinct-based digital scanner that ensures secure, accurate and reliable paper-based voting. Providing second-chance voting, dual-sided scanning, and fast flexible reporting, the escan is the choice of voters around the country. Judge s Booth Controller (JBC) The JBC is the polling place control console that ensures correct ballot information is transmitted to each of the eslates. It also serves as an electronic ballot box, with printing and reporting capabilities. eslate and DAU eslate The eslate voting machine allows voters to cast electronic ballots by turning a rotary SELECT wheel. Specially modified Disabled Access Unit (DAU) eslates allow voters with disabilities to use headphones or other adaptive devices to vote privately and independently. Verifiable Ballot Option (VBO) The VBO works with the eslate to automatically create a paper audit trail as a voter completes an electronic ballot. It uses paper ballots produced by the Hart Voting System Ballot Now software and stores votes on an election-specific flash memory card. 8 Judge s Booth Controller (JBC) The JBC is the polling place control console that manages as many as 12 eslate voting units. Using election data on a PC memory card called a Mobile Ballot Box (MBB), the JBC controls the ballot styles displayed on the eslate, ensuring that every voter receives the correct ballot. Results can also be printed from the device.
